Favorite Things about Winter by JS Harker – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes JS Harker who is celebrating the upcoming release of her newest book Tit for Tat by sharing with us her favorite things about winter.

*****

I am one of those few, few people (or so it seems) who adores a cold winter season. Living in the Midwest, we can see quite a range in temp and length of winter. Seemed like every time I sat down to work on Tit For Tat more snow would pour out of the skies. Flynn, a Winter fairy, would agree with me that winter’s the best time of year (and I liked blaming him for our extra snow this last year!) So, I figured, as much as winter gets a bad reputation, I’d share my favorite five things about this time of year.

5. Having an excuse to watch Muppet Christmas Carol. Technically this is only good up until Dec. 25th, but this remains my favorite Muppet movie. I’ve adapted the line “After all there’s only one more sleep ‘til Christmas” to just about anything I get excited for.

4. Sledding. The freefall down a side of a hill is just sheer fun for the few seconds it takes to reach the bottom. My grandparents had this awesome hill in their backyard. Hills, really. There was one side with the bigger drop and then one set that if done right meant three dips.

3. Long, snowy days. There’s something peaceful in the constant motion of fluffy snowflakes tumbling from the sky from morning until night. The outside world seems a little quieter for it.

2. Peppermint flavored/scented everything. I’m not sure when peppermint became synonymous with the Christmas season, but I love the sudden uptick. From extra candle scents to hand creams to coffees, peppermint is just everywhere. Hold on, I’ve got to go find a candy cane. 😉

1. The cold. I like the way cold feels on my face. It’s sharp and unyielding. Layering on clothes combats it, but sometimes the wind shoves its way in. And let’s face it, warming up with coffee or other hot drinks is really amazing only after we get cold enough to appreciate it.

Cold has never been so hot.

College sophomore Derek is busy working over his holiday break—but his shifts at the toy store are no hardship if they mean more opportunity to dream about the sexy new guy working as an elf in Santa’s Workshop. When his mother gifts him a bag of cookies, Derek regifts them to Flynn as an excuse to get to know him. Flynn has presents to offer as well, and soon they’re dating, with Derek finding out his comfort zone is bigger than he imagined.

But Flynn is hiding a secret—he’s really a winter fairy whose magic is bound to the season. He can’t stay in the mortal realm, and Derek doesn’t want to lose contact with his family. Can they find a way to hold on to each other when the snow and sugar plums melt away?

About the Author:
JS Harker loves stories. She was one of those kids who always had a book in her hands and spent many hours adventuring with her siblings. These days she wanders into her imaginary worlds and conjures up tales of magic, passion, and happily-ever-afters. She currently lives in the part of the Midwest that makes Tatooine look interesting by comparison (not that she’s ever obsessively thought about becoming a Jedi or anything).

When not writing or reading, she catches up on far too much television and spends time running around in video games.
