This intimate account of 24 legendary groupies reveals what went on behind the closed doors of rock stars from Elvis to Marilyn Manson. Consisting of Pamela Des Barres’s revealing interviews with and profiles of other supergroupies, this book offers firsthand glimpses into the backstage world of rock stars and the women who loved them. The groupies—such as Tura Satana, Miss Japan Beautiful, who taught Elvis how to dance; Cassandra Peterson (Mistress of the Dark), who tangled with Tom Jones in Sin City; Cynthia Plaster Caster, who redefined the art of Jimi Hendrix; and Miss B., who revealed Kurt Cobain’s penchant for lip gloss and panty hose—tell tales that go well beyond an account of a one-night stand to become a part of music history.

There are those who attend to see the band and those who want to see the music. These girls and a guy want to feel it.

This is the collection of stories of people who didn’t just follow the band because they liked the music or they wanted to bed a star. These are the ones who wanted to help make the band who they ended up being.

I can see where this might be seen as a smoothed-over way to describe these people. They’re groupies, so they must want to do everything with the star. I’m sure they do, but each story proves there is more to the story than just getting down with it. There are people who genuinely love the music and want the band to be their best. They want the band at ease.

And there might have been plaster involved.

It’s still a fun read and good for an afternoon when it’s chilly outside. Give this one a shot. I recommend it.

Mary Ann Wilson, who lived a life which was proper and palatable; had dormant longings of salaciousness resurrected in the presence of a stranger. His name was Brink. And, this man lived up to his name in taking this tepid housewife willingly into that void of the unknown.

On this cul-de-sac of Chamberlain Court, borrowing a cup of sugar was just the beginning of getting to know your neighbors better.

With her two children moving on to live their own lives out of home, Mary Ann’s days are no longer filled with being a mother and she’s starting to feel bored. While Mary Ann loves her husband, he is even more busy with work – home less than ever before – so when new neighbors move into their small street Mary Ann is extremely curious. Brink is a Dom and unashamed of his sexual needs and desires. Will Mary Ann regret her eagerness to welcome their new neighbor onto their street?

I found this to be an interesting short story. The writing style is different to most stories I am used to – quite sparse and succinct. While I often enjoy this style for gritty or noir mystery stories – the lack of description and short, punchy style of writing really lends a tense, terse sort of atmosphere perfect for harder types of mystery or detective stories – I’m not sure this writing style is really suited for romance stories, even erotic ones. With so little detail and a snappy, very bare sort of “voice” it was quite difficult for me to get a good feel for Mary Ann and her personality. While as the reader I certainly knew the basics – she was a mother really feeling her empty nest and searching for a new path in her life – I didn’t get a good understanding of her character until quite a long way into the short story.

Readers looking for a slightly grittier and short story written very leanly should find this writing style suits their tastes. I also feel those looking for a more romantic or softer style of story might not find what they need here. Mary Ann is mostly happily married and indeed remains with her husband – her deal with Brink is quite clear and only to train her in the lifestyle of a part-time submissive. This isn’t an affair of the heart, and in many ways their relationship isn’t considered cheating to either Mary Ann or Brink. While they are physically and sexually intimate Mary Ann and Brink have a clear contract outlining their sessions and what is and isn’t acceptable and what they each wish to achieve with the other.

There are also a few scenes between Brink and his main submissive, Mimi. I feel only readers who enjoy harder edged – more erotic rather than romantic – stories will enjoy the scenes of Mimi pushing her relationship boundaries with Brink and the resulting punishment. I found the harder edge of these scenes coupled with the lean writing style really made this story more a piece of short erotica and not really romantic or sensual. It was hard for me to feel the emotional ties and feelings connecting the main characters to each other and so I feel this story won’t be to everyone’s tastes.

Those looking for something edgier or different from the usual short story should certainly give this a try. While I don’t feel it will be suitable for all readers it was a good, fresh and different read.

“I’m not entering this year.” I pinned an unbreakable stare on Bethany, my co-worker and long-time friend, who lived in the same apartment complex as me. We arrived early for work and piddled over coffee in her cubical like we always did before diving into the nuts and bolts of company business. Standing firm, I crossed my arms. “Period.”

