Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Book Quotes

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

I love quotes and it doesn’t matter where they come from – books, TV, movies, song lyrics – they just stick in my brain and come out at the most random of times.  Having a Kindle really helps with this obsession since I don’t have to stop and write them down any longer – I can just highlight and save for later.  Neat, huh?  Also, you should see my Kindle Notes and Highlights.

Here are some of my favorites, and I hope I didn’t repeat any from the last time we did this topic.

“Don’t swim with the dolphins during a labor dispute. No matter how much they try to convince you otherwise” ― John Scalzi, Starter Villain

‘That’s the role of poetry, Ciri. To say what others cannot utter.’ – Andrzej Sapkowski, The Time of Contempt

“This is who I am. I can’t change. I don’t want to, really. But for once I’m gonna put this devil inside me to good use.” – S. A. Cosby, Razorblade Tears

“Guncle Rule number eight: Live your life to the fullest every single day, because every day is a gift. That’s why people die. To teach us the importance of living.” – Steven Rowley, The Guncle

I usually define fear as the thing I feel when the unexpected happens. Anxiety is when I’m doing something that I already know is stupid. – Andrew Mayne, Black Coral

A clever, thoughtless person is one of the most terrifying things there is. – Patrick Rothfuss, The Name of the Wind

Intimidation was a drug. But control was an illusion. – Meg Gardiner, Into the Black Nowhere

In her mind, where the line between fact and fiction is often blurred, murder is simply a solution to a problem. – B. A. Paris, Behind Closed Doors

Perhaps a heart was indeed like a piece of dry birchwood, and could only take fire and burn brightly once—that any fire that came after would be only an ember, smaller and cooler. – Tad Williams, Shadowmarch

“I’ve seen too much of the underside of life to have much confidence in people. I don’t really believe in happy endings.” I felt him swallow. “But I’ve come to believe in you.” – Kathy Reichs, Grave Secrets

I highly recommend all of the books I’ve quoted here, especially Starter Villain by John Scalzi.  He has this amazing way of taking the ridiculous and making it make sense.  Much like Douglas Adams did.  And, on that note, one last bonus quote for the road:

“There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.” – Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

  1. I don’t think I know any of these authors or the quotes. But I do love a good quote… I just wish I remembered them better. If I don’t write them down or make a graphic for Pinterest of the quote, I don’t remember them since I don’t read on Kindle. 😉

    • Back in the day before e-readers, I had a notebook I’d write them all down in. LOL And honestly, with the exception of a few like, “This must be a Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.”, I don’t remember them either. It’s only when they’re very applicable to my daily life that they stick! 😀

  2. I loved that quote in the Guncle – I can’t wait for the second book next week!

  3. You have some great quotes here. Although I’ve never read any of these novels, the Steven Rowley quote hit home in so many ways! Thank you for sharing!

I hope you have a great Tuesday.

The Guncle was such a great book, I highly recommend it. I was going through something similar to the main character at the time I read it and it all – especially that quote – really resonated with me.

  4. Aw, I like that Reichs quote. I should return to that series.

  5. The Scalia book was very quotable!

I just read Hitchhikers Guide for the first time 🤣 thanks for dropping by my post!

  7. I like the one from the Guncle book. Every time someone dies, I’m reminded of the importance of living and living well.

    Happy TTT!

I agree, Susan! And I read this book about a year after I lost someone close to me, so it hit extra hard. But also gave me hope.

  8. I enjoyed those quotes. I especially liked The Guncle one.

    Have a great week!

  9. ‘That’s the role of poetry, Ciri. To say what others cannot utter.’ I love this and think that is why I read poetry! Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.

Thank you! And I agree. There’s a song by a country artist named Gary Allan that basically says he writes songs to sing about the things he can’t talk about and that’s stuck with me.

  10. I love the Andrew Mayne quote from Black Coral. I remember that quote from when I read the book. Excellent list!

  11. I’ve not heard of these books before, but the quotes are pretty excellent!

  12. Also my Kindle is full of notes, when I was a teenager I did write them down in a notebook, but it is much easier to just underline the sentences

    • Lasreviews says

I did the same, but tech like this did not exist when I was a teen either. Hahaha. But I wholeheartedly agree – so much easier to drag your finger along the e-reader. LOL

  13. What a great post! I love that you’re able to recall quotes from books so easily – I can do that for movies, but when it comes to books, I have a complete blockage for recalling quotes. You’ve chosen some really wonderful quotes, and I’m a huge fan of Kathy Reichs and how she writes, but others that I didn’t know had fantastic and relatable quotes too.

    • Lasreviews says

Thank you! Hah – that’s not my memory, that’s my Kindle. 😀 But it’s funny because I can remember song lyrics or movie quotes, but rarely book quotes. I love Kathy Reichs, too, and am thrilled you enjoyed the other quotes as well.

  14. The last one by Douglas Adams is great. I am going to look for the author whom you have described as Adams. Thanks for leaving the link when you visited my blog.
