“Shayla?”
For the longest moment Zack’s brain couldn’t process the sight in front of him.
Seven years, ten months and twenty-seven days. That was how long it had been since he’d seen her. That was how long it had been since he’d lived a life without regret.

Fight promoter Zack Grayson is on the prowl for a rising star. As the top recruiter of a prestigious MMA promotion company, he wants to take someone where he will never be able to go again: the top of the professional league. He didn’t expect that someone to be the woman he loved…and left.

Top-ranked MMA amateur fighter Shayla “Shilla the Killa” Tanner built walls around her heart when Zack left her seven years ago—and again when her husband turned violent. Now, seeing Zack is nearly enough to send those walls crumbling. But she can’t risk the exposure of the limelight, and she definitely can’t risk another heartbreak.

As Shayla and Zack grow closer, though, business turns personal. And once their passion unleashes, there’s no going back…

A disturbance near the door draws our attention. Zack is here. How irritating. This was supposed to be my night to get drunk and forget he ever walked back into my life. But chances are he’ll never make it to our table. Already, the crowd is three deep around him with no end in sight, and there are fangirls clinging to him like flies.

Zack’s star power keeps him occupied and away from our table for the next hour. He signs napkins, arms, cheeks, and even the curve of one woman’s ass. Before long, he is steered to the wall bearing the Protein Palace logo to pose for pictures with his fans. I don’t want to watch him, but I do. I’ve never loved anyone the way I loved Zack. I opened myself fully to him. I gave him everything, and he filled me so completely, I never wanted more. Every time I see him, the memories come flooding back. Ten years of happiness destroyed by one night of pain.

“He’s been checking you out,” Doctor Death says, a scowl marring the perfection of his handsome face as he stares at Zack, posing with two eager fangirls.

Zack looks devastatingly gorgeous tonight in his tight, black skull-print T-shirt, stretched deliciously over his muscular chest, and a pair of well-worn jeans, snug in all the right places. From the way the fangirls have latched on to his biceps, I’m not the only one to notice.

“I heard a rumor you had a history together,” Doctor Death continues.

“We’re just friends.”

Zack catches me watching him, and in that second when our gazes connect, I remember every reason why I loved him. The way the gold flecks sparkled in his dark eyes when he was happy, the way he watched over me, his easy laughter, the feel of his body against mine, his lips on my lips, his breath on my skin, his hands—God, the things he could do with his hands—the steady beat of his heart as we lay together making dreams for a future we would never have.

After Zack finishes posing for pictures, Fred “Bulldog” Jenner, a heavyweight fighter from a rival gym and one of Sadist’s fiercest competitors, challenges Zack to an arm wrestle. Such is how fighters entertain themselves when they’re training. No fights in case of injury, no excessive drinking because of calories. But when fighters are pumped, as they usually are at this time of day, they need an outlet, and the Protein Palace has a special table set aside for the occasion.

Zack graciously accepts the challenge. Although he and Bulldog are evenly matched in height—two or three inches over six feet—Bulldog is actively training and must outweigh Zack by at least fifty pounds of solid muscle. Still, Zack clearly hasn’t let himself go as many retired fighters do. There isn’t an inch of fat on his toned body. And God, those biceps…

Not wanting to be left out, I join the crowd around their table. Although this is just for fun, there is more at stake than just a friendly arm wrestle. Zack was a big, big name in the sport, and Bulldog is shooting for the pros. A win over Zack sends a message that Bulldog is the man to beat. Out with the old and in with the new.

My heart thuds in my chest when Bulldog clasps Zack’s hand. Although it makes no sense, I want Zack to win. He started from nothing and worked hard to get to where he is, and no one knows that better than I do. Despite what happened between us, I am a secret Slayer fangirl, too.

Biceps flex. Hands grip. A hum of excitement winds its way through the crowd. Bulldog grunts, and his arm shakes. Sweat beads on his forehead. He shifts in his seat, and his chair scrapes over the tile floor. The air thickens with the primal scent of testosterone. I’m surprised I don’t suddenly grow a beard.

Someone turns up the music, and the Black Keys’ “Everlasting Light” plays through the speakers. Zack’s lips turn up at the corners. He lifts his gaze and smiles at me.