Bethany rolled her eyes in the “I’m so not believing this” fashion and tweaked the Santa garland decorating her cube’s walls. “Why not, Samantha? You should be proud to be the five-time winner of The Great Fruitcake Bake-off. You’re a-a”–her words trailed off as she searched the ceiling for the ultimate in descriptive–“legend.”

I twitched my black skirt in place, and then I tucked my shoulder-length hair behind my ear. I let loose a long exhale. “Is being a legend in the fruitcake world a good thing?”

Any weird things you do when you’re alone?

I like to eyeball my surroundings and check to see if everything is plumb and level. Is the sign post straight, are the pictures hanging evenly on the wall, the wheels on the car in front of me aligned? Being an architect and a carpenter, the least crookedness sends me off kilter. When Veronica (my wife and coauthor) catches me cocking my head and staring at something with one eye closed, she’d laugh and say, “There he goes again.”

What is your favorite quote and why?

“God is in the details.”—A quote from the German American architect, Mies van der Rohe

I learned the importance of details in my father’s basement workshop. When I was twelve, I carved the front of a bookshelf with a Viking motif. This design is now used as a decorative border on the front and back covers of my book. I believe the final detail I’d added to this carving made all the difference. Instead of leaving the background as it was, I made a tool with many points to roughen the smooth surface of the wood. This texture gave the pattern a new dimension and made it appear to rise up. Since then I’ve applied this principle of “God is in the details” to all my undertakings, from designing buildings to writing my memoir. The difference between a mediocre product and an outstanding one is in the details.

Who is your favorite author and why?

Halldór Laxness, the Icelandic Nobel Laureate for literature. His writing is concise, sharp witted, sometimes outright funny, and his characters are so vivid they remind me of people I know. Much of it is a searing social critique of current or historical norms in Iceland. His books have been translated into many languages, but nothing beats reading it in Icelandic. If a book can sing, his does, which by the way is the title of one of his novels, The Fish Can Sing.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

The first and foremost element is the theme, and memoir writing is no different. In my memoir, the theme is the backbone that prevents the narrative from collapsing into a mishmash of anecdotes. Unless you’re famous and readers will devour anything you tell about yourself, a memoir needs to focus on a certain aspect of your life, usually one with a compelling revelation worth sharing.

Vividness is another important element. Readers like to be transported to another world, and the only way to do this is to bring out details that enable the reader to see, hear, and smell the scene. This applies to characters as well. When I start talking to a character I’m reading about in a book, this means the author has succeeded.

Where did you get the idea for this book?

My writing started as an incoherent collection of episodes from various stages of my life. I thought it would be a nice document for my descendants. Then Veronica, a former journalist and published author, became fascinated with my stories. She connected the dots and saw the picture that explained who I was. (My quirks had puzzled her for many years.) She could see how my country’s history and Viking heritage had shaped me. So we embarked on a more coherent effort to capture my journey: growing up in Iceland, which cultivated an outward-looking Viking mindset and inspired my subsequent worldwide travels. My memoir became a story about the making of a modern-day Viking and his adventures.

This vivacious personal story captures the heart and soul of modern Iceland. Born in Reykjavik on the eve of the Second World War, Sverrir Sigurdsson watched Allied troops invade his country and turn it into a bulwark against Hitler’s advance toward North America. The country’s post-war transformation from an obscure, dirt-poor nation to a prosperous one became every Icelander’s success. Spurred by this favorable wind, Sverrir answered the call of his Viking forefathers, setting off on a voyage that took him around the world.

My maternal grandfather, Þorkell Magnússon, was the captain of a fishing vessel called Gyða. In early April 1910, he and his seven-man crew, including his eldest son, set sail from Bíldudalur, a small town in northwest Iceland. Their destination was the rich fishing grounds beyond the fjord. April was the beginning of the fishing season, which lasted until September. These were the “mild” months. In reality, the weather was often stormy and below freezing, pushing both the boat and men to the limit of their endurance. Three weeks later, on April 23, Gyða headed for home, her hull laden with cod, the valuable cash fish many fishermen had died for. Nearing their home fjord, the men’s hearts must have lifted. A hot meal, a warm bed, and the family’s embrace were within a day’s reach.

