Hi everyone! Thanks so much for welcoming me to the Long and Short Review blog for a little teaser of the newest “Plummet” story, Hawai’i Five Uh-oh.

My Plummet to Soar books are a series of affiliated books–super loosely based around Plummet To Soar, a fictional self-help book written by Mackenzie Detweiler. (The man from book one, who fell from a tourist helicopter and lived to tell the tale.)

Each of the books features some person touched by reading Plummet to Soar, whose life has changed because they were forced to rethink what they have and what they truly want.

Today, I thought I’d share five things you might not know about my totally eighties life, beginning with:

1. Stevie Nicks. Seriously. Is there a woman my age who doesn’t love Stevie? Who didn’t try to dress like her. Wear their hair like hers. I get now why the raspy, throaty voice gave me shivers to my toes, but even back in the day I would have called it a major girl crush. I saw Fleetwood Mac in concert, and also caught Stevie Nick’s solo tour. A lot of those songs were thoughtful. The lyrics were poetry. The music, compelling. I was in a California Fish Grill restaurant, just this morning, with the radio tuned to some kind of everything eighties station, and they played “Stop Dragging My Heart Around,” Stevie’s duet with Tom Petty. I told my husband I resented the implication that the healthy diners where we live are all our age – between close to and well past retirement, but it is what it is. Outside, there was a meetup of folks with classic cars, and inside, most of the diners were old enough to have purchased those songs as LPs or 45s.

2. MTV. You know what? A lot of people dug watching music videos back in the day. Everyone still makes them. I watched about a month and a half’s worth of MTV on the Z channel in the early eighties, but honestly? I was never a fan. Unlike listening to music in the background, they were designed to totally engage me. As a child of the sixties, I’d been trained to give a television my full attention, but it was obvious early on that music videos were only commercials and there was no there there. I found them insufferably boring. After the first time, I was done. A few good ones stick out in my mind: “Take On Me”, of course. Anything by Michael Jackson, but “Thriller”, especially. “Hot for Teacher”, by Van Halen because I hadn’t planted my feminist flag yet. Now, the only videos I watch have Beyoncé in them… I’d be embarrassed to say how many times I’ve watched “Lemonade,” all the way through.

3. Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons. I’ve always struggled with my weight, so these two are a natural. Between sparkly headbands, dolphin shorts, leg warmers, and high-cut leotards, I ate it all up. I worked out to their videos, got the stretchy bands and pulleys, and even purchased one of Jane Fonda’s manual treadmills, which turned out to be awesome, actually, something I used for years, and not only for fitness. Once, when my daughter had an elementary school project on statistics and probability, she devised a test where we elevated the machine and one of her brothers ran on it, while another threw buttered toast on the track, and a third recorded the results as each piece fell off the end: Whether it landed face up, or face down. What a terrific, creative way to use that equipment–and yes, it was a statistical dead heat. #Mythbusted

4. Marriage. A pretty girl named Diana got married to a prince in the eighties and then totally dominated the world of style until she passed, tragically young. I had my collection of Di hats until we moved a couple months ago. I know they’ll come back, so hit the thrift stores. They’re out there somewhere. You’re welcome.

5. Sexism. I worked as a computer programmer, which started out to be a really promising place for women in technology. My friend Joanne wrote one of the very first home computer video games. She was even written up in magazines! But programming and gaming became a boy’s club for the most part and women were getting 2/3 of what men earned. Let’s be honest, I don’t miss that part of the eighties at all.

But you know what? Now is such a good time to be alive. It’s the best time ever to be a writer. All the world’s information, art, literature, and news is yours for the push of a button! Sure, you have to be discerning and it’s easy to get confused by misinformation, but would you really rather live before the information age? I sure wouldn’t!

Tell me about your eighties life (or your twenties, whenever they happened.)

Best wishes for a wonderful, drama-free holiday season!

About the Author: Z. A. Maxfield started writing in 2007 on a dare from her children and never looked back. Pathologically disorganized, and perennially optimistic, she writes as much as she can, reads as much as she dares, and enjoys her time with family and friends. Three things reverberate throughout all her stories: Unconditional love, redemption, and the belief that miracles happen when we least expect them.

If anyone asks her how a wife and mother of four can find time for a writing career, she’ll answer, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you give up housework.”