Because this was our song. We had both loved this band with its steady beats, old-time sound, and meaningful lyrics. “Everlasting Light” was the song Zack had strummed on his bass while I practiced at the studio late into the night. It was the song he had asked the band to play when he had danced with me at my grad. It was the song he had sung softly to me after we had made love. And I had believed the lyrics as if they were his words. I had believed he wanted to be my sun in the darkness and my everlasting light. They were the last words I had heard him say. They are the last words I want to hear now.
A sigh escapes my lips, and although there is no possible way he could have heard me over the music or the chant of the crowd, his face tightens, and the gold in his eyes fades to black.

Wham. Bulldog’s hand goes down. Sandy lifts Zack’s arm in a victory salute. The crowd cheers, and people surge forward to congratulate the victor.

“Who’s next?” someone shouts.

The crowd hoots and hollers, and names get bandied about. The noise makes my headache worse, and I turn back to the Redemption corner, looking for Doctor Death. Maybe I will take that ride.

A chair scrapes over the floor. And then a table. People shift to the side as if to give way.

My pulse kicks up a notch, and I know, without being able to see through the crowd, that he’s coming for me.

Kandi Cain inherited her Dr. Doolittle abilities from her grandmother and became a psychic pet detective. To her dismay, she just acquired the power to communicate with the spirit world, but dead people give her the willies.

Just when Kandi thought her life couldn’t get more complicated, the neighbor from hell moved in next door. The nasty guy’s name is Dutch Callaghan. How can someone so gorgeous be such a dick? Kandi could chalk some of it up to his job. Dutch is a Phoenix PD homicide cop.

Kandi’s current case is rescuing a Yorkie from a brutal dog fighting ring. Little does she know her dog napping suspect is involved in a series of brutal murders. Disguised as an elderly nun, Kandi rescues the Yorkie and, in the process, blows the hell out of Dutch’s undercover operation.

Kandi now finds herself a person of interest in her client’s murder and her sexy-as-hell, pain-in-the-butt neighbor is in hot pursuit of the Ninja Nun. Is Dutch about to slap the cuffs on? Only time will tell.

A muscle twitched in Dutch’s jaw. “I checked you out. They say you can talk to the animals. That you’re a regular Doctor Doolittle.”

I cocked a skeptical eyebrow. “Don’t tell me you believe in all that woo-woo stuff?”

“It would explain a lot.”

Holy crap! Was he serious? I gave him pitying smile. “The next thing you’ll be accusing me of is talking to the dead.”

“Can you talk to the dead?” Dutch studied my face intently. “I can take you to the morgue and you can ask Maria who killed her.”

“Very funny,” I replied angrily.

“I will get the truth from you, one way or another.”

I jumped to my feet. “Is that a threat?”

“It’s a promise.” Dutch rose to his full height and pointed at Tinkerbell. “Is that Maria’s dog?”

“No. Tink is my dog.” There was no way in hell I’d let him take her.

“Strange. Maria’s dog looks just like her and I’ve never seen a Yorkie at your house.”

“I just got her from North Phoenix Animal Rescue. I can show you the paperwork.” After I made a quick call to Harry.

“Good. Bring it to the station tomorrow and we’ll continue our conversation. I’ll expect you at eight sharp.” Dutch walked off.

“Hey! I have a client at eight.”

“Reschedule them,” Dutch called over his shoulder.

“And if I don’t?”

“I’ll arrest you.”

I drew a quick, angry breath. “For what, princess?”

Dutch stopped and turned to face me. “Interfering with my investigation and assaulting a police officer.”

“What evidence do you have I’m involved in any of this?”

“My gut.”

I laughed. “Your gut? Maybe you’re just gassy.”

“My gut is never wrong.”

“The only thing that will stand up in court is cold, hard evidence and you don’t have any,” I responded with cutting pleasantness.

“Sweetheart, I always clear my cases. Always. It’s only a matter of time before I slap the cuffs on.”

I made a rude noise. “Princess, you couldn’t find your own butt with both hands.”

“Keep pushing me and you aren’t going to like the consequences.” Dutch’s voice was a low growl.

“Time to go.” Jana grabbed my arm and dragged me away. “Piss him off enough and he’ll make it his mission in life to investigate every aspect of your business. Do you really want that?”

“No. God no.”

About the Author: I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea what a real emergency is. Take this for example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone I took up writing.

