A New Tradition for Christmas

I’ve talked in the past about my family’s traditions for Christmas. We take supplies to the pet shelters, donate toys to the toy drives and food to the shelter, but last year, we decided to make a new tradition in addition to those.

Ohio is home to the Christmas Story house. Yes, the actual house used in the movie. It’s been restored and fixed so it looks like it did in the movie. To help raise money for the restoration and because it’s fun to run, they’ve organized a 5k run called…the Christmas Story House 5k/10k Run. I know, real original name, but it’s fun. Every year a few actors from the movie show up, a big crowd shows up to run and most everyone dresses up as their favorite characters from the movie. Leg lamps, thieves, pink bunny suits… you name it. They will come.

Photo credit: Korona Lacasse (Run, Santa…RUN!) [CC BY 2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons.

So we’ve decided to do this run. I’ll admit. I’m not a runner. Not a chance. My knees are still shot from when I danced in school. But I’m going to do this. Yep. I’m going to. We’ll donate money to the house, but mostly it’ll be sweating together, dressing up in silly costumes and the fun of being a family.

Do you have a tradition your family does? Something that brings the family together? Maybe something that’s silly? Something serious? Maybe there’s a tradition you’d like to enact. What is it? I’d love to know.

Ian has wanted Olivia from the moment they first met. They shared a torrid one-night-stand in Scotland a year prior and never spoke of it again. Now they are business partners, and Ian has plans to woo Olivia back into his bed permanently.

Eric Thomas is a drummer from the superstar rock band, The Harbingers. When he meets Olivia, he knows there’s something different about her. He wants her – and not just for the night.

But when the two Doms cause a stir with their antics on Pleasure Island as they each attempt to win Olivia, they will be forced to contemplate another means of attaining their prize. Can they convince Olivia to experience the fantasy of a ménage with them? And will what happens on Pleasure Island stay that way?

Publisher’s Note: While this steamy ménage is part of the bestselling Pleasure Island series, it can be read and enjoyed on its own.

Read an excerpt:

One mistake. One teensy error in judgement had changed everything.

The deed that she was trying fervently to forget never should have happened in the first place. But it had. Choices had consequences, even drunken choices. And since Olivia didn’t own a time machine, nothing could change that fact. Once they’d tangled in the sheets together, their friendship evolved—and not for the better.

It didn’t matter that it had been without a doubt the hottest night of her life, or that she’d not known how hot his fires burned. Their lovemaking had scorched the very fabric of her soul. Ian was normally so staid and stoic, which made the night all the more memorable and the walls erected between them since all the more daunting.

The man infuriated her. He’d hurt her—or her heart, anyway. That had been the most unexpected thing, considering Olivia didn’t do feelings and tended to skedaddle once emotions came into play. In her life, love had been used as a weapon. The scars she bore on her soul attested to how insidious the barbs and arrows of emotions could be.

So Ian didn’t want her help. Big surprise there. The difficult man snarled at her for even offering him aid.

Silly. Stupid even of her to try and offer assistance after the past year. Their relationship could be defined as stilted, forced, and foreign, even. Like they were two strangers attempting to divine the other’s moods. Wary beasts wondering when the next loaded barb would pierce their heart.

Regret weighed her down as she ascended the stairs—holding on to the rail as the vessel dipped and swayed—into the blinding sunlight. Slipping her sunglasses into place, shielding her gaze, needing to hide the ache in her chest, she ignored the rest of the passengers as she traipsed across the boat deck. Olivia wasn’t in the mood to be social. There would be enough of that forced on her over the next two weeks, where every moment she would have to pretend she wasn’t hemorrhaging internally from wounds no one saw.

The next two weeks would make or break them.

While Anya never did get that doctorate, she graduated cum laude from the University of Missouri-St. Louis with an M.A. in History.

Anya is a bestselling and award-winning author published in multiple fiction genres. She also writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance under the name Maggie Mae Gallagher. A total geek at her core, when she is not writing, she adores attending the latest comic con or spending time with her family. She currently lives in the Midwest with her two furry felines.

Finally Found by Lucy Felthouse – Spotlight

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Lucy Felthouse who is celebrating the recent release of Finally Found. This story was previously published as part of the Love Unexpected: Sappho Edition anthology.