“What if this guy could love you? What if he’s not like Harry? You passed him by.” Kelly turned Danya around. “You had the balls to speak to him and have a dance. Harness those balls and give this guy a shot.”

“Mason,” she mumbled. His name sounded good on her lips. He looked like a Mason. He also struck her as exotic but approachable.

“Who?”

“His name is Mason.” She’d spoken to him when she’d thought she had no chance. Before she could cross the room, he and Michelle joined her and Kelly.

Michelle grinned. She leaned into him and tipped her chin. Danya suppressed a groan. The woman didn’t have to be so smug. She’d been friends with Michelle since the third grade, and Michelle never ceased to remind Danya she was the top dog. Danya was the designated unpretty friend.

“Ladies, this is Mason,” Michelle said. “He’s new-ish in town.”

Kelly rested her hands on her hips. “Michelle, aren’t you supposed to be meeting Craig here tonight?”

“We split,” Michelle snapped. “I want to introduce you to Mason.” She turned to him. “You’ve met Danya, and this is Kelly. She’s married.”

“Or she just enjoys sporting big-ass diamonds to ward off approaching men,” Danya muttered.

Kelly snorted. “Justin will love that when I tell him. He spent two grand on a diamond that’s just there to ward off men. Nice.” She stuck out her right hand to Mason. “It’s nice to meet you.” She turned back to Michelle. “Craig texted me and said he’s on his way.”

“Kelly.” Michelle glared at her. “A word?”

Danya stifled a chuckle. Kelly always knew when to stand up to bullies. While Kelly and Michelle went outside to discuss Kelly’s comments, Mason remained with Danya.

“She’s pissed,” Mason said.

“That’s nothing. You’ve never seen her when she’s truly upset. Hell hath no fury like a Michelle annoyed.” Danya shrugged. “She thinks all men are at her disposal.”

“Then it’s a good thing she’s got a boyfriend—I think. I kind of feel bad for him.” Mason bumped shoulders with her. “Makes asking you out a lot easier, though. I meant what I said, and I liked our dance. Want to dance again?” He didn’t give her a chance to argue. He tugged her to the dance floor a second time. “Nice dodge, though.” He half-grinned. “I’d think you were trying to palm me off.”

“No.” Oh God. Ignoring her hadn’t been his intention. “I not good at palming anyone off or having much courage, but if I were at my job, I’d be able to say what I needed to say without a problem. When I’m in the wild, I’m horrible.”

“Try it.” Zelus nodded. “It’s not hard stuff. Just wine from Olympus.”

Oh Jesus. He’d heard this line of bullshit before. His friends wanted to sell their story about Olympus, but he wasn’t buying. He refused to drink. “If I down that, I might believe you and there’s no way that’s happening.”

Kay shrugged. “It’ll make you feel better.”

“To know you’re lying or to get drunk?” Charlie asked. “Olympus, Gods, statues … it’s not right to dick with people.”

Bia took a swig. “I get it.” She stayed beside him. “You think things are one way, then they go sideways. We keep trying to convince you to believe us, but we don’t show you what’s real.” She rested her head on his shoulder. “You’re right to be concerned.”

“Yeah.” He didn’t understand, but she seemed to care. He took the flask. Maybe drinking would help. He’d forget his problems for a while. Sure, the issues would still be there, but he’d have a respite. He tipped his head back and the sweet liquid slid down his throat. The drink reminded him of apples, but with spice. Not cider, though. His mouth chilled, but the liquid warmed his soul. His head swam. “I should stop.” He downed another swig. “Really.” But he wanted more.

“Then stop.” Kay took the flask. “Feel better?”

“Not really.” He leaned back against the foot of the statue. If he wasn’t mistaken, her foot felt warm. Real. Not possible. This had to be a figment of his imagination or a result of the drink. His mind was playing tricks on him. But why was he so horny all the sudden? Booze never made him want to hump everything in sight.

“Let’s get you home.” Zelus offered his arm. “Come on.”

“No.” He shook his head and blinked. “Did you drug me?”

“It’s the nectar of the gods.” Camden laughed. “Not drugs. Good, though, isn’t it?”

“It’s wine.” Andy helped Zelus hoist Charlie to his feet. “The wine amplifies your heart’s desire. You’re not drunk, I promise.”