Five Happy Place Foods by Sean Michael – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Sean Michael who is visiting with us today to celebrate the release of his book Personal Best.

Thank you to Long and Short Reviews for hosting me today!

So, I like food. I like to eat. Now some things taste better than others. I mean, I like carrots, but they’re mostly just a food, right? But other foods make me happy to eat so here, without further ado, are five of my ‘happy place’ foods.

Five Happy Place Foods

1. Bacon! You can’t go wrong with bacon, can you? As a side, in another food, as a topping, there’s no bad with bacon.

2. Caramel! Like bacon, it’s kind of hard to go wrong. I don’t like it too dark, because then it starts to be bitter, but on its own, as a topping, just let me lick the plate clean.

3. Scallops! I love these seafood critters. So sweet. I especially love them with a beurre blanc to dip into but will totally eat them on their own.

4. Mushrooms! The little white button ones. The smaller the better. I love ‘em when they’re fresh, fresh. They pop between your teeth and are so yum. I love them also cooked in butter with a bit of salt on them. Or in a salad, or in a bowl on their own with some white balsamic vinegar.

5. Steak! Sometimes I just want some red meat. Give me a steak on the grill, cooked to rare and well-seasoned. I especially like the filet mignon because that meat just melts on your tongue and fills your belly so good.

So there are five of my happy place foods. This is in no way a definitive list because I can come up with five more just off the top of my head: brussel sprouts, asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, oatmeal. And then I could keep going. But those five are stand outs at the moment.

When things go wrong, though, can they, and their sports careers, survive the strain?

Emma spun on her heels, opened her mouth, then promptly closed it. All sadness fled in a millisecond.

Leaning against the doorframe, Shep wore only his jeans, no shirt in sight. Oh my fucking God. Dream Shep had nothing on the real thing. Anyone could tell that Shep worked hard for a living. He didn’t seem the type of man that would spend hours in the gym, indicating his job was the reason he was built for hard labor. His wide shoulders, squared chest, gloriously perfect six-pack with deep ridges made for exploring fingers—all of it was mouthwateringly hot.

His voice deepened into a low rumbly tone. “Darlin’, you really need to stop looking at me like that.”

She lifted her gaze to his potent stare. Heat rose to her cheeks. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry.” The side of his mouth curved, like he knew the power he had over her. “I happen to enjoy watching you eye-fuck me, but you’re making it hard for me to be a gentleman.”

Her knees weakened, heart raced. How tempting it was to engulf this fiery passion burning between them, not run from it. And how confusing was that? No more casual sex, wasn’t that what she said? She knew where relationships like that ended up, nowhere good. Yet, her mouth parted, and out came, “What if I don’t want you to be a gentleman?”

Something fierce crossed his expression then, darkening his eyes. He stepped forward, bringing all that strong manly heat in close. He smelled of rain and wood and all that was perfect in this world. He dipped his head, and all she had to do was reach out and touch him. “What exactly do you want from me, Emma?” His lips were right there. His naked flesh, right there. “Do you want me to take control of you and roughly take what’s mine for the night?”

His sexy smile revealed a horrible truth. She nearly melted into the floor. “Oh, dear Lord, I told you about my dream?” Please say no. Please say no.

He lifted his hand, gently dragging his knuckles across her cheek. “Ah, but I happen to like that dream you had and shared with me.” He slid his thumb across her chin, tilting her head up to stare deeply into his gorgeous eyes. “You still haven’t answered me. Do you want me to kiss you slowly, savoring every little bit of your mouth?” His thumb brushed across the plumpest part of her bottom lip. “Or shall I punish you with my kiss, making you regret that you ever turned me down?” The heat of his body sizzled against her as he leaned in closer, his warm breath across her mouth. “Tell me, Emma, shall I tie you up with my ropes like I already have? Do you remember what that felt like? Did you like it, sweetheart?”

His grin was pure sin. “You’re right, I do know that.” He dragged his knuckles over her flushing cheek again, seemingly touching her soul-deep. Her mouth parted, breaths became heavier when he ran the pads of his fingers slowly down her arms, the power he exuded like a wall of strength in front of her. “Tell me, Emma,” he finished.