Natalia has been in love with her best friend Ashleigh for years, ever since they were housemates at university. Unfortunately, circumstances, and then Natalia’s unwillingness to jeopardise their friendship, mean that she has never confessed her feelings, choosing instead to be grateful for the close relationship they do have. However, on a weekend away together, a bottle or two of wine and an erotic book place the girls in a highly charged sexual situation. Will Natalia make a move, or is she too afraid to rock the boat and risk losing Ashleigh altogether?

Natalia smiled as she caught sight of the familiar redhead sitting at a table in the hotel bar. Thankful for the thick carpet masking her footsteps, she walked up behind her friend, ensuring she wouldn’t be seen. Then she slipped her hands over her eyes. “Guess who?”

An excitable squeak, then, “Oh, I don’t know. Is it Scarlett Johansson?”

“Hmm, close, but not quite. Guess again.”

“Oh, shut up you silly cow, and come here.” With that, the redhead stood and turned, throwing her arms around Natalia and pulling her into a tight hug. “Hey, gorgeous. I missed you! How are you?”

“I missed you too, Ashleigh. I’m good, thanks. How about you? You look great.”

Disentangling from their embrace, Ashleigh looked down at her clingy black top and skinny jeans and shrugged. “Thanks. I’m okay, I guess. All the better for seeing you. It’s been forever. Come on, sit down. Let’s get a drink.”

They sat down, and a waiter appeared. Natalia suspected he’d been waiting at a safe distance until they’d finished their enthusiastic greeting.

He smiled. “What can I get you ladies?”

Natalia looked at her watch. “You know what, it’s Saturday and it’s after twelve. I’ll have a glass of white wine, please. Something mid-range and not too dry.”

Ashleigh piped up. “Make it a bottle. Thanks.”

“So,” Natalia said, settling back into the plush armchair, “how was your journey? I always find getting into London a total nightmare, but it’s not so bad once you’re here. The Tube may be sweaty and crowded, but at least it’s fast.”

Ashleigh nodded. “It was all right, actually. The train into the city was on time and not very busy, and, like you say, the Tube is quick and easy. It was pretty stress-free. You?”

“Much the same. I’m just glad we’re finally here. I can’t believe it’s been a year since we’ve seen each other. It’s so easy to forget that when we talk almost every day.”

“I know. I’m sorry. It’s just life gets in the way, doesn’t it? Especially as we live so far apart. And then there was all that stuff with Kayla…” Ashleigh lapsed into silence and dropped her gaze to the table.

Natalia didn’t know how to respond to that, so she just nodded sagely. Kayla had been Ashleigh’s live-in girlfriend, until the discovery of some text messages and emails tipped Ashleigh off that she was being cheated on. Despite all of Kayla’s pleas and declarations of true and undying love, Ashleigh had no intention of being a doormat, so she’d thrown Kayla out, and that was the end of it.

Of course, Natalia had known that Kayla was going to be thrown out before Kayla did. As soon as Ashleigh had found the incriminating missives, she’d gotten straight on the phone to Natalia for advice. And as much as Natalia wanted to tell her friend to get the hell rid of the cheating bitch, she also wanted her to be happy, so instead she’d asked Ashleigh if she thought she was being too hasty.

“Fuck no,” Ashleigh had replied, “as far as I’m concerned, she’s destroyed my trust. Once that happens things are never the same, so it’s not worth it. And if I meant that much to her, she wouldn’t have done it, would she?”

Behind the Scenes at Meghan’s Playhouse by Adriana Kraft – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Adriana Kraft who is celebrating the recent release of April Swings, the third book in the Meghan’s Playhouse series. Two winners will win their choice of Book 1 or Book 2 in the Meghan’s Playhouse Series: Seducing Cat or A Woman for Zachary.

Behind the Scenes at Meghan’s Playhouse

What’s your favorite erotic fantasy? Does it include ménage – maybe a man sandwich, or making love with a woman and a man at the same time? Have you ever kissed a girl?

We started writing our Meghan’s Playhouse series to deliver some of our favorite fantasies for our readers. When we began book 1, we simply planned to write an erotic romp. We knew we wanted a young “sprite,” a bisexual woman full of energy and inventiveness, as the star in our story. We thought of her as a modern-day Aphrodite, bringing other couples together through sharing sex with both partners.

