Top Ten Tuesday: Books that Live Up to the Hype

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Welcome to another edition of Top Ten Tuesday!  This week’s topic is Books that Live Up to the Hype.  I’m typically wary of hype.  Hearing that “everyone” is reading a book doesn’t necessarily make me want to read it.  I’ve never felt the need to keep up with new releases, and I tend to read a lot of books from smaller publishers through my work at Long and Short Reviews.  Also, if the book doesn’t live up to the hype, it is extremely disappointing.  That being said, hype does make me curious.  More often than not, I will eventually read much hyped books.  I’ll just do it when I’m in the mood.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer-I didn’t hear about this series until I started participating in Top Ten Tuesday.  So many people expressed their love for the stories and characters.  I’m a fan of fairy tale retellings so I read the entire series this year.  It was great!

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco-This is another one I heard about through Top Ten Tuesday.  I really need to get my hands on the second book!

Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling-I didn’t read this series until I was an adult.  I have vague memories of hearing about when I was in high school and college but I was always reading something else.  When I finally got around to these books I loved them!

The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins-I was definitely wary of these books as I’m not really in to dystopian fiction.  However, I had a very good friend recommend them to me.  She also wanted to go see the movie.  Since I wanted to read the books first, I picked up the series at my local bookstore.  Once I started reading, I couldn’t put them down!

Elephant and Piggie Series by Mo Willems-I discovered this series when taking my children to the library.  Everyone kept talking about how much their kids liked these books.  I checked a few out and they are really fun!  Mo Willems’ Pigeon Series is also very good.

Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead-The same friend who recommended The Hunger Games recommended this series to me, and I enjoyed it.  More importantly it introduced me to the spin off series Bloodlines which I liked even more!

Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer-I know this series inspires very strong emotions, but hear me out.  I got into this series right before the first movie came out (on the recommendation of that same friend).  I found the books to be quick, entertaining reads that I enjoyed in the moment.

I’m not sure if the rest of the books on my list received a lot of hype when they were first released, but they have since become classics and remain very popular.  I think that counts as hype, and I believe they are all worth checking out if you haven’t read them already.

The Lord of the Rings Series by J.R.R. Tolkien

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

  1. The Lunar Chronicles are fantastic! I really admire how Marissa Meyer managed to juggle a big cast of characters… it’s something that strikes me as easy to do wrong and hard to do right…

    • Poinsettia says

I agree! She managed all those characters very well. Who was your favorite? I’m partial to Thorne. He is so much fun!

  2. Funny enough I didn’t actually like Stalking Jack the Ripper but LOVED Hunting Prince Dracula

  3. I forgot to put The Lunar Chronicles on my list this week! I’ve still to finish the series, but Cinder is one of the first books I read when I started blogging.

  4. I adore The Lunar Chronicles. It’s so good! 🙂 Fab list!

  5. I love most of the books on your list! The others I haven’t heard off so will definitely check them out!

    Thanks for checking out thebookbloglife.com

    🙂

  6. A lot of these series I haven’t yet read… but they’re on my tbr. I did read the first book in the Vampire Academy series but don’t remember it now as it was so long ago 😛 Need to do a reread! Anyway, great picks and thanks for stopping by! 🙂

    • Poinsettia says

I enjoyed the Vampire Academy series, and as I said, I liked the spin off Bloodlines even more. I hope you get a chance to check them out.

      Thanks for visiting. 🙂

  7. Super excited about “Stalking Jack the Ripper.” It’s kind of outside my comfort zone, but still I’m curious! Also, though I never read (or hardly ever) classic literature, it’s always fun to see those on favorites lists! If the films are anything to judge by, I know the books are amazing. 🙂

    Thanks for visiting Finding Wonderland.

    • Poinsettia says

I hope you get a chance to read Stalking Jack the Ripper. I really enjoyed it and need to read the next book soon!

Thanks for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  8. Brittaney B says

I’m finally getting around to Stalking Jack the Ripper.

  9. One of these days I’ll have to check out The Lunar Chronicles. The only ones on your new list that I’ve read are The Hunger Games (I’ve read that series in both English and Spanish).

I read Lord of the Rings before (although I had really bad memory problems at the time due to Aspartame poisoning so I don’t remember as much as I should) and Jane Eyre, but that was when I was a kid.

    • Poinsettia says

I was late reading The Lunar Chronicles and binge read the series. I really enjoyed it. I hope you get a chance to check it out!

  10. I definitely want to try and read Lord of the Rings at some point but because I have seen the movies I keep putting it off! I loved The Hunger Games too ? Great choices!

    • Poinsettia says

      Thank you!

Fortunately, I read Lord of the Rings before the movies came out. The movies do follow the books very well, but they do leave some stuff out so I think it would still be worth it to read the books if you get a chance.

The Hunger Games was great! I literally couldn’t put that book/series down. I’d be trying to cook with one hand and have the book in the other!

Thanks so much for stopping by and chatting!

  11. If you liked Stalking Jack the Ripper, you will definitely love the rest of the series! They’re such good books! 🙂

    • Poinsettia says

I’m really looking forward to the rest of the series! So glad to here the other books are just as good. 🙂

  12. Amy @ Amy's Bookish LIFE says

  13. i’ve heard such good things about Stalking Jack the Ripper! I need to give this one a try as its on everyone’s list!!!

  14. I didn’t read the Harry Potter series until just a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. I thought about adding it to my list. I loved the Hunger Games series. I thought about adding it to my list as well, but I read it before I ever heard it was a hyped series. I read it years before I ever started blogging, so I had no clue about it haha. It got me into reading YA though.

    • Poinsettia says

I have so many books I want to read that I’m always behind when it comes to hyped books. I get to them eventually.

