Millionaire bad boy Garrett Gerard craves control, especially in the bedroom, and money buys what he enjoys. His indiscretions have caught up with him, and his father presents an ultimatum–straighten up or lose the chance to be president of the family business. She removed her long coat, tossed it over a chair and strode toward the large window. “Impressive view.”

He kissed her bare shoulder from behind as he held her glass in front of her. “Makes one feel vulnerable and insignificant. Or powerful and in control. What do you feel when you look out?”

She turned, and his arm captured her waist. “Excited.” She raised her glass, giving him a salute before she took a sip.

“Excited about what I’m going to do to you? You don’t even know me and here you are, open to the possibilities.” His hand moved to the back of her head and gripped it tight. His lips inched closer to hers. Champagne-tinged breath whispered across her lips before he said in a low, seductive voice, “I have wicked plans for us this weekend. You wanted edgy, possibly forbidden sex. You’ve come to the right man. I think we’re meant for each other.” His mouth captured hers. The instant heat of his tongue explored its depths and made her lean against him. She gyrated her hips, hoping to torment him the same way he tasted her.

Heterophones and Shibboleths by K.A. Mitchell – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes K.A. Mitchell who is visiting with us today to celebrate the recent release of Bad Behavior, book 5 in her Bad in Baltimore series.

Heterophones and Shibboleths

They should be something from Dr. Suess, but they’re not.

Way back when I was fourteen, I read my mother’s copy of Shanna by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. I loved it. Shanna was a different sort of heroine; she was the one who needed redeeming. She was the flawed character. Most romance heroines were supposed to suffer graciously. Shanna didn’t. She begins the book as Shanna Trahern and is later Shanna Beauchamp. I mention this because of one of my favorite Shanna moments: Someone rudely calls her that “Trahern bitch” behind her back. Shanna overhears and corrects her. “Tis Madam Beauchamp now. Madam Ruark Beauchamp, if you please, or if you don’t please, the Beauchamp bitch.”

I loved that clap back. But at fourteen, I read it wrong. It would have flowed a lot better if I’d known then that Beauchamp was not pronounced Bo-chahmp the way my ninth grade French tried to hear it, but Bee-chum. Now “the Beauchamp bitch” totally rolls off my tongue, mentally at least.

I loved that line and the name stuck in my head. I had a character who was just supposed to be a wealthy party boy getting his best friend Gavin (from Bad Attitude) in trouble. I never expected David Beauchamp to wake up from the coma that adventure put him in. But he did. He was flawed and bratty (even at 34) so I think Shanna would be proud of her literary descendent.

Now when I pick a name, I think about how it will sound in a reader’s head, so I try to make sure I know the correct pronunciation.

There are a lot of surnames out there, especially ones that come from the British Isles where the spelling and the pronunciation don’t match. Wikipedia says they’re heterophones. (Not to be confused with heterophobic, which my character Eli is often accused of being by other characters). Another way names that have a counterintuitive pronunciation come into play is as shibboleths, which in addition to other meanings serves as a way of separating the “in” crowd from the “out” crowd because the cool people pronounce things the “right” way. Shibboleths also distinguish locals vs. non-locals. For example, I know if someone pronounces a nearby town as Colony they’re not from here. We all say ColoNEE in these parts. (Colonie, NY).

So, in honor of David Aiken Beauchamp (and Shanna and Ruark), I thought I’d share five of my other favorite heterophones/shibboleths/counterintuitive surname pronunciations.

St. John

In England, it’s pronounced Sinjun, which is way sexier to say than it looks. I could totally see a hero with it as a first name. David’s uncle is Sinclair (St. Clair) but Uncle Sinclair is kind of a jerk, so that takes the shine off it.

Fotheringay This one is pronounced Fongy. I don’t know if that’s because humans are just too lazy to labor over all those extra letters or because it’s just cooler that way. I always think of Bertie Wooster talking about his friend Cyril Fotheringay-Phipps. That’s a mouthful.

Cockburn

Okay, I can totally see why if this was your last name you’d have to tell everyone it was really pronounced Co-burn. Can you imagine how many people react to someone with this name by smirking and saying, “You should see a doctor for that”?

Pepys

Needing medicine for erectile dysfunction already makes a husband feel like less than a man, adding to this the possible loss of a job that pays decent sums generic viagra line http://www.aimhousepatong.com/gallery.html and better growth prospects. Other men were http://aimhousepatong.com/item4864.html generic cialis on line only when they wanted to have sex. You can also confirm the legality and reputation of the pharmacy by going to online forums and discount viagra india reading their reviews. The stomach and the colon viagra purchase online are given a lot of attention the last few years. Since there’s a famous guy with this name, I’ve seen it a lot. Unfortunately, it’s not very peppy, or even like Pepe Le Pew. It’s pronounced Peeps. I would have gone with Peppys. More fun.

