While Cindy leaves the attack to the police to investigate while she seeks out the missing cats, a second assault finishes Samantha off. Soon, Cindy’s mixed up in a litter of death, missing cats and the police casting an eye in her direction as a possible suspect. Can Cindy find the missing cats and help pinpoint the murderer, or is she going to end up a victim of her own cat-astrophe?

Cats and a mystery seem to go together so well and American Curls was no exception. I have to admit I do have a weakness for a story centered around animals and especially about people helping them. Despite this one having a few clichés of the genre, I thought it was a fun read.

There was a cast of characters to throw you off track as to the identity of the guilty party. While I did guess who it was, I found myself reading on just to see how the main character figured it out. Despite this story being just twelve pages, the author did a good job developing the characters in the few paragraphs or pages on which they appeared.

The dialogue is natural sounding and the pacing fast. If you’re a fan of a cozy but don’t have time to read a full length novel, this will be a good pick for you.

It’s told in letters that the main character both receives and writes. It’s moving, beautifully written, and even though it’s short I felt as if I knew the main character very well. I felt her pain as she reads the letter from her past love, and also her surprise when she finds that he’s alive and what’s happened to him. There was even a twist at the end.

I highly recommend Damaged Goods for the perfect quick read and will be looking for more stories from this author.

I have to admit I do have a weakness for PI stories and especially ones with some humor thrown in. While it did have some clichés of both PI and vampire stories, overall it’s humor won me over. What’s stranger than a vampire hiring a PI to find out who stole his stash of blood? And why does he need a stash in the first place?  He’s a toothless vampire.

The dialogue was great, lots of witty banter and the pacing fast. It kept me turning the pages and I definitely want to read more stories featuring Richard Dick.

In my book, Moon Over Alcatraz, the main character is Brandy. She loses her baby at birth and falls into a deep depression. Five things I’ve learned from her are:

1. When you’re feeling so low that you cannot imagine things changing or ever getting better, believe in yourself. Know that you’re strong enough to get through anything. It’s all in your attitude.

2. Don’t blame yourself for things that happen that are out of your control. We cannot always explain why something terrible happens to us, like losing your baby. But, as you can see in the movie Forrest Gump when Jenny’s left him and Forrest is so in love with her and wants to marry her, he literally runs across the U.S. and back. During his journey he discovers that “**it happens”. There’s nothing we can do but keep going forward.

3. If someone lets you down (and in Brandy’s case, it’s her husband Weston), know there are others out there who will help you through tough times. Brandy had her closest friend and next-door neighbor, Cecilia, who always gave her good advice and had her back through the thick of it.

4. Stick to your beliefs. They will keep you on track through the worst times of your life. Brandy believes in “kharma” — what goes around, comes around. She always tried to be the best person she could be, and when she messed up, she tried to get back on track and be a better person, learning from her mistakes.

5. First, trust in yourself, then you’ll have the strength to trust in others. Brandy had to find her inner strength in order to extricate herself from a bad marriage. Her high school friend, Edward, helped her see that she could trust him, but that only happened after she started trusting herself.

Women in jeopardy stories are some of my favorites and “woman in trouble” just about sums up the theme of Trust No One. It was full of twists and turns. Just when I thought it was safe for Taylor to trust someone, they turned out to be not so reliable or were somehow involved in the mess her husband appears to be tied up in.

I thought the clues Ms. Bradley planted, especially in the beginning of the book when Taylor decides to take her safety into her own hands, clever and definitely made me think. Was she on the right track or heading for more trouble?

The pacing was perfect for this length of book and the dialogue natural sounding for all the characters. I also thought there was the right mix of dialogue with narration.

The only thing I felt would have drawn me into the story more was a different introduction to Taylor and her relationship with Phil. I was cheering her on but somehow needed to have more of connection with her to amp up the enjoyment of the story. I think had the opening chapter been more of a “get to know Taylor” and a look into her life with Phil, the consequences of what happened to her and what followed would have had more of an emotional effect on me as a reader.

However, I did enjoy Trust No One and if you like mysteries and suspense stories with a female lead character this is a good pick, especially for summer reading.

Just as she gets comfortable, the door bursts open. Rain soaked and bloody, Davis Jackson falls through the doorway. He needs a hospital, but he doesn’t want the cops involved. Danger follows Davis wherever he goes. Kieran won’t tell him her story and Davis won’t tell her his. Together they must fight for their lives during a Class Three Hurricane on Florida’s Gulf coast.