The words nearly fell out of her mouth. She wanted to experience his brand of passion. She got the feeling if she let go with him, he’d deliver where others had failed. Almost as if he’d take away all the pain, all the confusion, and silence her fears.
Her mouth parted to say, Make me forget it all. The words died in her throat. Her fears were bigger and stronger than her desire. She’d been fooled by one man before. The icy cold reminder still splintered her heart, there and unavoidable. “I can’t,” she said softly.

“You can’t.” There was no disappointment in his voice, only firmness. “Then I can’t.”

He took her hand into the strength of his, and she slowly opened her eyes, her breath catching at the contained power in his expression.

Shep breathed sex and passion, and the danger of him presented itself to her. Causal sex was one thing, but she got the feeling Shep didn’t do causal sex. He was pure emotion, total connection, and all intimacy. He’d wrap her up emotionally and take everything she had, and when he was finished with her, he’d demand more.

With his eyes locked onto hers, he led her from the bedroom. Once in the hallway, he turned to her, leaned in, and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. “Good night, Emma.”

She could finally breathe again. “Good night, Shep.”

Then with that blazing-hot gaze pinning her to where she stood, he shut the bedroom door, leaving her, and all her thoughts, alone in the quiet hallway.

Four Elements Every Erotic Romance Story Needs by V.H. Luis – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Four Elements Every Erotic Romance Story Needs
By: V.H. Luis

1. Chemistry: If the tension between the hero/heroine is missing-in-action then the story will fall flat. The sad truth is we have all read a story lacking in chemistry. Yes, it’s often a well-written story and yet as you flip through the pages something prevents you from loving the story—the chemistry isn’t right.

***One of my favorite romance couples who had chemistry to spare, are Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I know that’s not an erotic romance but I couldn’t resist adding it to the list!

2. Sexual Satisfaction: It’s called Erotic Romance for a reason. Readers especially in recent years want to know what is happening behind closed bedroom doors. If an author is going to show us that aspect of a hero/heroine’s relationship it better be two things: hot-as-hell sexy and emotionally satisfying. You can always tell when a writer phones-in a scene and though that should NEVER happen, it really, really NEVER should happen during a love scene.

***For my recommendation I’m going to go with On Dublin Street by Samantha Young. I think the steamy-scenes in that book were tastefully done and moved along the narrative.

3. Character Development/Depth: Honestly, I think this is a MUST in any story however I’m putting it on a list because I think it’s so integral in an Erotic Romance. As a reader I want to feel vested in the characters and the progress they are making in their relationship. If the steamy scenes are monopolizing the pages and they don’t help develop character growth or story progression, I tend to get nervous.

***A book I think does character development right in the erotic romance category would be Sylvia Day’s Bared to You.

4. Eventual Happily-Ever-After: While I don’t mind cliffhangers, I do think an erotic romance series must have a HEA—I mean seriously, if I’ve read multiple books in a series and I don’t get my HEA I’m liable to never read that author again. Life is brutal enough as is and many readers in general (including myself), read romance as a form of escape. We want to unwind and yes feel our heart race as these two crazy people find their way to happiness. I don’t mind an angst-filled journey, in fact I love that type of read, but I better get my HEA eventually.

***My recommendation would be E.L. James Fifty Shades of Grey, because the cliffhanger in book one had me reaching for book two in record time.

He shattered my defenses, and I was fragile to begin with…

The first time I saw Adam Black, I was between the arms of a criminal, a gun to my throat and even then, I knew I was staring at the most dangerous man in the room.

Maybe it was his confident, cerulean eyes, or the sex appeal radiating from his pores like heat waves on a scorching day, but by proximity alone he made my vision blur and my heart stammer.

The day I was nearly killed in a bank hold-up, I began to live—because of him.

Now, I’m praying for the first time in years, hoping the scars of my past, the secrets I keep, don’t interfere with my future…

Enjoy an Excerpt

I close my eyes and bend my knees—or at least I think I am. I’m finding it hard to breathe, and the room is spinning. I must not be moving fast enough because the next thing I know, the man with the big gun grabs me and shoves the cold tip of the barrel against my neck.

This is how it ends? A pang of regret stabs deep within my belly. I wonder who will feed my cat when I’m gone, and the pathetic nature of that last thought is sobering. I haven’t accomplished much in the last twenty-four years. My eyes begin to water, and my vision clouds.