In the beginning, we didn’t give too much thought to her motivation, or to that of the other major players. Characters have a way of taking over, though, and Meg wasn’t satisfied with just being a piece of fluff having hot sex scenes. Each book in the series is its own love story, stirring up emotions even Meg wasn’t prepared for.

The original five-book series was first released in 2009 by a different e-publisher. It’s been unavailable for over four years, and we’re thrilled Extasy Books has contracted to re-release it, completely revised and re-edited. In the meantime, Meg insisted we write one more adventure. The six books are releasing approximately every ten weeks.

Seducing Cat, May, 2017
A Woman for Zachary, August, 2017
April Swings, October, 2017
A Ring for Christmas, December 7, 2017
Vegas Gambler, February 23, 2018
Meg’s Folly, May 4, 2018

April Day deeply loves her husband, Derek, but something’s missing. To heat things up, she books them on a Caribbean cruise for their seventh anniversary. She’s not sure what she’s looking for, but she knows she’s found it as soon as she spots the delectable sprite of an actress who stars in the ship’s daily shows.

Meghan Keenan’s having a blast with her latest squeeze, Clark Hendricks, who writes and directs the shipboard main shows. Should she turn down April’s request to heat up her marriage? And if she accepts, where will Clark fit in?

Derek is stunned by his wife’s brash pursuit of the hot young actress. Must he match her boldness to keep her from leaving him?

“Crap, you haven’t pounded me like this for years,” April panted.

Derek felt her fingers clawing at his back. She hadn’t been a wildcat like this for years, either. He lifted her butt off the bed and continued plowing in and out of her. Her heels pounded his backside.

“I’m coming!” she keened. “Come with me. Do it.”

Her verbal barrage rattled his brain, and then his cock exploded. He worked his wife’s hips back and forth along his length, spurting and filling her like she’d demanded. Breathing heavily, he flexed his arms and settled April on the bed, then leaned over and kissed her forehead. “I didn’t hurt you, did I?” Her giggles confused his muddled thoughts.

“Good grief.” Grinning broadly, she lolled her head from side to side. “Does this look like a woman in pain?”

He shook his head. “Not really. But let’s roll over so I don’t have to worry about crushing you.” He rolled them easily until April beamed down at him.

She licked perspiration from his chin. “So watching me ride Meg’s fingers must’ve been a turn-on after all.”

He gave her a crooked smile. “That, and imagining her howling into the night.” He ran a finger along her nose. “You didn’t do badly in that department, yourself.”

“I hadn’t realized how silent I’d become over the years until Meg quizzed you about me. I could hardly keep my mouth closed in the lounge.”

“I noticed.”

“So are you ready for Meg to get more involved with us?”

He scowled. “Do we have to? Wasn’t this good enough?”

April shook her head. “Who knows what good enough is? Do you really want to turn your back on Meg? Do you really want me to turn my back on her? We may never have this kind of opportunity again. We’re free to try whatever we want here.” She kissed his mouth and dragged her tongue across his lips. “Don’t you at least want to try? For us. Or at least, for me.”

Character Interview – Jacey and Dominic appear in Making Friends and the rest of the Husbands and Wives series, as well as Shared Accommodations.

I’d like to introduce Jacey and Dominic Hess, a happily married couple who enjoy having sex with other happily married couples. I sat down with them to find out why they’ve decided to join the swinger society and what it does to their marriage.

INTERVIEW: You’ve recently moved into a neighbourhood where everyone seems to be a swinger.

JACEY: We had no idea it was like that when we bought the house.

INTERVIEW: And if you had known…?

DOMINIC: Honestly, I can say we weren’t looking for this lifestyle. We have a good, strong marriage.

JACEY: Except for when-

DOMINIC: We’re not talking about that.

INTERVIEW: You have sex with your neighbours. How does that, er, work?

JACEY: It’s pretty easy. Tia has a party at her house about once a month or so. She has rooms set aside for us to use. It’s not like it’s a group thing, although most times there is a threesome or two. There’s about ten of us now, and sometimes Tia invites friends.

DOMINIC: She seems to know a lot of people in the, what do you call it? Swinger set?

INTERVIEW: I have no idea. I’m still blown away that you get to have sex with other people and your marriage seems amazing. Is this like polyamory?

JACEY: Swinging is defined as non-monogamy where a couple enjoys sexual relations outside their otherwise fidelitious relationship. Being polyamorous means having several sexual or romantic relationships at once. The line blurs in our situation. I love Dom, and I care for Mahak and Jackson, but I’m not in a relationship with them. I just have sex with them.