Kieran’s beach getaway is about to take a turn for the mysterious. Relaxing, sun-soaking, and de-stressing were in the plan; a bloody, unexpected visitor during a monsoon…not so much.

Writing a suspense story that keeps you turning the pages isn’t always easy but penning one in only twenty-six pages is even harder. Ms. Moncrief not only kept me in suspense, she pulled me in and carried me from page one to the perfect conclusion. She wasted no time plunging you into the setting, drama, and introducing these two interesting characters. I liked both of them and the constant banter between them which was very realistic. The story unfolded nicely and there were twists and turns I didn’t see coming.

The storm makes this story even more atmospheric and ups the tension level. I really enjoyed the last ten pages and felt like I had to keep reading. It has a satisfying ending and my only complaint…it ended too soon. I would have loved to have seen this story extended into a full length novel.

If you like suspense with just a dash of romance and haven’t got time for a full length mystery, I recommend this one to you. I’ll be looking out for more books by the author and the Moonlight Mystery titles.

I guessed early on the twist in the tale to this story but the connection between Gillian and Sandis was so strong that I kept reading just to see how it would all play out and if they had a happily ever after. The way the author presented the story of these lost lovers was also moving. Toward the end of the story it took a turn I didn’t see coming and which was a nice surprise. Without giving the plot away, let’s just say everything works out for Gillian.

If you like ghosts, lovers that don’t give up on one another, and enjoy stories that tug a little at your heart strings I think Gillian’s Angel might be a good pick for you.

To keep the romance alive in their relationship, they plan a “date” twice a month. Their block of time together includes very few rules—no kids or dogs, but requires an open mind. Frannie and David take turns planning dates, depending on the NFL’s schedule and how the planets are aligned that particular month.

In this second short story in the series, Frannie chooses a hands-on French cooking class as their outing. As they struggle with the “right” way to spice up their lives (both in and out of the kitchen), they discover that their strength as a couple depends on their ability to “wing it.” They also discover that “winging it” with raw oysters, a bottle of wine and an eccentric French cook can make for one interesting date.

Charming…not an adjective I normally use to describe a story but I can’t think of another word that describes it better. It’s a quick read that had me smiling, and sometimes laughing, from first to last word. The two lead characters are fun and very realistic. I enjoyed their interaction with other couples in their French cooking class and their funny banter. I also thought the conversations with the instructor were great, too. It’s got romance, humor, food, and French food no less. A reader couldn’t ask for a better combination.

French Romance is the second book in the Young at Heart series for Ms. Mathison. It was interesting to see her switch genres from mystery to contemporary romance. Her writing is strong and her characters solid.

While the story focuses on an older couple I know readers of any age will enjoy this story. I’m positive, as it did with me, the word charming will spring to mind after you’ve read it. This is one I highly recommend.

The information he attains opens his world to yet more mysteries, and to a long dead romance that may yet be filled with unsettled spirits and passionate longing. But what exactly does Anna Rose want from him? Ah, that is the question.

I can’t say I’ve read too many stories with the combination of romance and horror. I was intrigued to read this one just to see how the author handled it and I wasn’t disappointed. Anna Rose is a nicely told ghost story about old loves and the things we hold dear to us. It’s part history, part ghost story, and part love story all rolled into a quick paced tale.

It’s told in the first person by the new owner of Anna Rose’s house which I think added to the story’s depth and the wonderful description of what the character was seeing, hearing and feeling. It’s very atmospheric which is sometimes hard to get across in a book so “Well done” to Mr. Seate.

If you like a good ghost story but only have fifteen or twenty minutes to spare, I say pick this one up because it’s the perfect quick read.

This book has a little bit of everything:  a mystery, a young girl running from a bad crowd and paranormal elements. And let’s not forget a clever cat. For anyone who knows these animals well, the author did a top notch job incorporating everything feline into the character and story. Despite being seemingly targeted toward a young adult audience, I think all ages will enjoy this story.

Trouble The Cat has two parts and I won’t spoil it by telling you about the second half but let’s just say it had me reading on to find out what happened to Dory and Trouble. The pacing is fast, the dialogue very natural sounding and the second part of the story has lots of action that seems to quicken the pace even more.

I found Trouble The Cat intriguing even if it wasn’t intended for an adult audience. I liked both the human and animal characters and will definitely be looking out for more books featuring this duo. It’s one to put on your must read list if you like paranormal stories and adore cats.