He allowed them to help him to stand, but he shook his head. Life seemed to slow down. He blinked again. The horniness increased. He wriggled free from the guys. Neither could help him with his suddenly overactive libido. All six individuals were taken and none of them turned him on. “I don’t get it. There’s something wrong with me. I can’t find anyone to love me.” Why was he telling them this? He whooped, then faced the statue. “I bet I can’t even turn this statue on.” He hopped onto the base of the sculpture, standing nose to nose with the woman. “See?” He kissed her. “Think you can love me, baby? I’ll fuck you senseless, but I want to wear your clothes and have you fuck me, too. Isn’t that messed up?” He kissed the statue again. “See?” He glanced back at his friends. “She isn’t interested. No one is.” Oh well. Love, even with a statue wasn’t in his future. Such was life…

I picked up the chamberstick and paused in the halcyon room. The grin in the peeled paint of the flagstones seemed an assurance of victory, and now the grin was my own. Smiling wide, I went upstairs. The soft click of the cellar door latch echoed in the still house, which was quickly darkening inside from the setting sun. Patches of faded evening light filtered through the leaden windows and crisscrossed the hallway. My insides buzzed with gleeful mischief. I rounded the corner in the foyer to go upstairs, only to find Lucius seated on the bottom step. The sight of him was like a bucket of ice water had been dumped on my back. I quickly hid my smile and gripped the handle of the chamberstick. His pale, yellow-blue eyes burned with joy and his hair framed his face in what I used to think resembled a halo. Now I saw it for what it really was—a wispy, dirty aura of ill-will. His clothes were rumpled. His once white shirt was torn and stained brown, and his face glowed with the kind of mirth only given to victors.

“My prodigal son!” His tone was cheerful and incongruously warm. He stood and licked his lips, snuffed out my candle and pulled me into a tight embrace.

An acrid pool of bitterness lapped at my insides from his touch. My back teeth began to grind. He patted my shoulder and licked my ear. I stifled a gag and pulled away from his grasp. That same oily, rotten, muddy smell I’d found in his room seemed to leech from his pores. My eyes burned as I caught a whiff of it, and my nose crinkled in abject disgust at his condition.

“Such a stone-cold heart.” He smirked. “Although you’ve broken mine, I still love what special kind of monster I made you.” He put his hands on my shoulders, held me in place and stared into my eyes.

I tried fighting Lucius once, over one hundred years ago. The failed attempt put me underground for several months, too weak to hunt anything but the rats in the crypt. My ribs still bear the scars of his paternal rage. They throbbed at the memory. The thought of him nearly destroying me again struck fear into my bones. I tried to keep my voice emotionless and steady.

“What do you want, Father?” I asked.

“Thanks to your espionage, I’ve effectively neutered The Quartermaine.” He dropped his hands and straightened out his shirtsleeves. They were caked with mud. Strands of what appeared to be cat fur peppered the front ruffles of his shirt.

He seemed to take no notice of me, far too drunk on his speciously assured victory.

I pushed passed him and started up the stairs. “That’s wonderful, Father.” I said over my shoulder and tried not to glare at him or worse—divorce his head from his neck with my bare hands. I willed myself to stop grinding my teeth. If my actions in any way clued him in to my deception, he’d put me underground for decades.

“Oh, Talcott?”

The blue blood in my veins stopped cold.

“As a reward for your, I don’t know, what is this? Change of heart? It doesn’t matter.” His hands fluttered and his brow knitted. He pursed his lips before a fanged smile took over his face again. “I give you Trina.”

I stopped on the steps and quickly turned away from him. My eyes burned red and a tear of joy threatened to fall. Now I could do with her as I wished without catching the ire of the Scion Hive! I bit my tongue to keep from smiling and turned around.

“Father, I thank you for your beneficence.” I bowed. The piece of black coal beneath my ribs nearly burst with happiness.

Lucius laughed, shook his head and put his hand to his chest. “Your formality is so endearing.” He pulled a small, weathered, coffin-shaped box from his pants pocket and smirked.

My eyes widened. “You . . . you didn’t eat it?” I asked, lunging for the box.

