What I Would Tell a New Writer

There is a lot more to this than just writing a book. This is a time consuming process with a lot of time and energy needed to spend towards getting your book seen and read. I would recommend a marketing plan, using social media to sell, and reviews to increase your visibility.

I think it’s a great idea to start building your book up before you launch it. I wish I had done that, but I was so excited to have my book done I put it out there without much of a plan. I had to learn fast. You have to balance your time everyday because marketing can be very time consuming and if you are writing a second book, it’s difficult to juggle it all.

As a new author you have to be selling yourself all the time. I am constantly on social media doing some form of advertisement for my book. I have to constantly ask myself, why would anyone choose your book over the others out there?

Also, the cover has to draw in the reader and fit the genre. I learned this the hard way. I had a different cover that I had my artist draw up, but was told it wasn’t clearly defining for the genre of historical fiction.

You have to develop a tough skin. Not everyone is going to love your book. I am learning to see criticism as instructors and as helpful to know for my next book.

Moreover, you need reviews, so it’s important to join book clubs and be involved in social media.

Even with all of that, it has been a very rewarding and healing experience. I have grown as a person and a writer. I would do this all over again.

Puerto Rico an island of contradiction, serves as an enchanting backdrop following three generations of women.

Elena: Resilient and ambitious, but trapped by duty to her children.
Maria: Passionate and headstrong, but married to a man she does not love. Josephina: Optimistic and romantic, but in love with an alcoholic.
Isabella: Clairvoyant and spiritual, but denies her heritage and roots.

Like the land these women are held hostage, unfulfilled and unable to find their happiness. Each generation like the land is cursed. Can they defy the powerful bond of the curse and free themselves to find love everlasting?

New Author, Olivia Castillo, like the jibaros of the past weaves a tale of sorrow and joy. Castillos’ fiction is timely, offering a glimpse into the islands rich history and offering insight into the story that has plagued women for all of time, the search for true love and acceptance of self.

Elena
Bayamón, Puerto Rico, May 1937

During those late-night hours, the old fort was deserted, with the exception of a few amorous couples who embraced in dark corners, not caring if they were seen. From the top of El Morro, she would stare out in awe at the vast, black, beautiful sea, waves breaking along the rocks, stars bright above her.

The melody of the coquí kept her company and she promised herself and God that someday she would finish school. The spirit of her grandmother’s Taino ancestors filled her and she felt at peace, knowing that her grandmother was watching over her. One balmy night as she was coming back from one of these walks, she was startled by a low whistle behind her.

Regretting that she had ignored her mother’s warnings about being out so late, she swiftly removed her shoe to use as a weapon. She spun around to see who the culprit was and what she saw left her speechless.

An older, sophisticated man smiled at her, white teeth flashing in the dim Spanish streetlamp. He was impeccably groomed, from his black brilliantine hair and thin, polished mustache down to his shiny black patent-leather shoes. He was dressed in a white suit, with a white fedora cocked down over one eye.

She stood there, dumbfounded. Her experience with men had been limited to her father and a handful of childhood crushes. The man looked her up and down like a cat ready to eat a canary.

Julie gazed around the gymnasium, hoping for a sign of Trevor. During the timeouts, she spied Jason’s blue eyes scanning the stands, searching for his father, too. His broad shoulders and solid frame reminded her of a young Trevor. Her firstborn, a full head taller than most of his teammates, knocked hard on the door to manhood, seemingly overnight.

Trevor was staying away on purpose, she realized, her eyes misting over. His way of getting even because she was leaving on a business trip.

“Hey.” A familiar hand touched Julie’s shoulder, causing an electrifying charge to pulse through her body.

“I was wondering if you were going to show up,” she said with more bitterness than she meant.

She was relieved to see Trevor. She wanted to be near him, touch his face, hold hands like they used to. Instead, she made a snarky comment, driving another wedge between them. Seemed like inflicting hurt and pain became the goal of every conversation they shared recently. Somehow their loving, supportive relationship had turned spiteful and vindictive.

Julie couldn’t put her finger on when things changed, but she knew why. Trevor never understood her need to stand on her own two feet and take pride in something she created. He would never understand how her company gave her a sense of security he never could.

She moved her jacket to make room for him. Instead, he squeezed in between the girls. “Don’t start with me. I work too, you know. I got here as soon as I could.”

“Jason went on a scoring run. He has twelve points, eight from free throws.” Julie allowed her pride to slip out.

“Guess all that time you spent in the driveway teaching him how to draw a foul paid off.”

“Someone has got to be home with our kids,” Trevor said, his words dripping with judgment.

“Nicole, Emily. Go wash that sauce off your hands,” Julie ordered.

“I can just lick them clean,” Emily said.

Nicole stood. “Come on, Em. Let’s go. I think they’re going to fight again and Mom doesn’t want us to hear.”