I saved my favorite for last. I used to work a job that required me to write names on ever smaller forms for a sporting event. I dreaded seeing this one. I have no idea how this weird heterophone happened. Maybe someone’s grandfather was just messing around and it stuck. Ready?

Featherstonehaugh (try writing that legibly on a centimeter-long line)

How do you pronounce this 17-letter appellation?
Fanshaw. Seriously? All that for Fanshaw?

As a writer, I collect names. I can never tell when one will inspire a character or finally give a name to a character who desperately needs just the right one. Still I think I’ll pass on these. Except for St. John, because that still sounds sexy to me.

You can see what happens to David Beauchamp (better known as Beach) and Toluaotai Fonoti (better known as Tai—and there’s a story there too!) in Bad Behavior. Now available.

In a lifetime of yes, no is the sexiest word he’s ever heard.

After one too many misunderstandings with the law, wealthy and spoiled David Beauchamp finds himself chained to the city by the GPS and alcohol sensor strapped to his ankle. Awaiting trial, cut off from usual forms of entertainment, he goes looking for a good time—and winds up with his hands full, in more ways than one. The situation only gets more complicated when he’s summoned for a random drug test and comes face-to-face with the dominant man who took him for one hell of a ride the night before.

Probation Officer Tai Fonoti is used to handling other people’s problems, but he’s horrified when one of the extra clients his boss dumps on him is the sweet piece of ass he screwed the night before. It makes getting a urine sample a pretty loaded situation. Tai’s unique brand of discipline has Beach craving more. But while Tai relishes laying down the law in the bedroom, the letter of the law stands between them and kinkily ever after….

About the Author:K.A. Mitchell discovered the magic of writing at an early age when she learned that a carefully crayoned note of apology sent to the kitchen in a toy truck would earn her a reprieve from banishment to her room. Her career as a spin-control artist was cut short when her family moved to a two-story house and her trucks would not roll safely down the stairs. Around the same time, she decided that Ken and G.I. Joe made a much cuter couple than Ken and Barbie and was perplexed when invitations to play Barbie dropped off. She never stopped making stuff up, though, and was thrilled to find out that people would pay her to do it. Although the men in her stories usually carry more emotional baggage than even LAX can lose in a year, she guarantees they always find their sexy way to a happy ending.

K.A. loves to hear from her readers. You can email her at ka@kamitchell.com. She is often found talking about her imaginary friends on Twitter @ka_mitchell.

Top Rodeos IMHO by BA Tortuga – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes BA Tortuga who is celebrating the recent release of Rainbow Rodeo.

Top Rodeos IMHO

Hey y’all. I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and lover of all things rodeo.

Since I’ve started my new series, Rainbow Rodeo, I’ve been doing a lot of remembering all the rodeos I love best. I managed to whittle them down to five.

Cheyenne Frontier Days – it’s not called the granddaddy of them all for nothin’. I love the tradition, the music, the parade, the pancake breakfast…

Denver Stockshow and Rodeo – lord, the stories my girl and I could tell… from longhorns in coats to crazy escaping chickens to rodeo clowns coming onto us…

Austin Star of Texas rodeo – I’ve been to this rodeo 100 times and I’ve loved it every time. It’s my hometown rodeo. Hell, I even went to the Rodeo Gala once…

Houston Rodeo – This will always be the rodeo where George Strait almost shook my hand…

Rodeo de Santa Fe – this is the most famous teeny tiny rodeo I’ve ever been to.

Much love, y’all.

Tank is hurting from some tough injuries and ready for a lighter workload. He’s also ready to admit Dalton is an adult now, one he wants to get to know much better. While Dalton’s past makes him suspicious of Tank’s attention, he can’t stay standoffish for long… not with Tank.

The new romance burns hot, but problems inside and outside the arena threaten what Tank and Dalton might have together.

Top Five Favorite Books in My Genre by Michaela Grey – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Michaela Grey who is visiting with us today to celebrate the recent release of Broken Rules, the second book in her Mended Hearts series.

Top Five Favorite Books in My Genre

Favorite books of your genre: Oh, here we go. Y’all ready for this?

Five— Bone Rider by J. Fally. Sort of a M/M/M romance, except the third is technically genderless and also lives inside one of the other two leads. This book absolutely delighted me. Descriptions, prose, banter, it was all fun and sexy and fascinating.

Four— Robby Riverton, Mail Order Bride by Eli Easton. This is outside my usual read, and I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The prose was light and witty, the descriptions (of people and landscapes alike) beautiful, and the whole thing sucked me in.

Three— Loose Cannon by Sidney Bell. This is the second in a series, but it has to go on this list. This is the kind of BDSM I love to read. This book is my happy place, because of the tender, consensual kink, the communication in and out of bed, and the beautifully complex characters. It’s also the book that introduced me to Sidney Bell, and I’ve since devoured everything she’s written. I promise she won’t disappoint.

