Ever hear of a cross-century war? This book has one going on. The charming time-travel story continues in this second part. The first was incredibly romantic and left off with a cliffhanger; however, this second book in the series could be read alone.

Things start off with a mystery. Michele is a sixteen-year-old girl from the present who fell in love with a boy from the past; a century past. She met him before her grandparents were born. Then she loses him, being forced back into her present.

One day, to her shock, the new kid shows up at her school. It’s him! He found a way to cross time and be with her. The problem is, he doesn’t seem to know her, and he is hanging out with another girl. Her heart crashes. What’s going on here? Her character is well written as she pursues her answers. What a strong, brave girl.

Mixed in with thismystery is the romantic tale of how Michele’s parents meet and fall in love. It’s a lovely story on its own, but with a tragic ending. Also, Michele is told that children of cross-timed parents are strictly forbidden to exist—her. A woman from the past wants to kill her and does horrible things to get at her. Time is running out for Michele. Will Philip remember her and help her?

There are tender moments, not only for Michele and Philip, but for Michele’s parents. She gets to watch them, see their young love. Another great moment is when Michele goesback in time and meets the father she never knew. She gets answers. Her dad’s background is quite interesting.

This book is filled with suspense. Though it seems to focus more on Michele’s parents than on her and Philip, it’s still a great read from a talented author.

I really like to read straight contemporary YA novels in which the author is dealing with the serious issues (e.g. dysfunctional families, bullying, being different, etc.). I also like the books that have strong and intelligent heroine. Becoming the Butlers had all of the above mentioned. The main character is fourteen-year-old Rachel Harris with whom I empathize through the story. Her parents were always a little bit eccentric and not very happy with their lives. Because of the wrong decisions they made in the past Rachel suddenly found herself in the situation where she was the one who was acting mature, while her parents continued to act like selfish and spoiled little kids. I really liked her proactive approach in trying to resolve the problems and the conclusions that she reached in the end.

Unfortunately Becoming the Butlers, also has a few problems. The author raised a lot of issues, but some of them were not resolved while, on the other hand those resolved ones were resolved too easily. In both cases what was missing is the process, which left the story with a few loose ends and made the happy end a bit unrealistic.

Regardless of these shortcomings, the author succeeded to follow the main idea of the book. The characters grew and changed, and in the end they became better versions of themselves. Although the issues raised here were difficult ones (alcoholism, dysfunctional family, child negligence) this is not a dark book and the story flows nicely. All in all, Becoming the Butlers was a satisfying read that I would recommend to all of you who like straight contemporary YA books.

Final Note: the first edition of this book was published in 1990, this is not a revised version, and because of that contain some scenes that some readers may find unbelievable, like for example, smoking on the plane.

Ms. Andersen put together a very interesting mystery. The code in the book was intriguing, and I liked the fact that Joe and Mr. Grant spent months trying to crack the code rather than somehow figuring it out instantly. Mr. Grant and Joe are smart, but they aren’t experts by any stretch of the word, so their slow but determined process was very believable. Once Joe and his friends arrive at Dog Head Island, the atmosphere definitely becomes creepy. The island is uninhabited, overgrown, and teaming with snakes. The remoteness of the island coupled with the strange things Joe sees and hears really add to the suspense of the story.

Joe is an easy character to like. He’s a very mature and caring young man. He’s thrilled at the prospect of cracking the code in the old book, but even more excited about the prospect of finding treasure. What is most touching about Joe’s desire to find a fortune is his concern for his mother. Joe and his mother have been on their own since his father died, and while they are doing okay, Joe wishes he could do more to help. Joe’s protective streak also comes out when he’s around Annie, a beautiful but lonely girl who is somewhat of an outcast at school. Joe’s friendship with Annie is sweet and definitely has the potential to develop into something romantic. Given their young age, I think their relationship moves at just the right speed. I can definitely see them as a couple when they are a little older.

While Joe demonstrates maturity beyond his fourteen years, he also has moments that prove he’s still a young teenager. In his determination to discover the secrets on Dog Head Island, Joe throws caution to the wind and gets himself into a couple of scrapes that nearly cost him his life. I eagerly flipped through the pages wondering how someone so young could possibly get out of such a precarious situation. However, Joe proved to be a very brave young man with all the makings of a hero.

I do wish Joe would have spent more time on Dog Head Island. It takes months for Joe, his mother, Mr. Grant, and Annie to get to the island. Once there, everything happens so quickly that it seemed like the tale was over just as I was sinking my teeth into the meat of the mystery. I think there’s so much more to explore concerning the code in the book and the secrets of Dog Head Island. I really wasn’t ready for the story to end.

The descriptions of the era, as well as those of the twenties and forties enrich the story and make the world of the characters realistic. Michele’s adventures in the past are interesting. The subplot adds intrigue with its family mystery. Supporting characters are just right.