“We’re not fighting,” Trevor said. “Just go wash your hands like your mother asked.”

She watched the girls head toward the bathrooms.

“They’re right, you know. All we do anymore is argue.”

“Not true. You’re not at home long enough. I can’t believe you have another week-long business trip.”

“I have a commitment to the company and the people who work there,” Julie said in hushed tones. “If you can’t or won’t accept that, then there is nothing I can do to make things better between us.”

It’s All About Me – Carrie Jo Howe’s Photo Journey – Guest Blog and Giveaway

It’s All About Me – Carrie Jo Howe’s Photo Journey
1. I’ve written 2 books.

2. I lived in Chicago, Illinois for 20 years.

3. I have 3 sons.

4. I currently live in Key West, Florida with my husband and dog.

5. I learned that:
Key West is scattered bits of land surrounded by water

In Key West, you can adopt a rooster wearing a diaper (the rooster wears the diaper – not you. Well actually it’s Key West – you can wear a diaper too if you want).

And it’s one human family.

This human chose NOT to wear the diaper.

6. Paddle board yoga is actually fun (after the thousandth time of falling in). It’s very gushy at the bottom of the mangroves.

7. I’m friends with Hemingway – who is a little grabby.

8. I went to Fantasy Fest! (I’m the photographer not the model.)

9. I have a blog about crime in the Keys because I love the criminals here.

And I love the fish crimes here. Here is a picture of the infamous Turtle Bandit.

10. I’m afraid of ghosts. AND, there are billions of ghosts in Key West. I’ve always had the creeps and Robert the Doll is one of the scariest “Chuckies” out there. He’s in the East Martello Tower. He’ll cast a curse on you if you don’t ask permission to take his picture (skin crawling as I write this).

My front porch is painted Haint Blue – so I’m safe. I hope.

Peg Savage has contractually agreed to move to Key West, Florida. The smudged signatures on the damp cocktail napkin are irrefutable proof.

“An adventure…” her husband Clark says.

Peg can’t swim; she’s afraid of bridges (there are 42 of them); and she doesn’t want to leave her friends. However, after a bottle of Cabernet, a move from Chicago to the southernmost city in the United States seems like the best decision ever.

But now Clark has taken a long term job in Cuba and she’s on her own.

Neither her dog Nipper, nor the ghosts in the attic, offer up any good advice. But how hard can it be living in paradise?

Peg dives into island life but the more effort she makes, the wider her wake of catastrophes. She is tortured by a paddle board, a giant poisonous toad, the local Conservation group, and the patron saint of hurricanes. Not to mention the persistent sweat rash under her left breast.

A tropical depression descends on the island – one that can’t be cured with medication. Peg must gather her strength if she has any hope of surviving the storm.

Enjoy an Excerpt:

The next day, when Clark greeted Peg in the kitchen, his face lit up with hungover happiness. Peg held up the still-damp paper towel contract – black ink sticking to her index finger and thumb.

“Yes, here’s the proof.” She dropped the drunken pact into the desk drawer on top of the crusty remains of past contracts that refused to lie flat. She could just make out the blotchy inked words company, job and dog on the corners of the stacked agreements.

“It’ll be fun, an adventure.” Clark kissed her lips, his breath a mixture of mouthwash and sour bar towel. “I’ll make the arrangements. We can get away at the end of the week.”

Peg wished that he would stop saying the word adventure.

About the Author: After raising three boys in the suburbs of Chicago, Carrie Jo Howe now lives in Key West, Florida with her husband and her dog. Her latest novel, Island Life Sentence, is a fictional account of an American Midwestern woman who feels like an alien in the “one human family” of Key West. Carrie Jo’s first book, Motherhood is NOT for Babies, received a rave review (thanks Mom), and works wonderfully as a form of contraception. Her blog Florida Keys Crime Report, tells of all the goings on in the Keys, where bank robbers get away on bicycles, and perps caught with undersized, pinched, out-of-season lobsters get more jail time than drug runners. She is currently working on the sequels to Island Life Sentence.

The Background at The Fortress by Madeleine Romeyer Dherbey

    The Background of The Fortress

First of all, the Vercors Mountains. Breathtakingly beautiful, dangerous, a natural playground for all extreme sport lovers. Rock climbing, canyoning, spelunking, skiing, it’s all there. But for me, it’s home. It’s where my ancestors have lived and are buried, under those same cliffs.