“Hey, take it easy,” a much calmer voice calls out from behind me.

I try to focus on the deep tenor of this stranger, who to my shock is defying a man with a gun, but my senses aren’t cooperating.

Using me as a shield, my captor spins me and I get a blurry first look at my would-be hero. Through pooling tears, I see he’s dressed in an expensive black suit, a crisp white shirt, and a solid black tie. He has hair the color of dark coffee, and because he defies the order to hug the floor, I notice he’s tall. His sapphire eyes lock on mine, urging me to breathe, and for a split-second I forget I’m in the arms of a lunatic because it’s this stranger’s gaze holding me hostage.

Though his hands are in the air, like everyone else’s, he seems to be humoring the robber rather than obeying him out of fear. And while not armed, his calm demeanor is more threatening than the creep jamming a gun against my throat. It’s as if under the façade of composure something dark and dangerous lingers—the insight makes me tremble.

About the Author:
V.H. Luis is the author of the Black Series, an erotic romance trilogy that follows the love affair of Evelyn Snowe and Adam Black. Her debut book Waking to Black, will be released in 2018, and the subsequent sequels Fading to Black and Surrendering to Black will follow shortly thereafter.

Mia’s Wedding by Lucy Felthouse – Spotlight

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Lucy Felthouse who is celebrating the recent release of the second book in The Heiress’s Harem reverse harem romance series, Mia’s Wedding.

Planning a wedding is stressful enough, and that’s without a harem of gorgeous men to deal with.

Mia Harrington has had a difficult time of it lately—her father’s illness and subsequent death, then finding out she must get married if she is to inherit what’s rightfully hers. Fortunately, she’s tough and resourceful, and has emerged relatively unscathed from this period, as well as finding herself a suitable husband.

However, things are far from simple. Mia might be planning to marry investment banker Elias Pym, but she’s also having a relationship with his best friend, Doctor Alex Cartwright, and is in love with her gardener, Thomas Walker. Add to that broken dates, flashy proposals, a sexy Asian tech billionaire, and a nosey housekeeper, and you’ve got a situation hectic enough to drive even the most capable person to distraction. Can Mia juggle her men, her job, and the wedding arrangements, or is her happily ever after over before it has even begun?

Mia locked up and put the key in her bag, then took Elias’s arm. They walked down the steps and out into the chilly January night to the waiting black cab.

“I’m afraid,” Elias said, once they were settled into the back of the car, “Alex isn’t coming.”

“What do you mean, he’s not coming?” she squeaked.

Elias looked apologetic, but gave a one-shouldered shrug. “There was an emergency at the hospital—as their nearest surgeon, he got called in. Couldn’t very well say no, could he?”

Mia shook her head and sagged back into the seat, her heart sinking to her stomach. “No, of course not. I’m very sorry he won’t be joining us, but although we’re scintillating company, we don’t count as a life or death situation.”

He reached out and squeezed her hand, then kept hold of it. “No, we certainly do not. I hope, though, that I’ll be entertainment enough for you by myself this evening.”

She squeezed his hand back, then leaned over and kissed his cheek, pulling in the scent of his delicious cologne at the same time. “I’m sure you will. Besides, this was part of what you two meant when you were talking about being able to give a woman the attention she deserves between you, wasn’t it? Alex unfortunately can’t make it, but because I’m dating—or whatever the hell we’re calling this—both of you, it means I’m not left high and dry. I’m sure at some point you’ll be the one who has to cancel. These things happen.”

With a smile, Elias said, “They sure do. Though I don’t really get emergencies at work—and if I do, they’re all about which person gets to line their pockets the most, rather than saving lives. But enough of that!” he added brightly, clearly eager to change the sore subject of his chosen career. Though she still didn’t understand why he was so embarrassed about it. And if he hated it so much, why was he still doing it? She wasn’t going to broach that particular topic, though, not tonight. She already had one potentially hairy subject to discuss.

But then how could she, now? How could she talk about the situation with Thomas without Alex present? She stifled a sigh. Fuck it. Looks like it’s going to have to wait.

“So,” she said, “where are we going?”

“You’ll have to wait and see,” he replied with a smirk.

It has been used for centuries for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. levitra australia Super Force is a powerful ED medicine that holds dual solutions, which works amazingly to ease down the impediments of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. She jabbed him in the ribs. “Seriously?”