That night, a furious northerly gale pounded the region with snow and sleet, whipping the sea into a deadly cauldron of crashing waves. All hands would have scrambled on deck to wrestle with the wind, jibing and tacking to keep the gusts from capsizing the boat. The battle went on all night. The next morning, Gyða was still upright and staggering closer to home. Einar, my grandfather’s neighbor and a former crew member, attested to seeing her from shore during a visit to his family’s farm on the outer reaches of Arnarfjörður (Eagle Fjord). The wind was still howling, pummeling the boat from left and right. But Einar was confident the boat could hold herself together. After all, Gyða was a sturdy oceangoing vessel, one of the first to be built in Iceland with state-of-the art technology. In just a few more hours, she would reach the safety of the harbor.

Musician, actor, activist, and the iconic face of New York City cool, Debbie Harry is the frontwoman of Blondie, a band that forged a new sound that brought together the worlds of rock, punk, disco, reggae and hip-hop to create some of the most beloved pop songs of all time. As a muse, she collaborated with some of the boldest artists of the past four decades. The scope of Debbie Harry’s impact on our culture has been matched only by her reticence to reveal her rich inner life—until now.

In an arresting mix of visceral, soulful storytelling and stunning visuals, Face It upends the standard music memoir while delivering a truly prismatic portrait. With all the grit, grime, and glory recounted in intimate detail, Face It re-creates the downtown scene of 1970s New York City, where Blondie played alongside the Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Iggy Pop and David Bowie. Aesthetically dazzling, and including never-before-seen photographs, bespoke illustrations and fan art installations, Face It brings Debbie Harry’s world and artistic sensibilities to life.
Following her path from glorious commercial success to heroin addiction, the near-death of partner Chris Stein, a heart-wrenching bankruptcy, and Blondie’s breakup as a band to her multifaceted acting career in more than thirty films, a stunning solo career and the triumphant return of her band, and her tireless advocacy for the environment and LGBTQ rights, Face It is a cinematic story of a woman who made her own path, and set the standard for a generation of artists who followed in her footsteps—a memoir as dynamic as its subject.

Debbie Harry is blunt and this book showcases her at her best.

I have to admit I picked up this book because of the art in the middle. Yes, art. Debbie Harry showcases fan art in this book and it’s very cool to see how the fans interpreted her. Some are kid drawings and others are by adults. She’s a multifaceted person and this book shows it.
Once I poured through the art, I got down to reading. Debbie Harry is seen as one of the queens of punk and this book showcases that. She’s blunt and honest in her retellings of her life. This woman has been through a lot. She was adopted as a baby and always wondered about her parents. The story wasn’t pretty and rather depressing. At least she had a decent childhood. But still, she’s a rebel and seems like she always was. I liked how she managed to get herself through school, college and navigate the punk scene while being an independent and true to herself. She proves that you can do what you want and get what you want if you’re willing to do the work.

She talks about her relationships and her current state of affairs in plain and blunt terms that makes one feel like she’s talking to me. Like a conversation between friends. I liked it.

“That was fun,” said Fee, smiling up at him when he walked her to the door of her house. She looked down at the zippered tote that blocked the door. “What’s this?”

Hopefully it was what Jed had arranged with Joanna to have dropped off. If not, Fee had an empty an empty animal carrier. A strident pair of meows instantly assured him Joanna had done her part. The pair of kittens had been born of a Ragdoll mother and a father “from a nice neighborhood,” as the breeder had said with a rueful shrug. Their lineage had made them both beautiful and affordable. The fact that they were the last two siblings in the litter explained Ailey’s reluctance to separate them.