Whoever devoured the heart of a freshly turned vampire gained their strength and held sway over their free will, rendering them the property of the consumer. My nerves electrified and pulsed at the prospect of gorging on Trina’s desiccated heart.

Lucius pulled the box just out of my reach and the contents made a sickening thud inside. I started to salivate like a mangy dog begging for table scraps.

“Say you’re sorry, and I’ll let you eat it,” Lucius said, his face hard and unflinching.

My hand clenched around the chamberstick. I went back down the steps and knelt before him. Humiliation burned and lashed at my jowls.

“I ate yours that night in the trenches whilst you slumbered, meek and young as a kitten.” He put his cold hand over the crown of my head. “Your soul tasted like,” he smacked his lips, “mhm, crisp leaves in the fall, and just a hint of an all-consuming love.”

The sound of his claws ripping soft flesh and Ilse’s curdled scream boomed within my memory. A tear fell from my eye and hit the floor. I stared at it through a watery lens as he continued unabated.

“I only ever tasted it again when I met your Ilse.”

I grit my teeth in rage. My back molar cracked as I started to stand. His hand gripped my head, and he pushed me down and held me in position. White-hot pain flared throughout my jaw and a dull ache assaulted my knees. My hands shook and the sharp edges of the chamberstick handle cut into my palm. I tasted ashen blood on my tongue as I bit into it and groaned.

“I’m still forever grateful to you for leading me to her. Your turning, finished off with her death?” He chuckled. “The most delectable, two-course meal I’ve ever had. I haven’t had anything so fresh and natural since before the industrial revolution. Everyone’s so polluted now.” His talons crushed my temples and a scream caught in my throat.

Murderous lust ignited within my veins.

The Cuff & Spurs Night Club was just your everyday, average, ordinary club—with kinky hot sex tossed in.

The members’ only club was decorated with a cowboy motif, pretty much like almost every other establishment in Jackson Hole. Not that Cora Roberts was complaining; she found the flair for Western-themed décor was part of this town’s charm.

Cuffs & Spurs was the only business she was aware of in town that was located and operated below ground. Then again, it was a private establishment and the general population was not permitted to enter. For all she knew the stores along the main drive could all have secret basements with operating businesses in them.

Up the stairs on the first floor was the Teton Cowboy Bar & Grill. The popular restaurant for tourists and locals alike helped to finance this nightclub. Both places were owned by Spencer Collins, her cousin on her mother’s side and the reason she had lucked into this job.

Spencer had done a lot for Cora upon her moving back to their old stomping ground.

The bar along the far-right wall was a lake of glossy golden wood with brass trim and fixtures. Overhead there were chandeliers crafted like wagon wheels, hung horizontally with glass cylinders on top that resembled the old-style kerosene lanterns. Even the bulbs inside were shaped like flames.

Hard rock music—there was some old-school Rod Stewart currently playing—pumped from hidden speakers in the paneled wooden walls.

The barstools were the most unique feature of the bar; they were saddles, as in going for a trail ride horse saddle. And on each stool there were silver loops in various positions for a Dom to restrain their submissive. Scene areas were cordoned off along the wall opposite the bar with black velvet rope.

There was a seating area with umber brown leather couches the color of dark tree bark and Western style décor tables in complementary colored golden woods. It reminded her of a gentleman’s study, all masculine in design with a splice of Western flair. The constant hum of conversation was overshadowed by the slap of flesh and moans.

Cora didn’t mind the bump and grind action taking place in the scene areas, the small alcoves partitioned off with thick black velvet rope. Inside the separated areas was dungeon sex style furniture designed with the kinkster in mind, which attendees used to live out their sexual fantasies. And not just any kind of sex, this was the ‘tie me up, tie me down’ style of action. The fact that this club catered to those in the BDSM lifestyle was a minor trifling issue in the scheme of it all. Whips, chains, copious amounts of flesh on display, and dungeon sex furniture didn’t make Cora blush or embarrassed. Nor did witnessing the myriad number of blow jobs and all manner of raunchy sex, not when her tips waiting tables were more than she would make anywhere else in this town. A job was a job. And she needed the cash. Who cared if she had to address the guys as Sir? For the money she was making, she’d call them whatever the hell they wanted her to.