“Yes, seriously. Patience, woman! We’ll be there in…” he peered out of the window, presumably to check where they were, “in less than ten minutes, traffic permitting.”

“Hmph.” She folded her arms and pouted. “Guess I’ll just have to wait, then.”

“Don’t sulk.” Elias tapped the end of her nose. “We haven’t seen each other in a little while, so I want smiles and laughter, not pouting. Even though I know you’re faking it.”

She gasped. “I never fake it!”

“I should hope not,” he shot back, his grin turning wicked. “My future wife deserves nothing but the best, and that includes orgasms. Real ones.”

Her tummy flip-flopped. Bloody hell, she’d almost forgotten about that. She’d been so focussed on working up to telling Elias and Alex they weren’t the only two men to be sharing her that there hadn’t been much capacity left for thinking about her impending wedding. But then, technically speaking, she wasn’t engaged yet. They’d discussed it and informally agreed to it, but there’d been no proposal, no acceptance, no ring.

There was plenty of time left for all that, though. If she and Elias had to grab a couple of witnesses and go to a registry office at the last minute, it would still count—her father hadn’t specified a type of ceremony, thankfully. But that wasn’t how she wanted to do things, and she suspected Elias wouldn’t be too keen on that idea, either.

“Ooh, your future wife, am I?” she teased, figuring that since the topic of Thomas was off the table, she might as well put the topic of their engagement on the table, instead.

Elias frowned. “Of course you are. I know we haven’t sorted a ring yet, but we still know we’re engaged…”

She shrugged, hoping it appeared more nonchalant to him than she actually felt. “Well, not exactly. We never made it official, did we? More of a loose verbal agreement.”

Elias groaned and screwed up his nose. “When you put it like that, it sounds bloody awful. I know to all intents and purposes it’s a practical arrangement, but I want it to be much more than that, Mia.” He cupped her cheek and brushed his thumb over her skin. “I’ve missed you.”

Warmth bloomed where he touched her, and radiated across her entire face and down her neck. She smiled and placed her hand over his. “I want it to be more, too. And I’ve missed you, as well. It’s been a long month, hasn’t it?”

VISIT WITH KRISTI AHLERS

First off, I wanted to introduce myself and thank you for stopping by today. My name is Kristi Ahlers, I’m a published romance author and if it’s a genre I’ve penned a story in it. I love challenging myself, visiting different time periods, and worlds and feel by doing this my stories are a wee bit more organic.

Not only am I a writer, I’m a voracious reader and love to be introduced to different genre’s and authors. I love books, have always loved books whether it was Eloise, living in her New York hotel, or the teenage angst of Judy Blume books, the mysteries of Nancy Drew, or the sweet teenage love of Fifteen by Beverly Cleary.

This year, I wanted to really stretch my wings between writing my own stories and what I choose to read. As a writer, I have to be really careful what I read while working on my own stuff as I don’t want it to color my prose or even trigger an idea. So if I’m reading romance, I don’t write romance and if I’m reading suspense, I don’t write suspense and so on.

I was given a book (A HUGE BOOK) called 1001 Books to Read Before You Die and I went about marking the stories I’d read (keep in mind I’m a voracious reader) and thought “yeah, I’ve got this, at least five hundred read! Go Me!” Yeah, that wasn’t the case. I realized two things…One, my high school reading requirements were sorely lacking and (my AP English teacher had a way crazy love for the Bard, good ol Shakespeare, and as a result I’ve read everything this guy has penned and then some—yeah, I admit I’m not a huge fan of him but hey, well done him on so many ideas and writing them) many of the books my friends read where on the list but yeah, very few of Shakespeare stuff, and two, the majority of these reads on this list are the classics. So…summer reading goal this year, suck up as many of these stories I can. So far, I’ve managed to read One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Like Water for Chocolate, and A Color Purple. And I’ve loved all of these and they’ve all found a place on my bookshelf for another visit.

What are some books you love to read, and what do you look for in a book? Is it storyline, character development, or setting, or genre? I love to hear what makes a book good for others. And if you have any suggestions, I’m always open to a new treasure to find.

