They were all well drawn and the dialogue was natural sounding. Most of the PI stories I’ve read tend to be gritty but I found this one to be more regular mystery with a cast of potential baddies who had you continually guessing about the identity of the blackmailer.

Mr. Waymire has a clever way of building the plot to a crescendo at just the right moment. There’s action and mystery that piqued my interest and kept me glued to the pages to see how Keirstad would spoil the villains plans.

If you have ten or fifteen minutes to spare, and if you’re a die hard mystery fan who likes a PI as a lead character, this very short story will be a good pick for you.

She could actually be one of your best friends who’s going through a rough patch which I felt was the most enjoyable part of this story. There’s that push pull thing that makes this sort of story fun, too. And when she does make the decision, I felt like I was actually thrown into her next dilemma; two hunky guys waiting for attention.

First person narration always draws me into a story and this one not only drew me in but kept me entertained for the entire story. It’s told through the heroine’s eyes and begins with a little intrigue and then turns into a very sexy read. The Hourglass is not only the title of this book but the instrument used to count down how long the hero will ‘punish’ the heroine for breaking into his library. Punish really isn’t a good word for what he does to her. Let’s just say I wish I was the one being punished because Ms. Weller did a wonderful job teasing me and putting me on the edge of my seat wondering what he was going to do next and whether the hourglass run out before he got a chance to do it.

The scene in the library is just the beginning of this entertaining read. It’s short on dialogue but I think it made it all the more unique. Ms. Weller gave the heroine a wonderful voice that could have only been told through first person narration. If you’re looking for an erotic romance this might or might not be for you. However, if you like erotica with a touch of romance, this will is a must read.

I highly recommend this one and I’ll be looking for more stories by this author.

I especially liked the way the author told this story and how it unfolded in just seventeen pages. It felt longer and I mean that in a good way. Ms. Parker packed a lot of story into this short read. As with any good mystery I kept wondering what would happen next. What I really liked was she had me guessing who was going to be the victim of the crime. It was a surprise, and then I found myself wanting to read on to find out who did it.

And to add even more layers to this story, she added a touch of romance that was enjoyable, too. This is a quick and very fun read for anyone who likes a good whodunit with a cast of British characters and a country setting.

Jealousy, bad food, good food and a lot of frazzled nerves weave their way around the mystery of who cooked the cook. I never realized chefs led such frenetic and dangerous lives until I opened up Cook the Books and discovered how different restaurant kitchen life can be.

This is a mystery series that’s ongoing but this is my first time tasting the adventure. I didn’t feel too lost because the author provided just enough back story for a new reader to understand that there’s some serious water under the bridge between the main female protagonist, Chloe, and a man who, for a bit of the story, is in the background, Josh. I can’t label him a hero because he’s not the focus, he’s more like a side kick with romantic overtones. His character does stir the pot a bit and shakes things up so a reader can see Chloe in action.

Chloe is the eye of the storm and the winds of chaos seem to swirl about her character. The ambiance of the food world never abates and is a solid and steady theme throughout the book. The premise of finding a job to support a bad habit is believable, and having so much responsibility heaped upon one person’s shoulders is a breakdown waiting to happen. Good thing the heroine has a few good friends and some seriously effective distractions to keep her mind occupied. Unfortunately, they’re not the good kind.

The mystery is who killed one of her chef acquaintances. I don’t believe he was a true friend but he was a person in her circle who perhaps readers might have met in previous books in the series. It was interesting how the search for clues was handled. I wasn’t flooded with a lot of misdirection and red herrings. It was left to my finding out important clues when Chloe got them which made a lot of sense since this story is told in first person point of view. If the heroine didn’t get it, neither did I, until the author wanted us to.

The romantic elements are there so it adds a little spice and lightness to the dark drama and suspense of finding their friend’s killer.

Cook the Books is an entertaining, light and zippy mystery with a lot of character. Most of the book is about Chloe and how she starts off doing something so basic and innocent and how it ends up spinning out of control onto a path totally unforeseen. Readers are teased with all these great sounding food dishes but the authors have guaranteed that our taste buds will join in on the fun by giving us the actual recipes so we can experience our own gastronomic adventures. I liked Chloe’s friends and found the fact that she’s still learning about herself interesting. The writing was good, the pace steady and the dialogue was insightful into the characters.

