Whenever I’m in the mood for a long read, I love digging into family sagas and ideally following the same individuals and their descendants for decades if not even longer than that. With that being said, shorter periods of time are okay, too.
It doesn’t matter if the characters are fictional or based on real people. Either way there is nothing like getting to know a large extended family well and seeing what happens to their children and grandchildren.
Here are some fantastic family sagas which is my topic of choice for this week’s relationship freebie post.
1. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez
2. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
3. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
4. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
5.Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
6. A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley
7. Roots: The Saga of an American Family by Alex Haley
8. A Place for Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza
9. The Good Earth (House of Earth, #1) by Pearl S. Buck
10. Legends of the Fall by Jim Harrison
Same! I love a thick, juicy family saga. I’ve read a couple of these, but there are several I need to take a closer look at.
Happy TTT!

Aren’t they the best?
“For you, a thousand times over!” I should have mentioned Hosseini. Such a great work!
Thank you. 🙂
When I’m in the right mood, I do love a good family saga. Rosamunde Pilcher wrote some great ones. I’m working on the Clifton Chronicles series by Jeffrey Archer. It’s a bit soap opera-ish but it’s a fun family saga too. Great topic!
Oh, cool! Enjoy and thanks. 🙂
I haven’t ever read any of these, but I recognize the titles of a couple. A good family saga is always interesting. I read a few that had five or six kids and it’s fun because that means we usually get a novel for each sibling! 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting my website today.
You’re welcome. Ooh, those sagas sound good.
I have read these, but these sound like they’re really immersive and good to lose yourself in.
For sure. 🙂
Great list! I love love love Amy Tan! Happy Tuesday!
Thank you. Happy Tuesday to you as well.
Very good topic. I’ve read a couple of these and was forced to endure Grapes of Wrath in high school English in the 1970s (I’ve liked other books by Steinbeck) Have you read the Tortilla Curtain by TC Boyle–a modern day Grapes of Wrath?
No, never, but it does sound good.
I’ve read and enjoyed a few of these – One Hundred Years of Solitute, The Joy Luck Club and Like Water for Chocolate. It’s odd, because I don’t ever search out family sagas, but at the same time some of my favourite books are such sagas! If you enjoyed One Hundred Years of Solitude and Like Water for Chocolate I’d highly recommend Isabel Allende. The House of the Spirits is a great one to start with (and I think is the beginning of a series, too) though I also enjoyed Eva Luna. Great post!
I’m looking it up now. Thanks.
Some fantastic titles on your lists, all really powerful reads.
Thank you.
Goodness it’s years since I read Roots but I loved that one.
It was so good.
This is a good list! I’ve only read horse heaven by Smiley but I don’t see her mentioned much anymore!
Honestly, neither do I!
Great list! You have some many great books on here (Joy Luck Club, Like Water for Chocolate, One Hundred Years of Solitude…)
Here’s my list if you want to take a look: https://franlaniado.wordpress.com/2024/08/20/top-ten-tuesday-friend-groups-id-do-well-in/
Thank you. 🙂 I’ll come over and say hello now.
Oooh, great list! It’s been ages since I read Like Water for Chocolate, but I remember really enjoying it.
Thanks for stopping by my TTT earlier!
You’re welcome. Wasn’t that a good read?
I’ve read all but two of your books and I agree on what great family sagas they all are! Thanks for this list.
You’re welcome. 🙂
I can really dig into a good family saga! Fantastic list!
Yay!
Family sagas can be so good! Great list and I don’t think I’ve read any of these!
Thank you.
One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of my “goal” books –I’ve started and not finished it twice, but I really want to actually get through it. And I still need to read The Grapes of Wrath — I’ve loved so many of Steinbeck’s books. Of the ones on your list that I’ve read, The Joy Luck Club is a favorite — love the mother-daughter relationships. Great list!
Thank you. I hope you like those two.
I love the theme, The Buendia are an interesting family, but somewhat confusing with so many repeated names.
That’s a good point!
I really like Like Water for Chocolate, I read it in Spanish years ago but don’t remember the details as much as the feeling of loving it! 🙂
Same here. 🙂
I don’t read many family sagas, but these titles sound interesting.
Have a great week!
Thank you.
I can enjoy a good family saga too. Great list! I’ve wanted to read Like Water for Chocolate.
May you enjoy it!
What a great list, I read six of your books and Like Water for Chocolate has been on my wishlist for a while now. Well done.
Thank you for visiting my post.

Oh, cool. I hope you like that one, too.
I seriously love this twist on the prompt! There’s nothing I like more than diving into a family saga that is an absolute chonk of a book, because I know it’s going to hold my attention for a while. I loved at least half the books on your list, and I feel like the only reason I didn’t love all of them is because I’ve only read half of them (although I reserve a special dislike for One Hundred Years of Solitude). Another one you’d probably really enjoy is Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, which is an amazing book.
Thank you! And, yes, exactly.
I’m looking up Homegoing now. Thanks for the recommendation.
You make me want to reread One Hundred Years of Solitude, I remember loving it! It’s been a long time though…
May you enjoy it. 🙂