Rescued from the Dungeon: Oubliette

It took a tornado and the near destruction of his home for Jason, a professor of history, to learn that his family had once owned his neighbor David’s family. While repairing the damage from the storm, friendship and more blossom between David, Jason, and Marina, Jason’s submissive wife. Determined to ease Jason’s guilt over his family history, Marina proposes a unique way of putting old ghosts to rest.

Rescued from the Dungeon: Love’s Captive

Victoria Padgett is working the front lines as a nurse during WWI. She has just finished celebrating her first wedding anniversary with her husband and Duke of Willby, Ashton Padgett, in Paris. Together they decide it would be best if she returns to England, open up the ducal estate as a hospital and treat the wounded there where she will be safe and can practice the medicine and sanitary practices she thinks will aide in recovery. She returns to Belgium and the front line to turn in her resignation but while there she is kidnapped and held hostage in a château dungeon by Ashton’s once best friend who thinks Victoria should’ve been his. Will Ashton be able to save his Victoria before war and a madman takes the love of his life from him?

ENJOY AN EXCERPT:

From Love’s Captive:

“Let’s both return to England, Ashton.” She covered her mouth the second the words slipped past. Damning words, words that smacked at the very heart of who her husband was and would continue to be despite her fear. Her selfish request hung like a black cloud between them. “I’m sorry, Ashton, forgive me.”

He pulled her close to his body, to feel his strength and heat. “I love you, my Duchess. A day doesn’t pass where you aren’t in my thoughts. But, I must return. I know you understand this. I’m only sorry I can’t honor your request right now.”

Victoria smiled, tears slipped down her cheeks and she didn’t bother to hide them. What was the point? She hated this war, she hated this impending sense that something was going to go wrong.
“All will be well. I am to be moved back behind the lines. You know that. I’ll be away from the fighting this go around. I will have more leave in July, I’ll come back to England and everything will be as it should.”

They took a cab to the train station. Her train to Belgium wasn’t leaving for another hour or so, so she walked Ashton to his platform. The train was already in place and men in uniform swarmed the cars. Sweethearts embraced and whispered to each other. The cacophony of the station gave her a pounding headache.

“I love you.” Ashton rested his forehead against her own. “I promise I will be careful. I promise I’ll come back to you.”

“Shhh. Don’t make a promise you can’t keep.”

“No matter what happens to me, Tori, I’ll come back to you.”

Mason Stewart is in a pickle. He and his brother are the co-owners of the Black Elkhorn Lodge and Resort. Their dream stands at the precipice of utter ruin because their previous chef embezzled every last dime of savings they had for the lodge. In a last ditch effort to save his business from the brink of annihilation, Mason hires a new chef for their restaurant; sight unseen.

Nothing can prepare him for Emily, the red-haired siren who waltzes into his resort, carting a set of chef knives and demanding to see her new kitchen. She challenges his authority. She inflames his every wicked desire. She is everything he has ever wanted. And he can’t touch her. He’s her boss. And it would be wrong to give in to the incendiary heat between them… wouldn’t it?

Enjoy an Excerpt:
Well, if those numbers didn’t just chafe his ass.

Mason checked and re-checked the account ledgers. He’d been over them more times than any sane person would, but he wanted—needed—to be certain they were correct. The loss they’d sustained three months ago had been substantial. With what was left, they’d be lucky if the Black Elkhorn Lodge and Resort didn’t shut its doors by Christmas.

“Are you sure about the numbers?” Cole asked.

Mason glanced across the expanse of his mahogany wooden desk at his brother. There were lines of tension in his shoulders and tanned features that were so much like their dad’s, including the dark chocolate shade of his hair that he wore past his shoulders and his brown eyes nearly the color of soot. Whereas Mason took more after their mom, with his lighter shade of brown hair and eye color—in a manly way, of course.

His gut twisted. Despair and dread seized him.

Mason detested himself for their current plight: the lodge nearly bankrupt. And it was all his fault.

Before all this, Mason had prided himself on reading other people. He’d been cocky about it. As a Dom, he’d considered his ability to size up a person to be top notch. But their last chef had proven him wrong. His arrogance had cost them. Mason hadn’t seen the fraud and deceit behind the chef’s apron before the no-good piece of trash had embezzled nearly every penny the lodge had.