All in all Cook the Books is a fun read and it makes a person wonder just what is it going to take to iron out the relationship between Josh and Chloe. Guess I’ll have to read the next book and find out what new mayhem dogs the heroine’s steps. Should be good!

As is often typical with twins, the brothers are complete opposites. Mark is playful and easy-going where Aaron is more serious and sweet. I enjoyed the dynamics of the story and the way these three characters interacted.

I won’t give away any more of the plot but if you’re looking for a page turner in the erotic department this is certainly one to check out. It’s a non-stop romp that is also a fast read and perfect for ménage fans.

When things get more threatening, I kept reading, wondering if Wyatt could save her from this obviously crazy stalker. There’s more at stake for them and for the reader when they become physically involved. The pacing is fast and this is a story you’ll enjoy reading in one sitting.

I couldn’t wait for the ending to see how it all turned out and who was behind the threats. I also wanted to see what would happen to Wyatt and Chloe once the threat was over. I won’t give away the ending but let’s just say you’ll be more than satisfied.

If you like hot stories with plenty of suspense, I’d say give Crescendo a read. And I’ll be checking out more stories in this series.

Daniel, her partner in helping her solve the vicious murder, is likeable and very realistic. Even though he’s a mortal and she’s not, you get a feeling that this will be a good match, both on and off the job.

Despite this being a full length novel, the pacing was fast. I found myself reading more and more at each sitting to find out what would happen next. The secondary characters are well drawn too and everyone’s dialogue is natural sounding. I thought the mystery and romance was well balanced. I must admit I’m partial to a good suspense story. This was the first time I’d read one that was a solid mystery with a paranormal twist. Something I’m now hooked on and would like to see more of.

Five ‘MUST HAVES’ in Paranormal Romance

Thank you for having me on the Long and Short Reviews blog today. Creating paranormal/fantasy romance is not only what I do for my day job, but a job I enjoy. I write several different series. All have fantasy and paranormal elements to them so the following five components are something I strive for in my writing process.

First: Well-developed male and female characters. Personally, I enjoy romance characters who deliver their internal thoughts with their external actions. I want to be inside their head. I also find that the more memorable stories include internal thoughts and dialog that don’t repeat each other but work in unison, ultimately reflecting a more complex individual. I’m talking here about layers, the reasons behind why the characters behave the way they do, why they want what they want, and what unusual circumstance might force them to change their minds or to never do so. For me, this isn’t about alpha characteristics but about what makes the character a unique individual. This is the basis on which to add supernatural powers, talents, and paranormal characteristics.

Second: Just enough details, but not too much. This follows the ‘everything in its own good time’ scenario. Even if the story isn’t a mystery, details should be delivered as needed not as wanted by the reader. Tension and pacing are everything in storytelling. We all have authors who we trust enough to deliver us a great story that we’ll wait until they offer explanations, even if they make us squirm to find out sooner. Sometimes that’s more delicious.

Third: Believable world building. For me, this means we should be able to see, taste, smell, and almost feel what the characters do. Especially if the surroundings or the paranormal aspect is unique (which hopefully it is). That means we see the magic evolve, experience the shape shifting fur or wings, and have a taste for the exotic highs and tedious boredom of an immortal’s life. All contribute to a justifiable suspension of disbelief.

Fourth: Lovemaking for a reason—an expression of loving desire. Lust is entertaining, but sex is different between people who love each other versus people who are just making a fleeting connection. Even if the characters don’t realize it immediately, there should be some discernible change or highlights that a reader will pick up on. Even in paranormal romance, the romance is still the key ingredient. First and foremost the romance needs to be well paced and evolve logically to be believable. All the rest of the story spins because the two main characters have a reason, a well-matched need, to be together.

And finally: A satisfying ending. Duh. But that runs the gamut and, unless we’re writing flash fiction, a little more is sometimes better than a little less. At least in my opinion. This is tying up the loose ends of the romance and the hanging threads for the story. Hanging threads for a series, which are usually obviously classified that way, can be addressed another day—though not forgotten.

You’re probably saying “but those are requirements for any good story.” Yep, they are. So I suppose the only real difference with paranormal/fantasy is a vivid imagination for things outside the realm of reality! 🙂