Then there was the added bonus of the sheer amount of masculine eye candy on display. For Cora, it was as if she had stepped into a fantasy. Like the rugged outdoors of Jackson Hole, Wyoming had imbued the male club members with an extra dollop of testosterone the size of one of the nearby mountains. They were men who exuded control, masters of the world around them, including the women who were lucky enough to catch their eye. If the blissed-out expressions on the submissives’ faces were any indication, a woman could do worse than hooking up with the tough-as-nails manly men at the club.

Three’s Company
by Jae El Foster
As a reader, I know that I am in great company with the two other brilliant writers in the anthology Enchanted Fairy Tales. Lynn Hubbard and Miriam Newman both crafted such enjoyable, mesmerizing stories that I humbly bow to them.
When the call for submissions was released for Enchanted Fairy Tales, I was in the promotional stages of another anthology – Kings & Queens – and I jumped to the opportunity of the call. However, I was unsure of what to write or how to go about it. As a child, I had been privy to the classic bedtime fairy tales, and like most American children, I endured my fair share of Disney’s fairy tale remakes. Professionally, however, my writing life has always been a contrast to those childhood stories.

My focus with writing falls into multiple genres; I write what the muses tell me to write. Usually, it is horror, thrillers, contemporary, or something along those lines. I’ve enjoyed tackling romance and comedy, and it has always been a great experience to craft these tales. Yet, I will admit; I found the idea of writing a fairy tale quite daunting.

Naturally, when you’re writing a story for a call for submissions, you don’t know who else is submitting or what anyone else is writing. You don’t want to copy; you want to stay original, which means tapping into that creativity and blending the most memorable aspects of the fairy tale genre into one strong, adventurous tale.

I had to go back to my childhood and recall the things that had always stood out for me in fairy tales. There had always been a princess in peril and a prince destined to save her. There was usually a wicked stepmother that caused the princess’s peril. Fairy godmothers came to mind, as did powerful witches. I believe Walt Disney’s influence made me add a lovable animal sidekick to that list. Aside from all of these aspects, you have to remember the basics – there is usually true love’s kiss, and a happily ever after. And, if you’re crafty enough, you can work in the all powerful slaying of the dragon.

Tell me that this isn’t a daunting task.

Did I mention that when I write, I love nothing more than a daunting task?

When we take in these story dimensions and add to it the restraints of a word count, the intensity of the task grows even greater. Again, one does not know how many other authors are submitting works, how many will be accepted, and how long each will be. A guarantee is that a novel-length story will not be accepted into an anthology. It will either be flat-out rejected, or a publisher might ask that it be submitted differently as a stand-alone project, but it will not be in an anthology.

On the opposite hand, a piece of flash fiction would not encompass everything needed to build the story and complete it.

Now, there is the distinct possibility that I set myself up for things that become bigger than they should be, and there is the possibility that I over-think things and go into too much detail or take an extra turn here and there that extends the story.

In my opinion, none of these things are bad.

For my contribution to DCL Publications’ anthology Enchanted Fairy Tales, I went with a long-form short story in ‘To Adventure.’ With it, I was able to include each of the fairy tale elements that I had hoped for – everything from the cursed princess to my own special version of the slaying of the dragon – and I was able to do it in a way that kept the story moving only swiftly, accurately, and with a steady flow.

When I received news from my editor on who would be included in the anthology with me, I was both pleased and excited. I drafted some early promos for each of our contributions, as well as some ‘now available’ promos when the book was released. Both Lady Lynn and Lady Miriam are wonderful women and talented authors and I was – and am – privileged to be in their company with Enchanted Fairy Tales.

The anthology bug is a contagious one. In November, I will be included in a DCL Christmas anthology titled The Greatest Gift of All. I will be alongside DCL seasoned author Kristi Ahlers, as well as two authors who are new to the DCL family – Jennifer Patricia O’Keeffe and Roxy Q. Reise. There is even a little surprise in the anthology for our wonderful readers who have enjoyed the Dark Castle Lords for over a decade now.

As if that isn’t exciting enough, I’m helping steadfast DCL’s Valentine’s anthology called Queens of Hearts. The call for submissions for this anthology is still open and will remain so until November 16. For any authors interested in submitting, I’ve included the full call on my website at www.jaeelbooks.com/submissions. We love hearing from new and seasoned authors and are seeking fresh stories from new faces to join our current participating authors for Queens of Hearts.