Then, the history. The Vercors is a dream of freedom, a heroic battle, a military disaster, but also redemptive last stand. Many military and history books have been written on the subject, but no fiction accounts, and in fact, I was frustrated by the dryness of the accounts which I felt did not reflect the human dimension of that battle. When Pierre Dalloz and Jean Prévost conceived of the Plan des Montagnards for the Vercors in 1941, France was defeated, its army disbanded, its people divided and demoralized. Yet three years later, a small force was growing beyond the cliff, entrusted by the Allies with a mission to disrupt German movements after Overlord in Normandy and Anvil on the Mediterranean coast. But the dream fell short, with no Mediterranean landing or backup. The paratroopers who did come were German. The small army of the Vercors, the first Maquis of France, its first free republic under Nazi occupation, was abandoned to its fate. For six weeks, they fought with fierce and sometimes desperate courage a force twenty times superior in size, equipment, and training. They were slaughtered, even tortured in the mountain’s sawmills. Hundreds were deported to their death. Yet the survivors regrouped and joined the FFI to continue the fight, eventually joining the liberation armies all the way to Germany.

Finally, my own family history. Three of my uncles were condemned to death for collaborating with the Vichy government and betraying C2, a Resistance camp, to the Nazis. Their sentences were later commuted to forced labor, but the national disgrace verdict stood, and they had to leave the area to avoid being murdered. Despite the death threats, my father— who had fought with honor during the war—decided to stay. The legacy was hard to overcome in a community mauled by four years of occupation and violence, and seventy years later, my last name remains associated with the destruction of the Maquis of Malleval.

And then, there are also small things, like a Sten machine gun I found in the mud of a summer creek, with this inscription, Pour ma Suzon Cherie, June 12, 1944; or the story of a fifteen-year old boy, a resistant fighter whose name is forgotten, who was tortured and murdered by the Nazis in the summer of 1944.

The war has not made much of difference in Alix’s life. Her father has seen to it that she grows up unaware, unworried, but safe in her tiny village under the cliffs of the Vercors. All around her he has built a fortress whose walls are impregnable—until the 27th of April, 1944. That day he makes a stupid mistake up on the cliff, and the walls of the Fortress start crashing down. Reality breaks into Alix’s life with unrelenting violence, unforeseen possibilities. From now on, every decision she makes will mean life or death.

Six weeks before D-Days, a thousand kilometers from the beaches of Normandy.

There are no generals in the French Vercors, just a handful of men and women against the Nazi war machine. They come from Bretagne, Paris, and Slovenia, and the villages up on the cliff. They are the Fortress.

She stopped the horses and turned around, expecting to see her father on top of the log pile. “Papa?” she called. There was no response. Her eyes darted from one place to another. On the wall against the blue sky, behind the cart, down the road, as far as it went along the rock face. “Papa?” she called again. He was there a second ago…right there, he was standing right there…. “Papa,” she cried. “Where are you?” Then she saw Mikko, two paws on the wall, sniffing. And her hands started to shake. “Papa,” she said, but no sound came out. “Papa, come back.”

The Background of Reckless Beginnings by Tina Hogan Grant – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The background of Reckless Beginnings

I had the idea for this book over twenty years ago. For the next fourteen years it mulled around in my head, reminding me once in a while I should get it written but life kept getting in the way and it never happened.

It wasn’t until my father unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack in 2010 and a year later I was diagnosed with breast cancer that I began taking life more seriously and told myself if I want to write this book I’d better get cracking and I did. Fast forward seven years and it’s finally going to be published October 4th of this year.

The book is women’s fiction based on true events. Events that have happened in my life and I know many other women who can relate to the foolish decisions The main Character, Tammy Mellows, (based on myself) had made. Thus the title Reckless Beginnings. But the choices she had chosen only made her stronger and more determined to be rid of the chaos and turmoil in her life and allow normality to return.

Throughout my experiences I’ve met so many other women who like me were living with an addict and were shadowed by the addiction. We had become the silent and forgotten ones. Feeling trapped, afraid and quite frankly at a lost. Change was not an option, it was out of our reach and feared. We soon found ourselves settling. It takes courage to stand up for yourself, face your fears and go after what you really want in life. Having the drive and determination to do something about it is the key.

When my son was born, change became the only option and my book takes you on Tammy’s journey. I wanted to write this book to give women who are in a relationships with an addict and also family members of addicts a voice and make them realize that they don’t have to settle, they have choices.

Tammy Mellows, a fourteen-year-old native of England, was shocked when her father and troubled older sister, Donna, moved to the States.

With her family now separated by divorce and divided by an ocean, Tammy felt helpless when she learned Donna had run away and couldn’t be found.

Thanks to her father insisting she stay behind in England to finish school, Tammy could do nothing for the next three years but pray that Donna would be found safe.

When Tammy’s lifelong dream of moving to the States was finally fulfilled, she had high hopes of looking for Donna. But with no leads and faced with turmoil in her own life, there wasn’t much Tammy could do.

After a forbidden secret love affair and a catastrophic dispute with her father, Tammy eventually meets Steven, settles down and has his child, only to discover he is a heroin addict. Thrown into a life of drugs and violence. Shadowed by his addiction, she becomes the silent and forgotten one. Living in fear of what Steven might be capable of and struggling alone to provide for her young son.