Two— Empty Net by Avon Gale. This book. THIS BOOK. It features two of my favorite character tropes: the smart-mouthed one who hides his pain behind snark and the rude one who hides his pain behind being, well… horrible. Watching Isaac fall in love with Laurent was an absolute delight, and the way he learned to help Laurent through his issues but didn’t try to solve them on his own was even better. I’ve also read everything of Ms. Gale’s, and she outdid herself with this one.

One— Invitation to the Blues by Roan Parrish. I’m honestly not even sure I can encapsulate why and how this book means so much to me. As a queer, neurodivergent artist with food issues who’s struggled with suicidal ideation and severe depression, it resonated within me to an almost uncomfortable degree at times. But even when I was crying because Ms. Parrish had once again peeled a layer off my soul, I was still reading. Jude was me, mentally and emotionally, and watching him find love despite feeling ugly, weird, antisocial and unfriendly was like being told that it can happen for me too. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I come back to Jude and Fallon.

2 The Shining by Stephen King. Talk about the ultimate haunted house. This book still makes me cry, every time.

3 The Dark Half by Dean Koontz. Demons in a school locker. That’s really all you need to know. Demons in a school locker!

4 Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. I love the slow, steady pacing of this book. It’s amazing because by the end you just can’t breathe. 😉

5 Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. This book scares me and makes me all soft and nostalgic at the same time.

Much love, y’all.

“Hello, beautiful,” said a husky male voice.

Her head snapped up to see the stranger from the airport.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, pulling the sketchbook to her chest.

“I was about to ask you the same thing.” He slipped closer. “What are you drawing?” He craned his neck but couldn’t see anything.

“Nothing.” She closed the book with a snap, but her cheeks turned pink, making him even more curious about what she’d been drawing.

Then a memory nudged his brain. “You’re the artist commissioned to do the mural at the hospital.” He shook his head, trying to reconcile her with the woman at the airport.

“Yes.” Her chin came up, and he couldn’t help but grin. She was defensive about her work for some reason. No worries; he thought it was great. But part of him wanted to haul her into his arms and kiss her again. Instead, he followed a saner choice and sat down on the grass across from her.

She wiggled an inch or two away, then her gaze met his. She was wary of him, but he caught a hint of curiosity in her gaze.

“I’m Catherine Taylor.” She held a hand out to him.

“Malik.” He grasped her hand, lowered his head, and caressed her knuckles with his lips. A slight shiver moved through her body and transferred to him. So she was affected by him. Good. He squeezed her fingers.

Greetings! I want to thank Long and Short Reviews and your readers for the opportunity to share a little bit about me, China and my new release The Temple of Heaven. To celebrate I’ll be doing a giveaway across my blog tour: 3 e-books of The Great Wall, 5 e-books of Finally Fallen, and a $20 gift card to Dreamspinner. (Details about the giveaway are below.)

I lived in Suzhou China for almost six years. My time there was filled with incredible wonderful experiences and I adored so many of the people I met. But I also know there’s no place like home. (For me, that’s the USA).

When we first moved there (2006) Suzhou wasn’t connected to Shanghai by the highway or train so it took about 2.5 hours to get there. Suzhou had yet to be named an AAAA tourist destination which it was in 2009ish. AAAA means the government poured money into Suzhou for infrastructure, growth, and beautification.

Though Suzhou was plenty incredible before the government attention. After all, eighteen of the Emperors Gardeners retired to Suzhou and designed their own gardens there which are for everyone to enjoy. Chinese gardens are like stepping into a watercolor. The gardeners understood the art of landscaping. Suzhou was nicknamed the Venice of the East because of all the canals that run through the city.

Although as much as I can gush about China, I will admit everything was different. Sometimes only a little different and that allowed my expectations rise which gave me confidence in dealing with something effectively—only to crash and burn trying to do the simplest things. I got used to not ever getting quite what I wanted. Compromise and settling for almost were my mantra.

Things I didn’t expect:

*When I saw the exhibit on Suzhou China in SF’s Asian Museum (2004) and I said “I wish we lived there” I didn’t realize I was casting a spell. We moved there in 2006.

*In 2006 I couldn’t buy meat in Suzhou because it traveled from the port of Shanghai on unrefrigerated trucks, in super-hot humid Suzhou temperatures and after our third bout of food poisoning (NOT CAUSED BY MY COOKING) we ate in restaurants until the Japanese market came to Suzhou allowing me or my love to prepare meals at home.

*Restaurants were delicious, reasonably priced and they had access to refrigerated meat.

*Pizza Hut, McDonalds, Burger King, Starbucks, and KFC were everywhere in China.