“Everything you’ll need for them is in the house,” he said, taking her keys from her and unlocking the door, since she showed no sign of doing it on her own. She held a kitten in each hand. “Joanna took care of all of that this evening while we were gone. Ailey and I picked them up yesterday while you were working. They spent the night with me last night. They’re really good roommates.”

Inside, Jed poured them each a glass of wine while Fee got acquainted with Mistletoe and Holly, the names she gave the fuzzy kittens immediately. When they’d fallen asleep on the cushioned bed on the hearth of the pretty but completely nonfunctioning fireplace in the living room, Fee sat across the table from Jed. She mopped at the tears that insisted on rolling down her cheeks.

“I never wanted Ailey to feel responsible for me, but she was worried about me being alone through the holidays. I hate that.”

“No, you don’t, and you’ve got black gunk on your face. It means you raised a good kid. What more would you want from her than that she be a compassionate human being?” Like her mother.

“Oh, good grief.” She went down the hallway to the bathroom, coming back a few minutes later with a scrubbed-clean face. “That’s what I get for trying to look good for a date.” She blushed as soon as she’d said the words, and looked around as if she was searching for something to unsay them with.

Jed got up, going over to where she stood and taking her into his arms. For a moment, he just held her, giving all of her curves time to adjust to his planes and angles. Then he kissed her, taking his time about it, thinking…no, not thinking at all. Just feeling. It had been so long since he’d held a woman he lo…he cared about. Too long, Heather would say, but she’d know, too, what he’d been waiting for.

“You were my best and last love,” she’d told him once during her illness, holding his hand in her thin one and laying her fingers up against his. “I’m not going to be yours. I’m good with that.”

It should have felt wrong to let go of one love while holding another, but it didn’t. For the first time since Heather’s death, Jed gave credence to the thought that he might someday be happy again. Not yet, but someday.

“The tree-lighting at the Common is tomorrow night,” he said. “Want to go with me?”

She nodded. “Most of the stores are opening back up afterward. A couple of the Klatchers are going to open Silver Threads after the lighting and man the cutting table. Ailey and I had planned to go.” She smiled, but there was an extra shine in her eyes.

“Maybe you should kiss me again.”

“Maybe I should.”

Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson

Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson
Publisher: Crown Business
Genre: Contemporary, Non-Fiction
Rating: 4.5 stars

Brilliant and engagingly written, Why Nations Fail answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries: Why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine?

Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of what the right policies are?

Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Otherwise, how to explain why Botswana has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world, while other African nations, such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, and Sierra Leone, are mired in poverty and violence?

Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Korea, to take just one of their fascinating examples, is a remarkably homogeneous nation, yet the people of North Korea are among the poorest on earth while their brothers and sisters in South Korea are among the richest. The south forged a society that created incentives, rewarded innovation, and allowed everyone to participate in economic opportunities.

The economic success thus spurred was sustained because the government became accountable and responsive to citizens and the great mass of people. Sadly, the people of the north have endured decades of famine, political repression, and very different economic institutions—with no end in sight. The differences between the Koreas is due to the politics that created these completely different institutional trajectories.

– China has built an authoritarian growth machine. Will it continue to grow at such high speed and overwhelm the West?

– Are America’s best days behind it? Are we moving from a virtuous circle in which efforts by elites to aggrandize power are resisted to a vicious one that enriches and empowers a small minority?

– What is the most effective way to help move billions of people from the rut of poverty to prosperity? More philanthropy from the wealthy nations of the West? Or learning the hard-won lessons of Acemoglu and Robinson’s breakthrough ideas on the interplay between inclusive political and economic institutions?

Why Nations Fail will change the way you look at—and understand—the world.

Written by an economist and a political scientist, this book attempts to answer an intriguing question about why some countries enjoy prosperity and other sink into desperation. Economics, politics, and history are the lenses readers will look through to partake of these important insights.

Which factors come into play? The authors compare countries in the present and the past side-by-side, discussing political and economic decisions that shape citizens’ lives. They go over the possibilities of climate, geography, culture, religion, etc. testing differences against prosperity or ruin and convincingly show that factors like these are not the reasons nations sink or swim.