      Thanks for visiting!

  15. I have loved most of the books on your awesome list, with the exception of Lord of the Rings (I found it too slow lol)

    • Poinsettia says

I’m glad you enjoyed most of my list. 🙂 I understand that Lord of the Rings isn’t for everyone. At least you gave it a try.

      Thanks for commenting!

  16. I loved pretty much all the books on your list. I haven’t read Stalking Jack the Ripper yet, but it’s on TBR list. Hopefully I’ll be able to get to it soon.

    • Poinsettia says

I’m glad you enjoyed my list! I hope you get to read Stalking Jack the Ripper soon.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  17. I’ve heard so many good things about Stalking Jack the Ripper, I think I’ll have to add it to the tbr list!

    • Poinsettia says

That’s why I read it! I thought the premise sounded interesting and I consistently heard good things about it. I hope you get a chance to read it soon!

      Thanks for visiting. 🙂

  18. Grace @ Rebel Mommy Book Blog says

Lots of good ones! I didn’t have Hunger Games on my list but it totally lived up to the hype!

  19. I completely agree with you on Hunger Games (though I forgot to add it to my own list) – I raced through the first one and immediately seeked out the rest of the trilogy! So good. Thanks for stopping by The Hungry Bookworm today – hope to see you again! 🙂

  20. I think I read VA, because of hype too, and I really liked the series. I happen to like the spinoff even more.

    • Poinsettia says

Me too! I don’t come across many people who feel the same way I do.

Thanks for visiting and commenting. 🙂

  21. I love Stalking Jack the Ripper so much. The second book is just as good. I hope you get a chance to read it soon.

  22. This is a great list and I agree with so many of your choices, especially Harry Potter and The Lunar Chronicles. Loved both of them so much!

  23. Great list! I totally agree about the The Lunar Chronicles!

  24. The Hunger Games lived up to the hype for me too! I didn’t love the ending of the trilogy but the first book was incredible.

    • Poinsettia says

I agree. The first book was definitely the best. While I enjoyed the trilogy, the third book was my least favorite. I was hoping for more character development, and I do think the ending lacked something since the rest of the series was so epic.

      Thanks for visiting!

  25. Good choices! Lord of the Rings is good. I also enjoyed the Twilight Series.

    • Poinsettia says

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed my list.

Yes, The Lord of the Rings is wonderful! I’m also glad to hear something positive about the Twilight series. It receives a lot of hate these days, but I thought they were fun.

      Thanks for commenting!

  26. I LOVE THE LUNAR CHRONICLES AND HARRY POTTER! Hunger Games is also the bomb

  27. I love the Lunar Chronicles, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games Trilogy, too. So good. And the hype was worth it.

  28. I was the same way with The Hunger Games. I was very late to THAT party but when I finally read them I loved ’em! And I would like to try Vampire academy and/ or Bloodlines at some point, as I do like a good urban fantasy read from time to time!

    • Poinsettia says

I’m late getting to a lot of series. Part of me wishes I would have read The Hunger Games sooner, but then I also loved being able to devour all three books one right after the other!

      Thanks for visiting. 🙂

  29. I totally agree – The Lunar Chronicles is one that kept appearing in TTTs and I was worried it wouldn’t live up to the hype but oh it so did. A brilliant series!!

    • Poinsettia says

I was a bit apprehensive as well, especially since I love fairy tales, but Marissa Meyer did an excellent job.

      Thanks for commenting!

  30. I still need to finish TLC but Cinder is awesome! And I haven’t read Stalking Jack the Ripper but I’ve heard good things and it sounds great. Lovely list! <3

    • Poinsettia says

Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed my list.

I hope you finish The Lunar Chronicles soon. The series gets better with each book!

  31. The Lunar series is tempting but the hype does keep me wary of it. I have book one so one day I’ll get there. lol

  32. Ooh, Elephant and Piggie are so cute!

Check out my TTT and please vote in my Make Me Read It Readathon poll

  33. The Lunar Chronicles FOR SURE!!!! Great list 🙂

  34. I so so loved The Hunger Games! I kind of read it before the movies and all the huge amounts of wild online fame at least, though, so I didn’t really know how hyped it was? I was a bit oblivious before blogging haha. ? But DEFINITELY worth all the love! I also adore Harry Potter (of course!), The Lunar Chronicles, and Stalking Jack the RIpper too!

    • Poinsettia says

I’m glad you enjoyed my list!

I’m kind of oblivious too. Even when I started reviewing for Long and Short Reviews, as I said, I read a lot of books from smaller/independent publishers so a book/series would have to be massively popular to get my attention sometimes. Participating in TTT has made me much more aware. 🙂

      Thanks for visiting!

  35. Oooh yes! I agree with so many of these! Great list 😀

  36. I was just looking at Stalking Jack the Ripper at Barnes over the weekend. I thought it was BY James Patterson, I wasn’t aware he had his own publishing company these days! Definitely going to have to check that one out.

  37. I loved Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. They made my list, and they’re some of my favorite series ever.

  38. Pride and Prejudice. I love that one.

  39. This is a great list and I completely agree with so many of them! I need to finally read The Lunar Chronicles and Stalking Jack the Ripper soon!

    • Poinsettia says

      Thank you!

I hope you get a chance to pick up The Lunar Chronicles and Stalking Jack the Ripper soon. They are both very good!

  40. Great list! I haven’t read the Lunar Chronicles even though there’s so much hype around it XD

    • Poinsettia says

I hope you get a chance to check it out! I really enjoyed it and felt that the series improved with each book. 🙂

  41. This is a great list and I agree with so many of your choices, especially Harry Potter and The Lunar Chronicles. Loved both of them so much!
