Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Avoided Because of the Hype

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Here are ten books I avoided reading in large part because of how hyped up they were. Generally, I tend not to be a big fan of stories that are marketed as the next hot read, although of course there are always exceptions to that rule.

As I haven’t read them, it’s hard to speculate whether or not I would have liked them after all. I suspect that part of the prompt is easier to answers for participants who chose to talk about hyped books they did end up reading!

1. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

2.When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

3. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

4. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

5. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

6. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

7. The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

8. American Gods by Neil Gaiman

9.Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

10. Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

How often does your taste in books match up with what everyone is talking about on Booktok or other similar bookish places online?

  1. I personally loved Crawdads, in part because it was an interesting mix of character drama and nature writing. I wouldn’t have tried it but literally everyone in my book club had already read it and I was kind of curious given that this club is composed of VERY different people. I personally haven’t avoided a series because it was popular in a long time: usually if I avoid something it’s because I have specific reasons, like not bothering with 50 Shades because I don’t read sex novels. XD I decided to go with my favorite Teaser Tuesday from the last year, though my review won’t be live until midnight CST.

  2. Red, White, and Royal Blue was a lot of fun. And it’s too bad Neil Gaiman has revealed himself to be a disappointment, because I think you might have enjoyed American Gods.

  3. I’ve read a couple of the books mentioned here, and while they were fine, none of them became favourites.

  4. Oh, I’d loved #3, #5 and #6 so much! I picked them up because I saw them recced on some blogs that I followed back in the day, but I do also remember the crazy hype around them

  5. I’ve avoided a couple of these myself! ~Carol @ ReadingLadies

  6. I have a pretty wide variety of books I enjoy, so I often enjoy hyped books, but not always. I hope you have a great week.

Here’s my TTT if you wish to visit – https://justanothergirlandherbooks.blogspot.com/2024/09/top-ten-tuesday-books-i-bought-because.html

  7. I love a few of these! The Cruel Prince, Crawdads, Fangirl & Red, White & Royal Blue. If you do decide to try them one day when the hype is a memory, I hope you enjoy them.

  8. I read The Cruel Prince as an experiment after not enjoying Holly Black previously. I was actually pleasantly surprised. I don’t know that it quite lived up to the hype for me, but it was a really fun book nonetheless.

  9. I don’t pay much attention to what’s popular. I have certain authors and/or publishers I like and stick with that. If I want something new, I very much judge a book by its cover. I haven’t heard of any of these because of that.

  10. Thanks for stopping by my blog today! There are a few on your list that I read and enjoyed, but what I love about the book world is that there are so many options, everyone will find something they love!

  11. I really enjoyed The Cruel Prince series. If you ever get to it, I hope you enjoy.

  12. I’ve got Crawdads on my TBR pile. A Court of Thorns and Roses was good, but the rest of the series was better!!

    Have a great week!

  13. I also read all of these because of the hype, some I enjoyed, others not so much.

  14. I’ve read two of these and neither were big hits for me. That’s usually the case with me and hyped-up books!

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

  15. More often than not, my tastes do not meet. I have the Crows book somewhere on my Kindle Perhaps I will get to it one of these days.

  16. Hype can be such a tricky thing indeed! I did read and ended up enjoying quite a few books from your list, but I totally get staying away from them to avoid getting burned by the hype. Best to just pick up the books you want to read yourself instead of what seems to be the new best thing.

  17. Anita@seriesbooklover says

I did read Creul Prince and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it!

  18. I read The Cruel Prince and American Gods without knowing about any hype and I loved both of them. I don’t tend to let hype influence how I feel about a book, but it does make me more curious so I end up reading them sooner than I normally might.

  19. My taste doesn’t always align with what’s trending on BookTok, although I’m much more likely to see books I’ve enjoyed on Instagram. Maybe I fall in the middle – because I’ve read half of these and generally enjoyed them.

  20. I should have included ‘Dimple Met Rishi’ on my list! I never read it, but did buy it because of hype. It also did sound fun, too. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting my list last week. Apologies I’m just now returning the favor.

  21. I enjoyed The Raven Boys. But that is just generally the kind of thing I like in YA apparently (as I did read something in a similar fashion and loved it as well haha_)