Writing for an anthology is a wonderful, challenging task, and I invite all authors who have considered it to take on that challenge, embrace it, and conquer it.

Remember always to do good things.

The Gingerbread Man- A Scrumptious Erotic Fairytale
by Lynn Hubbard

Once upon a time there was a girl named Penelope. Food was scarce those days, and she had to walk miles looking for roots or berries to eat. After a long, hot morning Penelope was tired and hungry. A delicious scent led her to a cabin deep in the woods. She followed it in anticipation of having all her needs filled.

The Legend of M’Rith
by Miriam Newman

By 1844, an increase in the human population of Ireland has forced Fae inhabitants from their lush green homes in the East to the spare, bare terrain of the West–except for one. M’Rith, half fairie and half elf, has been bidden by her Queen Mother to remain in the forest, promising her a mortal man to love. Kieran, the village blacksmith, has lost his wife and lives in the same painful solitude as M’Rith, but he is a worker of iron that can mortally wound a fairie lover.

To Adventure
by Jae El Foster

There is a black plague crossing from kingdom to kingdom, placed upon a slumbering princess by her wicked stepmother, and only with true love’s kiss can the spell be lifted. Will the plague encompass all before that kiss can be sealed, or will the power of true love make itself known to the handsome Prince Harold, providing him with the adventure of a lifetime?

“I thank you for your time, but I must depart now. I have my horse with me, and it is going to storm soon.”

“That thunder does not mean rain,” she said in a cryptic tone.

“Well, I cannot chance that. Thank you again.”

Prince Harold turned from her and walked to the curtain. This time, Madame Howell did not stop him. He pulled the curtain open and stepped outside, looking up to the sky. Surely enough, the sky was clear, the moon was full, and thousands of stars glistened down upon him.

He saw the young man with the scruffy beard standing alone by the fire. Letting his encounter with Madame Howell remain behind him, locked inside that tent, he approached him.

“Hello again,” he said, stepping up to the young man. “I never did get your name.”

“That is because I never told it to you,” the young man answered.

“Well… may I know your name?”

The young man looked at him and smiled. His smile was less than comforting though. It made Prince Harold uneasy once more.

“I have been called many names,” he told him in a voice that was uncanny and dark. “My favorite has been Mephistopheles.”

Refusing to lose his smile, Prince Harold backed away slowly, placing his hands up before him. “I have heard that name,” he said in a nervous tone. “I think perhaps you shared in too much of the wine tonight, but regardless of that fact, I must be going. My horse awaits me.”

Character Creation
by Lynn Hubbard

Character Creation is one of my specialties. Every character is important. I try to flesh out as many characters as possible. Of course you want your Main characters to live and breathe but your sub characters are also important.
It helps to keep a journal with the basics. What do they look like? Hair, eye color, height, scars, etc. This might seem to be a bit much but you don’t want someone hitting their head on a doorframe in one chapter that you described as being short and stumpy in another.

Pretty much anyone that that your main characters talk to or interacts with needs a back story. Not a full back story but something about their past would be good. In my book, Run into the Wind, I have an Army Captain pop up a couple of times. One of my fans wrote begging me to write a story about him, that he was her favorite character. You never really know who your readers will fall in love with.

You need to think about your characters. Their actions and interactions should not be forced. Build the scene and describe what you see in your mind. Your character walks by a little boy crying. Take the time to introduce your readers to him. Had he just fallen and has a scrapped knee? Did his mother scold him? Just a little bit more information can change your story from 2 Dimensional to 3D. Is your character concerned about him or are they bothered by the noise? Learning about sub characters also gives us and our readers more insight into our main characters.

Unable to stem her curiosity, Penelope took a couple steps to the open doorway. She was shocked when she peeked inside. There was a bed and a man lying on top.

At least she assumed it was a man. The room was dark so she could not make out his features. Stepping closer, she froze as the wooden floor creaked beneath her feet.

Thankfully, he did not move. Taking a step closer, and then another, she reached the side of the bed. Looking down, she was shocked at what she had found: A life size Gingerbread man. She blinked her eyes twice to make sure she was seeing things right. Verifying she was sane. She fell to her knees in shock.