DOMINIC: Don’t forget Colin! And Nathan. And the wives.

INTERVIEW: You get to have sex with all those people?

JACEY: Not all at once!

INTERVIEW: Let’s talk details.

JACEY: I don’t kiss and tell, except with Dominic. He likes to hear about what’s going on. He really likes to hear about it.

DOMINIC: Jacey is much more…social…than I am.

JACEY: That’s funny, because I’m really not that social. I just like to have sex.

INTERVIEW: With other people.

JACEY: And my husband. I think the misunderstanding is that swingers look elsewhere because their own relationship doesn’t provide the necessary excitement. That’s not the case with us. Dominic’s amazing in bed. He keeps me perfectly satisfied.

DOMINIC: Thanks, baby. I think you’re making me blush.

INTERVIEW: Have you ever looked elsewhere, other than the neighbours?

JACEY: We just got back from a weekend at an adults only resort. It was fun. We met some new people.

INTERVIEW: This was a swingers resort?

DOMINIC: It was.

INTERVIEW: Are you looking to increase your friends, then?

JACEY: We’re always looking to make new friends. You interested?

Enjoy an Excerpt from Making Friends, book one of Husbands and Wives series

I wonder what would happen if I picked Dominic’s keys. I could just say I want to have sex with my husband, rather than someone I’ve just met. But I’m here, and there are three attractive men willing and wanting to have sex with me. I have to admit, it’s a huge turn-on. And right now, Jackson and Colin and Mahak are looking at me expectantly, like I’m to make a choice.

I can’t choose.

How can I possibly choose?

Mahak smiles at me, his eyes doing the slow wander down my body, even though he’s sitting beside Melissa. There’s really no choice. If the way he’s looking at me is making the slow pulse between my legs beat insistently, then I want to see what it’s like when he touches me.

I stand up, leaving the safety of Dominic’s side. He gives my hand a squeeze but doesn’t say anything. I wonder if he’s as nervous as I am. I wonder if he’s regretting this whole idea.

I wonder if he’s excited, too?

I do a slow walk to Tia standing in the middle of the room and she smiles appreciatively at me. I’m really doing this. How can I be doing this? And again – why?

Why not?

Tia deliberately pulls out a set of keys with a smile at Mahak. For some reason she wants me to have sex with him. I’m not about to complain.

Mahak wraps his arms around me from behind, nuzzling his face into my neck. His beard is soft and so are his lips as he begins to kiss the sensitive skin. I can feel his tongue against my ear.

“I can’t wait to taste all of you,” he breathes.

Krista Matthews thought nothing could be harder than losing her husband and Master to suicide until the man he’d entrusted her care to left her also. By the time Dr. Dax Hayes returned from an overseas, volunteer medical tour, she thought she was over his deflection and ready to re-immerse herself in the BDSM world she needed and missed so much without his help. One scene proved how wrong she was and after Master Dax’s timely rescue, she agrees to let him tutor her back into the lifestyle. She hadn’t counted on her growing feelings for the strict Dom or his refusal to take her over completely, like she craved.

Dr. Dax Hayes fell for Krista Matthews the minute he looked into her blue eyes and saw the sated, content look she shared with her husband, Dr. Kurt Matthews. He managed to keep his feelings and lust under control until his friend and colleague asked him to join him in gifting Krista with a menage for her birthday. Knowing it was a mistake, but unable to resist, Dax succumbs to the temptation of this one-time scene, never realizing where it would lead. A year later, after sealing his fate with a questionable act, he flees on a guilt trip only to return and discover nothing had changed-he still wanted Krista Matthews with an ache that wouldn’t be assuaged by anyone else.

Unable to resist stepping in when she gets herself in trouble, Dax again gives in to temptation and aids the one woman he can never have back into the lifestyle her submissive nature needed. When a vindictive woman tells Krista the truth, will her feelings be strong enough to forgive him, or did he gamble everything only to lose it all in the end?

DISCLAIMER: This book is intended for adults only. It contains elements of power exchange, BDSM, including explicit sexual scenes and anal play. If any of these offend you, please do not purchase this book.