*No bills. You have to go pay for water, gas, and electricity BEFORE you use it. Since we were the first expats at his company no one thought to tell us this fact because that’s what they’d always known. No idea the bills came after the fact in America. Well, I figured out you had to prepay when the water just stopped working one day… during a shower.

*China was a completely cash system in 2006 (especially in Suzhou). No checks, bank cards or credit charges. I carried stacks of cash especially for everything. (That thankfully changed over the six years we lived there).

*LGBTQIA doesn’t exist. My friends told me there is no gay in China. (Now statistically we know that’s impossible and the fact that I knew several people who liked people of the same sex didn’t change anyone’s mind.) The closet is extremely deep. It took my 5.5 years to find the rainbow club and there was only one in Suzhou.

*I was nicknamed Ling Long Laura > I lived at the end of Ling Long Street and my first name is Laura.

*My massage therapist worked some magic on my carpal tunnel scar tissue and stunned the surgeon. “I can see the scar but there’s no hardness… what did you do?” LOL I would get massages 2-3x a week.

*I LOVE a good sale and I found I was damned good at bargaining. (One of my local friends would have me buy his white tea because I could get a better price in the tea market than he could.)

Top 5 Unique Experiences I had while living in China

1) Being Center of Attention

Usually I happily fade into the background. In China my blonde hair, pale skin, and my blue eyes made that impossible. I became a curiosity people wanted to see… and touch. I started taking pictures of people taking pictures of me.

2) Travel: We were able to travel to Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, South Korea, Tibet, and varies places in China > that I never dreamed of getting to visit… but if you’re almost already there >> WHY NOT?

3) Massages: Having a lovely man named Guy Chuang walked on my back 2-3 times a week. (BTW here’s some TMI when someone walks on my ass I giggle… just saying I find it hysterical) When we first moved to Suzhou massages were $8/hour.

4) I had a housekeeper. I didn’t want one but I was basically told this woman couldn’t be reunited with her son if she didn’t have a second job… I gave her a job but with my obsessive need to clean I didn’t give her much work LOL.

5) Taking art lessons from an art professor. She spoke no English and I spoke only a little Chinese. At times, my teacher would hand over hand show me what she wanted me to do. My friend (& driver) had studied art when he was younger so he joined me at the end of each lesson so she could talk to me directly about my work. (Psst, in The Temple of Heaven Jordon takes a couple art lessons too but he’s more determined than I was to set his own boundaries. I just went along with what the teacher wanted me to do.)

Music is Tian Di’s life and his love, and he’s made plenty of sacrifices. His career is finally taking off with his band, Made in China, and he’ll continue to put music first… until he meets Jordon. Then insta- lust becomes insta-love and a commitment to the future—no matter how difficult it might be.

Jordon lives in a bubble constructed by his overprotective older brothers, who are so controlling that they’ve kept him from dating. A talented artist, Jordon managed to keep his success with a Japanese manga publisher a secret from his family, but now he fears discovery. It’s easier to let his brothers handle everything, but Jordon has reached his limit. He’s ready to draw some boundaries so he can be his own man and face all the challenges that come with that.

Their families and careers aren’t the only obstacles. Jordon must accept his identity as a gay man who doesn’t top or bottom. Fortunately, Tian Di—and his special talents—help Jordon open up to his sexuality in an erotic adventure that spans Japan and China, and with love, luck, hard work, and open minds, will end in a happily ever after.

Many hugs, Z.

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this,” Mia whispered.

Peering at the craggy mountains, she shifted her vehicle into park and killed the engine. She gawked at the main building of the Black Elkhorn Lodge and Resort, although resort was a term she would use lightly. It was the furthest thing from a resort Mia had ever viewed. Not that she’d vacationed at a plethora of them in her lifetime but at the few she had visited, there had been pools with sexy bartenders ready to refill your beverage, not miles upon miles of untamed wilderness to behold and brave.

Whereas… this?

Mia was about as out of her element as a whale on dry land. What did she actually know about the great outdoors? Nothing. She wasn’t a survivalist or outdoor enthusiast. The closest she’d come in the last few years to the great outdoors was a walk in the park near her apartment. But here, slate gray spears of rock touched the vast blue sky, almost competing with one another in height and savage beauty. Mountain slopes were blanketed with dense forests of pine and evergreen. The mountains surrounded the resort property, which was nestled inside a lush valley with tall grass and rolling fields. The chestnut-colored log cabins were charming, with a rustic appeal, and blended with the land of rugged outdoors.

Mia was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, a breathtakingly beautiful land that filled her with hope and was absolutely terrifying—all at the same time. Fear of the unknown, of being lost, abandoned and alone in the wilderness hummed in her system, right in step with the inherent desire to explore the world around her. She understood she was in a panic-inducing conundrum.

Kind of like the rest of her life.