He could still remember when he’d discovered the theft. The disbelief, the anger. His normal fun-loving personality had vanished overnight. The lodge, the dream their parents had conceptualized and that he and Cole had actualized, had tail-spun out of control. They had gone from having excess capital with savings to spare, to barely limping along and teetering on the brink of collapse.

In the last three months, they’d had to liquidate their investment portfolio just to keep their noses above water. But the costs of running the lodge were considerable. It took capital to make this place run.

“I’m sure. We are well and truly fucked. If we make it until Christmas and are able to pack guests in, maybe we can string things along enough to begin rebuilding,” Mason replied. But word had spread about their legal woes no matter how much damage control they’d tried to do. Without a functioning restaurant on the property, the Black Elkhorn Lodge and Resort had received cancellations in droves. The once prosperous getaway hemorrhaged funds daily.

“Well, with the restaurant currently closed, we’re losing a stream of revenue right there,” Cole said, telling Mason something he already knew. Still, he was glad they were both on the same page.

Frustrated, he slammed the account ledgers shut and irritably ran a hand over his face. The irritation was all self-directed. Mason couldn’t remember the last time he’d genuinely smiled. In the three months since the bottom had been yanked out of their business and a person he’d trusted had robbed them blind, there hadn’t been much reason to smile. When he observed himself in the mirror every morning, he no longer recognized the person in it. The haggard expression and grim line of his mouth. The permanent scowl and self-loathing.

Life, for Mason, had once been a bountiful banquet, and he’d never given it deeper thought than the fun to be had. Now, it was a steaming pile of horse manure. He replied, “I realize that. While you were leading the fishing expedition trip this past week, I contacted Le Cordon Bleu on the west coast for a recommendation. We need a chef running the restaurant if we have any hope of staving off further losses. I figured we need all the help we can get at this point. Not to mention, it could be a potential draw in our advertising to have a fully trained chef from such a reputable institution. As much as we adore her, Tibby can’t handle the load or full responsibility. Not that she’s not capable, but she balances her time here with her daughter’s needs. I can’t make a single mom give me more time than she’s able. Our new chef should arrive today.”

One touch from his lover and this marble will come to life.

Kratos, God of power and strength, has been imprisoned in pure white marble for more than two centuries. His lover can break the spell—if only his lover would find him.

Andy Green knows his ancient artifacts. He spends his days restoring works of art. When the sculpture of Kratos enters his studio, he can’t hide his attraction. Will he be able to free the god or will forces beyond his control destroy everything he’s earned?

“Do you have some … clothing?” Kratos waved his hand in front of Andy. “Something like you have?”

“I’ve got a change of clothes in my car. I don’t know if they’ll fit you, but anything is better than running around nude.”

“Nude can be freeing.” If he had his way, he’d strip the odd clothing from Andy’s body and learn every bit of him.

“Freeing, but it can get you arrested. Public nudity is against the law on campus.” Andy grinned. “Give me a minute or two. My car’s in the back lot.”

“Car?”

“Ah—it’s like a chariot, but without the horses.”

“Interesting.” He had so much to learn. He’d been able to observe some things, but not enough to venture out on his own. Andy would be invaluable, and not just as a guide.

Andy picked up keys. “Stay here. I’ll be right back.” He hurried out of the room, leaving Kratos to his thoughts.

Kratos glanced around the room. The human race evolved so well. Tall windows opened the view to the other rooms in the building. A couple of other statues waited in the room. They weren’t the vessels for imprisoned deities. He touched the face of the female statue. He remembered seeing the work back in Athens. Praxiteles carved Aphrodite well and captured the very essence of her faint smile. He’d been vanguard to sculpt her without clothing. Then again, Aphrodite preferred to spend her time in the nude—usually with one of her many suitors.

He sighed and folded his arms. He missed the other gods and goddesses. What he didn’t miss was the water and the ship. The man who’d rescued him from the depths of the sea didn’t please him and couldn’t free him from the marble. He shuddered at the memory of the man’s hands on his body. Rough touches, fondling his ass while the man grunted and rubbed his own dick on Kratos’s thigh. His stomach churned. Was the rescuer the man who sent him? Couldn’t be. That man had to be dead by now. Then who was his owner? He wanted to think about better things—like Andy. He closed his eyes. A vision of Andy’s bright-blue eyes formed in Kratos’s mind. He could listen to Andy’s voice and moan into his touch.

“You’ve broken the curse.”