Voices nearing the surgery room filtered through the swinging doors and one deep baritone sent a shiver of awareness dancing under Krista’s suddenly tight skin. She turned just as Dax pushed through them and her first thought was nothing had changed. He still towered over her, his coal black hair still curled around his ears and nape and those penetrating green eyes set in a tanned, chiseled face could still draw a quick, heated response from her. She wasn’t sure she could lay claim to being female if her heart rate didn’t pick up speed or she didn’t go slightly damp when Dr. Dax Hayes walked into a room.

He left without a word for a year and a half. The reminder helped her to believe that instant response meant nothing nor changed a thing. Inhaling until she couldn’t hold any more air in her lungs, she nodded and managed a small smile of welcome.

“Dr. Hayes. It’s good to have you back again.”

Crap. Krista had been about to congratulate herself on managing a cool, but friendly greeting when he fisted those large hands on his lean hips and cocked his head. His bland, generic reply belied his intense regard that turned the butterflies of unwanted pleasure in her stomach to jitters of long neglected need.

“It’s nice to be back. How have you been, Krista?”

So proper and reserved from a man whose cock she’d had in her mouth. “Good. You?” she returned just as detached, her heart aching for the easy friendship they shared before both he and Kurt deserted her. She felt as lost and alone at this moment of stiff formality as she had at her husband’s funeral.

He stiffened and gazed at her for another silent moment, as if he too found this initial meeting disappointing. “Better, now that I’m stateside again. Let’s just say my tour reinforced how lucky we are as opposed to some parts of the world.” Dax stepped forward, his eyes softening as he said, “Krista, I…”

The resident and nurse entered, and he clamped his mouth shut, yanking his eyes off her with an abruptness that allowed Krista to release her pent-up breath.

About the Author: I live in the Midwest with my husband and our two dogs. I love dogs, enjoy spending time with my daughter, babysitting dogs and kids, reading and working puzzles. We have traveled extensively throughout the states, Canada and just once overseas, but I much prefer being homebody. I worked for a while writing articles for a local magazine but soon found my interest in writing for myself peaking. My first book was strictly spanking erotica, but I slowly evolved to writing erotic romance with a touch of suspense. My favorite genre to read is suspense.

The Theme’s the Thing ~ Keeping It Blue with @MeganSlayer #writing #themes #authorthemes

When I started writing, I was told I needed a theme. Not just a general idea for what I wanted my author overall image to be, but a theme. I know, sounds confusing, doesn’t it? A very wise friend told me as I was setting out, I needed to have something that said, this is Megan Slayer every time someone saw it. Why’d she question my theme? Because back then I had a picture of racing on my blog. The photo was right at the top and to the right. It totally went with my passion, but had only a little to do with my writing because at the time, I’d only written two stories and neither had racing in them. So I set out to create a theme.

I had a few fits and stalls along the way. I knew what I wanted to write–second chance romance. A lot of authors write that. So what made mine different? Back when I started, the heat level was the thing, too. The hotter the better. But heat levels then and now are totally different. What was HAWT back then is hot now. What was ‘oh-my-gosh-scorching-the-page-gonna-melt-the-screen’ hot is now HAWT. Back then, there was dark erotic romance, but not as prevalent as now. So my initial theme of HAWT second chance romance is still viable, but the heat isn’t as hot as I once thought.

I’m still all about my second chance romance. I’ve always had a soft spot for characters who had a rough start in life or whose initial romance didn’t quite work. I want them to have happy endings. Sometimes it’s with the same people and most of the time with new people. When you pick up one of my stories, there will be a second chance romance in it.

But I’ve got another theme I hadn’t planned on. Pretty much from the start of my career as an author, I’ve had blue hair. Why? I wanted something fun to do with my hair and it covered the grays nicely. Plus…it was fun. Still is, to be honest. It’s been brighter at times and more muted at others, but it’s always been blue. Okay, there was that one patch where I had it red for a while… And you know what? People didn’t like it. They wanted the blue back. Craziness, right? Not really. They identified me with the blue hair. That’s you, they’d tell me. When I think of you, I think of Blue. Pretty nice, eh? I love it.

I had thought about a logo, but I’m not sold on one and how do you make a logo concerning blue or second chance romance? I’m not sure.

But I’ll keep plugging along. I’ll stick with the blue hair and the second chance romances. Why? They make my heart happy. The characters demand their happy ending and I’m not going to argue with them. If people think of me and think blue, then that’s great with me, too. I like to have fun. What about you? How do you see me?