What consequences might she face if she leaves Steven? Is she ever going to find her sister alive? Will she have enough courage to conquer the impossible challenges of her twisted world and still come out on top?

Enjoy an Excerpt

“What do you mean she’s gone, John?”

Who was gone? Tammy wondered.

Her mother became angry. “She can’t just disappear, John! Someone must know where she is!”

Glued to the railings, Tammy was dying to know who and what they were talking about.

Then her mother began to cry hysterically while she held the phone tight and screamed into it, “She’s still a child, John. She’s just seventeen. You should never have put her in that home! She isn’t an object you can just discard because she’s in your way. She’s your daughter!”

Tammy remembered how her heart sank to the floor when she suddenly realized they were talking about Donna. Her sister had run away and was now missing. She wanted to race down the stairs and snatch the phone from her mother’s hands and ask her father WHY? Why had he put her in that awful place?

Donna had written a letter to Tammy and Jenny, telling them how much she hated being in the home. How no one wanted her anymore and she was going to run away. Frightened by what she had read, Tammy showed the letter to their mother. As upset as she was by both the letter and the fact that Donna had written to her sisters and not her, Rose never believed Donna would actually run away. “I’m sure she’ll be okay. She just needs time to adjust. It’s all new to her. We have to trust your father’s judgment. He said this would be good for her. I have to believe that. She is a very troubled young girl and needs help,” her mother had told her. But she had run away, and now no one knew where she was.

About the Author: Tina Hogan Grant was born in England and grew up in a small town on the Yorkshire Moors. She is the youngest daughter of science fiction author, James P. Hogan. After moving to California, she became a commercial lobster fisherwoman, fishing off the coast of Southern California for ten years with her husband Gordon.

For fourteen years, she’d had a notion of writing her debut novel “Reckless Beginnings”. But it wasn’t until the sudden death of her father in 2010 and a battle with breast cancer a year later that she made the decision to get it done. Seven years later, she finally completed it. She is now working on a sequel titled, “Better Endings.”

She currently resides with her husband in the small mountain community of Frazier Park in Southern California. Together they enjoy anything that involves the outdoors, fishing, hiking, kayaking and riding quads.

Determined to die with dignity, a retired neurosurgeon in a senior living facility battles the likelihood he will be the next victim of his family’s history of dementia.

The story is told as it is experienced through the eyes and journal of ROBERT GLICKMAN, who is in his mid-seventies and lives on the independent living floor of what is affectionately referred to as the Fountain of Youth.
Living within the shadow of his family’s dementia, every Sunday Glickman performs a particular “ritual” to monitor and stay ahead of the possibility he will be next and has established a “quick fix” if that becomes likely. In the meantime, he is embroiled in the lives of many of the other residents including his sister ESSIE, who like Glickman has an apartment on the Fountain’s independent living floor. The two siblings share a love-hate relationship, in part because Essie suffers from a narcissistic personality and in part because Glickman doesn’t. In the end it is Essie who needs the “quick fix” before her brother.

There is also HESTER, a server at the Fountain, and her big sister, RUTH WILSON, the front desk clerk. Ruth divulges to Glickman a horrific family secret that caused Hester to stop talking at the age of ten. She suffers from progressive mutism. Shortly after learning about the Wilson family secret, Glickman meets and instantly falls in love with CHRISTINA Abernathy, a retired psychotherapist, and an exceptionally beautiful woman. When they first meet, Glickman is convinced Christina is sleeping with his next-door neighbor BROWNSHER.

Christina agrees to try and help Hester with her mutism and after several therapy sessions Hester seems to be making great strides in her ability to speak simple sentences, that is, until she recognizes the perpetrator of her family secret on television.

While most everyone in the Fountain is Jewish including Glickman, one of his best friends there, BOYLE, is gentile, or so most of the residents believe because he speaks with a slight German accent and because he doesn’t use Yiddish when he curses. Indeed, there are some residents who believe that Boyle is secretly a Nazi, although Glickman has reason to believe he is a Holocaust survivor who refuses to talk about it. But is he really?

Through Boyle, Glickman becomes friendly with Stanley, Boyle’s eighteen-year-old grandson who goes by the name ‘Santini’ in the outside world. During their games of eight-ball in the Billiards room, Glickman learns that Santini is heavily involved in the dark side of the local community but is trying his best to break free. That’s when the FBI enters.

Glickman’s interest in Christina Abernathy, Hester’s mutism, Santini’s confrontation with the FBI, the discovery about Boyles true past, and Essie’s various personality disorders along with other memorable characters make for happy and sad commentaries in Glickman’s journal as he marches into old age knowing he has his finger on the way he plans to depart, and it’s not on the nursing floor two elevator stops down, or Hell as everyone upstairs calls it.