Though many nations are discussed, a particular good look into the differences between North Korea and South Korea serve to highlight their point in an exceptional way.

Using history as a backdrop brings the lofty topic down to a more engaging level. Reading this book is enlightening, and those who are curious about the wider world will get much out of it.

Oh, my goodness, breakfast smells divine,” I said, bounding down the stairs two at a time toward the lip-smacking scent streaming from the kitchen. Rubbing my grumbling stomach, I peeked over Aunt Edie’s shoulder at the green gooey concoction boiling on the stove. I’ve been living with my aunt for the past eleven years since my parents died, and not once have I questioned her cooking abilities. Until now. I folded my arms and leant against the kitchen bench. “I know it smells amazing but are you sure it’s edible because it sure as heck doesn’t look like it.”

Aunt Edie frowned and her eyebrows pulled together. Her classic pondering expression. She snapped her fingers and looked straight at me with her golden honey-brown eyes glowing like she’d just solved the world’s climate crisis.

“Popcorn. I forgot the popcorn. Evelyn, honey be a dear and grab me the popcorn from the second shelf in the pantry. The caramel packet, not the plain.”

Caramel popcorn for breakfast? That’s a new one.

I shrugged. “Sure.” Walking into Aunt Edie’s pantry was like walking into the potions classroom at Hogwarts. Every witch’s dream pantry. Normal food on the left-hand side and on the right, every potion ingredient a witch could possibly need, clearly labelled in its allocated spot. Aunt Edie would always say: a place for everything and everything in its place.

“I can’t believe Halloween is only three days away,” I called, swiping the caramel popcorn bag off the shelf. Heading back out, the hunger monster growing in my stomach grumbled, clearly protesting the fact I still hadn’t satisfied its demand for food.

Blessed with a high emotional IQ, Phinn Reed enters the world with the promise of finding his soul mate. With heaven’s memories erased, his romantic quest teaches him that the heart often sees clearer than the eyes—and that not everyone has ordered the same items from The Menu. Evidence that love stories come in many different forms, The Menu is a spiritual journey involving more than just a man and a woman; it is a modern-day tale that reaches far beyond the boundaries of reason.

Can you find exactly what you want without ordering the perfect thing from the menu?

I’ve not read anything before by Steven Manchester, so this was a new to me author. This story is original. Phinn is in the world and trying to find his way. The writing moves along just fine and the characters are interesting.

This book does deal with abortion, so it might be a trigger for some readers. It’s inspirational in that the character of Phinn talks to his version of god while going along his way, but it’s also a bit of a fantasy story in that he’s allowed to order what he thinks he wants for a love story.

I liked that the characters aren’t perfect and I appreciated that they can’t always get what they want. It made me wonder while I read what I might have chosen had I the opportunity to pick from a menu. So in that respect, it does make one think.

This book isn’t what I’d normally pick for my reading. I like a distinctive line with the romance. The injected spirituality and religion is good, but not my cuppa. I also had a bit of an issue with this being listed as inspirational when there is discussion of romantic relations. I won’t give away spoilers, but this isn’t a sweet book. It’s more of a sensual story and might not be for some readers wanting purely sweet romance.

If you’re looking for a book that makes you think and look at the life, mostly your choices, a little differently, then this might be the book for you. Check it out.

If I’d never heard of me would I read my book?
Definitely, I would read it! Finding it mentioned somewhere, I’d think. “That’s an intriguing title. Fly Twice Backward: Fresh Starts in Times of Troubles.” I’d wonder what it could be about. We’re sure are in “Times of Troubles,” now, needing “Fresh Starts.” Reading the book’s description on Amazon, I’d quickly see impressive excerpts from reviews, with words like “masterpiece” and “classic” and high reviewer ratings, mostly 5’s. I’d also see “intolerant strains of the major religions” implicated in problems. This looks like a widescale defense of reason, along with attention to the personal side of the problems that greatly concern me, like ignorance and global warming, along with a teaser about one problem “I don’t dare to change”. Getting on into the blurb, I’d notice the lure of the birth family alive again and later ones gone perhaps forever, and the mention of knowledge to make the main character very wealthy. Sounds like material for fresh starts, along with doing something about worldwide problems.