Balancing life and writing

To write is a passion, and writing is my life.

My world is very crazy sometimes. I’m an active lawyer, I have many clients, and I have a husband and my dogs who need my attention. I also have friends who need a shoulder, sometimes, or just to spend some laughing together, and I can’t simply stop everything and write. For a long time, I suffered, trying to find a way to balance everything.

As writing is a pleasure for me, my time to dream and live another life, I used to feel guilty whenever I set aside my other responsibilities to write. On the other hand, I used to feel guilty when I was doing other things and was not putting my ideas and my stories down on paper, because I was afraid they would get lost.

Organization helped me. I start to organize my time, determined to have it all. I always kept an agenda for my legal activities, so I decided to start keeping one for my entire life.

I messed up in the beginning because I divided my time between working as a lawyer and writing, and I failed to factor in any “play” time. But then I realized how important it was to maintain my connections with other people who enrich my life. My friends and my personal life are very important to help me build my characters and to have stability to write.

Life is about all sorts of things—work, love, playing, laughing, experimenting new things, and experiencing all these things is what I believe makes me a better writer, one capable of writing about the human soul. A little bit of understanding about the importance of things and bringing some order to the chaos allowed me to become a better writer and to accomplish all the tasks with a happier attitude.

Writing is not about isolation; writing is about living.

When Lara dies at the hands of a Manhattan lawyer during a sex game, his defense attorney, Carl, hires Simone, a psychiatrist, professor and author of books on sexual behavior to help him buttress his argument that Lara’s death was accidental. To help his defense, Carl’s client has written a detailed account of his steamy, year-long relationship with Lara. Carl gives the text to Simone for analysis. While evaluating the presumed killer’s writing, Simone continues to receive psychiatric patients with sexual disorders and unusual fantasies, and to research strange sexual behavior for her next book. Meanwhile, Simone’s clinical partner, friend and research colleague, Edward, is working with the police to capture a serial killer who is torturing and killing women. From hot and unusual sex and interesting psychiatric patients, to the swing houses of New York and Paris, this fast-paced page-turner is a blend of mystery, suspense, humor, romance and erotica.

He seemed shy. She sensed it in his sweet smile, the one only shy people use when they want to be accepted. That was her mistake—she believed in the assurance the shy pass to others that they are gentle, calm, agreeable and pose no risks.

“The question I tried to ask before was what is normal sexuality and what is not?”

The way he spoke showed great interest. He looked her right in the eye while awaiting her response and reaction.

“I think I know where you want to go. Who defines normality? Who has the authority to do it? You don’t have a medical background, do you? You’re apparently unfamiliar with diagnostic standards. Is that correct?”

His little smile said “bingo.” Then he said, “Your diagnosis is right on the money. I’m a lawyer. I really don’t have the slightest idea about diagnostic standards.”

This truly surprised her. A lawyer? At a sexology workshop, she would have expected a psychologist or a therapist or a gay person trying to understand himself. But a lawyer?

“And what brings a lawyer to a sexual disorder workshop?”

“I’m here because I need to build a defense in a case involving sex games that led to a woman’s death. I need to understand the subject better so I can do my job.”

Seven years of her life, down the toilet. Seven years of waiting for Edward to marry her. Seven years of patiently waiting for him to make an honest woman out of her. God, how he and the model he’d been banging must have laughed over her stupidity.

It was absurd, really, how gullible she’d been in their relationship. Most men didn’t want to wait to have a physical relationship, especially not with their intended bride.

Pretty stupid of her, in retrospect.

Lizzie rolled her eyes at herself and her predicament. Deep down, she had known that indisputable fact but she’d ignored the truth because she hadn’t loved Edward. Hell, she hadn’t been certain she even liked him. And he had obviously never cared for her, but had been as stuck as she in a prison of expectation.

She’d toed the line her parents had expected her to walk without overstepping the boundaries they erected. Because of that, she had lived a relatively sheltered life in pursuit of her career as a concert flutist. Even during her time at Julliard, she had been buttoned up with responsibilities and the terrible desire to please her parents, hoping that if she did as they asked of her, they would finally show a measure of warmth towards her.

So when her parents had introduced her to Edward Cunningham III, one of their friend’s sons, it had been the most natural extension in the world to accept his proposal.

