Long and Short Reviews has a small team of people who take turns writing Top Ten Tuesday posts. I feel excited every time Freebie posts pop up and try to request them as often as I can.
This week I’m going to use the freebie post to share ten bookish summer quotes.
“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”
―
“All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.”
― Anne’s House of Dreams
“The library in summer is the most wonderful thing because there you get books on any subject and read them each for only as long as they hold your interest, abandoning any that don’t, halfway or a quarter of the way through if you like, and store up all that knowledge in the happy corners of your mind for your own self and not to show off how much you know or spit it back at your teacher on a test paper.”
― My One Hundred Adventures
“I have only to break into the tightness of a strawberry, and I see summer – its dust and lowering skies.”
― The Bluest Eye
“It was summer and moonlight and we had lemonade to drink, and we held the cold glasses in our hands, and Dad read the stereo-newspapers inserted into the special hat you put on your head and which turned the microscopic page in front of the magnifying lens if you blinked three times in succession.”
― The Illustrated Man
“The sound of crickets, the feel of warm dried grass on the soles of his feet and the scent of baked earth pleased him. The big thick glass was icy in his hands. When he set it down, the tinkle of the ice cubes sounded personal.”
― Lessons
“There are not enough jam jars to can this
summer sky at night. I want to spread those
little meteors on a hunk of still-warm bread this
winter. Any trace left on the knife will make a kitchen sink like that evening air
the cool night before
star showers: so sticky so warm so full of light”
―
“The thing about a deep summer’s evening is that it is filled with an array of sounds that never intrude on the silence because they were created to accentuate it, not fill it.”
―
Meeting someone on a summer’s evening is like giving a dead flame new life.”
― Open Water
“And I spent a wonderful summer, below the trees in the Godavari, writing my poetry.”
― Why the Silhouette?
What are your favorite bookish summer quotes?
Oooh, I haven’t seen a quotes list before! You picked some really good ones!
Thank you. They seemed to be more popular picks for Top Ten Tuesday freebie posts a few years back, but I still like to do them now and again. 🙂
Oh, wow! I really like that Nezhukumatathil quote.
Isn’t it great? 🙂
Fun take on it this week!
Thank you. 🙂
The quote from Open Water is lovely!
So glad you think so.
So fun!! I love that you feature summer book quotes. That’s a very fitting way to go this week and it was even more fun to see one by L.M. Montgomery here, too. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting my website today. Appreciate this.
You’re welcome. Thanks for stopping by.
Neat collection!
I’m not sure I have one, but it was a nice idea of freebie post. I like the first one. I wonder where he wrote that
Thank you. I wonder that, too!
Summer when I was young seemed endless and wonderful. These days sometimes it seems too hot! I love the thought of an English summer afternoon.
I feel the same way. 🙂
Nice summer quotes. They all, in their own way, capture an essence of summer.
Thank you very much!
Wow, you remember these quotes? I NEVER do and always forget them as soon as I’ve read them.
I remembered a couple of them but had to look up the rest. 🙂
I also love when we get a TTT Freebie! I really enjoyed these summer quotes.
Fun! And thank you.
Oh very nice! These are new to me quotes! They all are very summer like!

What a lovely idea for a post. The quotes all ooze summer and reading them made me quite happy!
Thank you. 🙂
Anne’s House of Dreams is one of my favourite books EVER.
It’s lovely! I want to hug all of the characters in it.
I enjoyed these, especially the Toni Morrison one, as summer is my favorite time of year.
Very cool! Yeah, Morrison has a wonderful way with words.
These are so lovely! I hope you’re enjoying your summer.
Thank you. So far it’s been a good summer. I hope you can say the same thing. 🙂
Wow! This is a really great post idea, and I love the quotes you chose. The Nelson one especially spoke to me.
Thank you, Leah. I’m glad to hear it.

You’re welcome. I’m glad you liked my post.
Great idea! I love the freebie weeks, too, especially because I find it so hard to get the TTT posts done on time each week. I did a summer theme this week, too — Books That Look Like Summer in New England.
Thank you. I like your theme this week!
These are all so lovely! I love the first one 🙂
Thank you.
These quotes were all so fun! Thanks for sharing them!
Here’s my TTT post.

L.M. Montgomery has the best quotes about nature. I love the one you choice
Thank you. Didn’t she have a wonderful way with words?
These are awesome! I love the nature writing. I’m bad at keeping track of quotes.
Thank you.
I have trouble keeping track of quotes, too. Thank goodness for sites that have tons of them!