This is a fast-paced book, hard to put down, and so well written. It’s moving emotionally and lovely in presentation. The author is a singer/songwriter, and the original songs mentioned in the book can be found online. I look forward to reading the sequel to this great story and highly recommend this book.

I was drawn (pun intended) into this book from the first page and couldn’t put it down. I love Michelle. She’s both a typical teen and uniquely herself—talented and liked, but not popular. She’s pretty without being gorgeous. In a word, she’s real. Her worries about making friends and fitting in felt honest without being too angsty. She deals with the strange things that happen to her in a believable way.

When Michelle is drawn into the past it naturally makes her question her sanity. I liked how her mother’s wackiness and her brother’s disease add depth to her worries and to her father’s, making what someone else might pass off as vivid dreams into something truly disconcerting. The setting is wonderful and highlights the changes from past to present and back in an organic way that make the transitions seem effortless. This story is so deftly created that I was in each setting and could easily “see” Michelle’s art without illustrations.

I enjoyed how Ms. Lamba seamlessly inserts “Back to the Future” references. They compliment Roger’s character, fit the plot, and help explain how changing the past can change the present. They clarify things for Michelle and force her think about what she’s doing and realize by simply being in the past she changes the present. In the midst of her growing affection for Christopher, she has to weigh the risks and possible consequences of her actions to decide what action, if any, to take.

I loved how the book ended. It wasn’t what I thought it would be and different than Michelle thought it would as well, but it felt right and was very satisfying. I recommend Drawn to tweens, teens and above. It has the perfect amount of romance, and enough action and suspense to keep the most distracted reader turning the pages.

It was interesting to see how Katniss, along with Peeta, tried to solve a problem they didn’t even know they created. This seems like such a burden for a children to bear, yet they faced each stage head on. In this story, I really got to see Katniss step up and not only protect her sister but everyone else who she cares for no matter the consequences to herself.

Peeta proved to me why he was my favorite character in the first story by being even better this time around. Katniss is really the one facing having to suffer the consequences of her and Peeta’s actions. Yet Peeta still stands by her side even if their relationship is questionable at best.

This story was another gut wrenching plot that left me in tears at times. The new characters introduced in this story far surpassed the supporting cast in The Hunger Games. Although, some of the previous favorites like Gale, Seneca, and Primrose make an appearance as well. New characters are introduced that make this story just plan enjoyable. The twists and turns the author came up with to challenge these characters was inspirational.

You must read the first installment of this trilogy to truly appreciate this story. Trust me, you will want to read the first story as well as the second and the third. I originally read the series then I allowed my ten year old to read them. She asked me numerous times if she could re-read the series. She even finished reading Catching Fire in two days, that is how captivating it was. Do not mistake this as just a young adult novel either, anyone of any age can appreciate this book. So please pick it up today.

Katniss and Peeta’s story is amazing. The story was so well written, I was literally in tears to the point where I thought I couldn’t continue any further, yet I still refused to put the book down. On the flip side, there were moments I was grinning like a Cheshire cat. Therefore, if you don’t want people to think you’re losing your mind you may want to find a nice quiet room to read in because you may not be able to control your emotions when reading this story.

Though both main characters were inspiring to me, Peeta was really the standout character within the story. As the son of a baker, he comes off as one of the most unlikely players to make it through the first few minutes of the hunger games. He may not be the strongest or best with weapons, but he has an inner strength and resolution that really makes you rally behind him.

As if creating exciting main characters wasn’t enough, the supporting cast Ms. Collins brings in are just as remarkable. For example, Rue and Cinna are two characters I felt could have had their own stories. They had a star quality. I was eagerly anticipating the next scene to include them. These are only two of the wonderful characters that grace the pages and I am sure you will fall in love with each and every one of them.

I have recommended this book to numerous people including my daughter. She was captivated to the point that she brought the book to read during lunch and recess in school. While this book may not be appropriate for children under twelve due to its dark themes, it is certainly worth an adult’s time to read and then decide whether to share with their child.

Her teen characters were perfectly drawn, and believeable. I do have to admit that Brad was a little too perfect, but what a dreamy guy to have as a hero.

Traci is already having a rough time–Her mom and dad have divorced and her mother embarrasses her on a regular basis. Her best friend is a little on the silly side, her previous best friend drowned just a couple years before and she has a crush on the quarterback.

But when weird messages start showing up on her computer that can only be from her long-dead friend, Corky, it really sends her into a tailspin. Worse, there are dozens of messages and they all say the same thing: Can you come over today?

I had such fun reading about Corky’s pranks and ‘big brother’ protection of Traci, of Traci helping Corky with the problems he was facing, and of Traci trying to establish a relationship with Brad while Corky watched (and sometimes did more than watch!).

I did feel like the reason Corky’s dad had left the family was a little over the top for such a light, fluffy book, but it didn’t ruin my enjoyment one bit.

Sherrie Kelley has a great voice for YA, and I hope she decides to write more. I’ll be on the lookout.