Sheltered, secluded, and undeniably obtuse when it came to matters of the heart, Lizzie had caved to their unspoken demands. It was funny now, for when she looked back at how Edward had proposed, it had obviously been another business merger and nothing more.

About the Author:  Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Anya grew up listening to Cardinals baseball and reading anything she could get her hands on. She remembers her mother saying if only she would read the right type of books instead binging her way through the romance aisles at the bookstore, she’d have been a doctor.

Five Musts Every Erotic Romance Should Have by Thea Landen – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Thea Landen will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

5 Musts Every Erotic Romance Should Have

1. Attractive Characters

I don’t mean “attractive” in the physical sense. (Though that can help!) The main characters in a romance need to be appealing; otherwise, why are we rooting for them to get together? Now, that doesn’t mean they should be flawless. That would be boring. But romantic leads need something to draw the reader to them, to make readers invested in reading a romance about them. This can be tricky to achieve, as attractiveness is subjective, but if the character is compelling enough, the reader can overlook things that may not usually be his or her “type”.

2. Sexual Tension

This is a fine line to walk. Get your characters together too soon, and there’s nowhere for the story to go. Drag it out for pages and pages, and your readers will get frustrated. (See also: Every TV show that’s set up a “will they or won’t they?” situation.) There’s no one right answer here, but as long as the sexual tension keeps simmering and there aren’t too many unnecessary roadblocks thrown into the characters’ way, the reader should be happy.

3. Realistic Dialogue

Like #1, this can be awfully subjective. Natural-sounding dialogue can vary depending on the kind of character, the setting, and so on. There are a million different ways to say “I love you and want to be with you”, and some are better than others. What characters say in the bedroom is especially important – you want your readers to be excited, not laughing or rolling their eyes!

4. Safe Sex

This is another component that can be dependent on other factors. For example, if I’m writing futuristic sci-fi, I sort of work under the assumption that any potential unwanted side effects of sex have already been dealt with, because it’s THE FUTURE! Or if I’m writing a scene with an already-committed couple, I don’t spend a lot of time on contraceptives, as it’s implied that they’ve had those discussions before. (Or at least they should have!) But in a contemporary setting, especially when two people are getting together for the first time? Readers appreciate safe sex practices.

5. Happily Ever After

It’s argued that to be considered a “romance”, a story has to end Happily Ever After (or at least Happily For Now). I have mixed feelings on that philosophy, and mileage varies as to what “happy” means, but I’m willing to play by the rules. It makes sense – if you spend thousands of words developing a romance and the characters DON’T get together in the end, readers are likely going to be pissed. If they’re picking up something marketed as a romance, they have a decent idea of how it’s going to end, and they want that ending. After all, it’s the journey, not the destination, that’s the fun part!

A murder mystery weekend goes awry when the guests start dying for real. Veronica is desperate to survive and escape, but can’t deny her growing attraction to Adam, the handsome man staying in the room next door. Can she trust his intentions, or has she wound up in the arms of a cold-blooded killer?

Enjoy an Excerpt

Adam glanced at where Ruth and Laura stood by the stove and lowered his voice. “Putting aside the fact you haven’t ruled me out as a suspect, what’s your read on the others?”

“You mean do I think those two are poisoning the pasta right now?”

He laughed. “I’m curious whether your perceptions are similar to mine or not.”

I pondered his question and cut into a third tomato. “That’s the thing. Nobody stands out to me as having the potential to be a cold-blooded murderer. All the other guests seem like regular, everyday people. People I might run into anywhere and not give it a second thought.”

“I agree.” He peeked over his shoulder again. “So, what about the staff?”

“What, you think Brittany’s ditzy comments are an act and she’s secretly plotting to kill us all?”

A grin spread across his face. “Maybe. She could even actually be French, for all we know.”

I put down the knife and raised an eyebrow. “Are you serious?”

“No.” His smile disappeared, and he resumed chopping the cucumbers. “What about Victor? He seems to know the most about this place and would have the easiest time carrying out his plans. Besides, don’t these stories always end with ‘the butler did it’?”

I shook my head. “I saw his reaction when the lights came back on and Jeremy was dead. He appeared genuinely shocked.”

“Okay. So that leaves the other guests.” Adam moved his cutting board over and opened a bag of pre-cut lettuce. “If you had to guess, who would it be?” The corners of his mouth turned up, and I saw a hint of dimples. “And I promise my feelings won’t be hurt if it’s me.”