A diverse and intriguing worldwide cast of characters is outlined, their descriptions raising questions only hinted at, one an ally who develops essential psychic powers, and “familiar-looking corrupt politicians, religious leaders, and corporate czars,” as well as “an ancient force in the background, promoting greed, violence, hate, and fear.”

Reading the Look Inside, I’d see the account is rich in the details of the family and the time, and a lure of other exotic characters. I’d also see the main character has human problems of trying to figure out whether this is real, what happened, and how to convince his family of it.

Would I read it? With a click of the Buy Now button, I’d have it downloaded and ready to be read eagerly!

You wake back in early adolescence, adult memories intact, including ones that could make you very wealthy now. Your birth family is here, alive again, but your later families are gone, perhaps forever. What has happened, what should you do about coming problems like violence, ignorance, pollution, and global warming? You realize one key connects most, the fundamentalist strains of all the major religions, disdaining science, equality, and social welfare. You see that there are some things you can change, some you can’t, and one you don’t dare to.

Fellow idealists help you spend your growing fortune well–such as an artistic Zoroastrian prince in the Iranian oil industry, a rising officer in the Soviet army working to find a way to destroy his corrupt government, a Bahai woman struggling against Islamic brutality, a Peruvian leader working for a liberal future, and a snake-handling Christian minister, grappling with doubts, sexuality, and destiny. They are supported by an ally who develops essential psychic powers. The group faces familiar-looking corrupt politicians, religious leaders, and corporate czars, but there is an ancient force in the background, promoting greed, violence, hate, and fear.

This exciting, emotional, thoughtful, humorous, and even romantic sci-fi novel weaves progressivism, music, movies, and literature into a struggle spanning the globe. Vivid characters propel the action back up through an alternative history toward an uncertain destination. Experience the unique story and its novel telling.

Waiting for breakfast, reading the Sunday paper at the table, I realize Mom’s not heading for the kitchen: Oh, oh! It’s church day. Mass. Fasting. Acolyting! What’m I going to do about that?

“Mom, am I supposed to serve today?”

“Of course!”

“Well, I can’t. I have no idea how to do that anymore. I guess we need to call Padre and tell him I’m sick.”

“No, David, we’re not playing that game today!”

“Mom, I hate to say this now, but I have no choice. I don’t know how to serve, so I can’t do it, and, frankly, I’m not ever going to do it. I’m an agnostic, a Unitarian, actually.”

She’s slamming the pots I washed and put in the drainer last night as she puts them into the cabinet under the counter. “That’s ridiculous. You don’t know enough to be an agnostic.”

Fortunately, Dad has come in and heard this exchange.

“Nev, whether his story is true or not, or he knows enough or not, he has a right not to go. He was old enough to be confirmed, so he’s old enough to choose. I’ll serve in his place.”

“Lie about being sick, on Sunday?”

“Mom, it’s a temporizer. I can’t reveal to him why I’m not going to today, much less why I’ll never again do it, and I know you wouldn’t want me to be open about it. I might not even be here next Sunday.” I chuckle. “Maybe I’ll have fallen back to age four, with Dad off in the Navy!” What a sharp look I get!

“We need a few days to sort this out, Nev.”

After three years in the U.S. Navy following a lackluster academic start, he graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1963, in Diplomacy and International Commerce. He then worked as a Latin American country desk officer in the U.S. Department of Commerce until he returned to school to earn an M.A. in Elementary Education in 1970 from Murray State University, having always been intending to teach. Eventually realizing his children qualified for reduced-price lunches based on his own teaching salary, he studied computer programming at Northern Virginia Community College and worked as a programmer until shifting back into elementary teaching.

He began working on what became Fly Twice Backward in 1983 and finally finished it in 2019! At 79, David strongly doubts he’ll be doing another novel of such scope and complexity, but is preparing to work on a children’s science fiction novel with a progressive bent, being a devout progressive in politics and religion, as well as a lover of learning.