A day with Marie Tuhart behind the scenes – from the point of view Miss Penny, Marie’s dog – Guest Blog and Giveaway

A day with Marie Tuhart behind the scenes – from the point of view Miss Penny, Marie’s dog

Today my human mommy is letting me speak to you. My name is Penny and I’m a 4 pound toy poodle. My mommy, Marie, takes really good care of me. Her typical day is one that revolves around me – yes, I’m spoiled. When we first get up in the morning, Mommy lets me out to do my business and when I come back in she has fresh food and water for me. I get morning loves, and then she has her coffee, and gets dressed.

When she opens the computer on the desk, I know it’s time for her to work. Since it’s summer time we’re in the family room where the big white box sits connected to the window. Mommy only turns it on when it gets really hot.
Mommy spends a lot of time on her computer during the day, I hear her talking about marketing/promotions, and then there’s writing her books, and taking care of all the other things she needs to do. She reads emails, Facebook and twitter, then opens her document to write her books.

When she’s starting a new book, she’ll pull out books from her library or office. I always trot behind her to see what she’s doing. Sometimes I follow and jump into my office bed (I have more than one bed), and she just laughs at me telling me she’s not staying in the office.

Now, I can annoy Mommy when I start talking to her because I want to go outside – yes, I know I was just out, but I have to go potty now – she always gets up and lets me out. I love the sunshine and enjoy lying in the bark letting it warm me.

Mommy works while I’m outside and sometimes I have to bark or talk to her to get her attention that I’m ready to be let back in. That’s when I know Mommy is in the zone. I’ll try to stay quiet but it doesn’t always work. Sometimes I just need some snuggles, and Mommy always gives them to me.

By the later afternoon, Mommy gets off her computer for a little bit to snuggle with me and read, then she goes back to the computer to sprint with her critique group, but once that computer is shut down for the night. Mommy will get her dinner, and then sit down on the sofa. I know, at this point, I can then nap all I want and not have to worry about Mommy because she’s sitting right beside me on the sofa reading.

“Look at me.” His command was just as firm as his last. When their gazes met, he let out a breath. “How much do you know?”

“You volunteer at the local BDSM club, and teach sexual health at the university.” Her voice was soft and low.

“Yes, but how much do you know about the lifestyle?” Was she really interested? It was hard to tell.

“A bit.” She squirmed in her chair. “This isn’t the place we should be talking about this.”

Cam glanced around the café; no one was here, yet. And his sister was keeping to the kitchen. “No one is here. Tell me.”

“I…” Her gaze dropped, and she shook her head. “Not here.” Her voice was stronger. “I won’t risk my business.”

Someone walked by the café, and Cam shifted in his seat. “Meet me for dinner tonight.”

“I have to bake tonight.”

“I’ll bring dinner here, but we are going to talk.” Cam stood up and circled behind Kristen as someone walked into the café. He leaned down and whispered in her ear, “Because I can’t wait to tie you to my bed. Tease you. Torment you. And take you.” Cam straightened, turned, and strode out the café door.

Parker Williams’s Top Five Favorite Things – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Parker Williams who is celebrating today’s release of Lincoln’s Park.

Parker Williams’s Top Five Favorite Things!

1) Animals.

I love animals of all kinds. When people see an animal and go ew, there’s me trying to love on it. Doesn’t matter if it’s spiders, snakes, rats, whatever, I love them.

At our house we have eight pets. Four dogs (one of whom we adopted two weeks ago) and four cats (all of whom are pains in the butt, but still skirt by with their antics).

2) Books.

Reading is a passion of mine. Even before I took the plunge to try writing, you’d often find me with a book (or Nook) in hand. Some of my favorites include My Side of the Mountain (which was something I aspired to when I was a kid, because how cool would it be to have a falcon?), I had a ton of comic books (and it could very well have been a literal ton, because I had boxes upon boxes of them), and science books from high schools (don’t judge).

When I grew old (because I never really grew up), my tastes in stories ‘matured’. I was grateful to discover MM romance when I got The Telling by Eden Winters. I instantly fell in love with the genre, and bought so many ebooks, my Nook was screaming for mercy.

This hasn’t changed. A handful of my favorite authors (K.C. Wells (who I also write with and gave me one of my favorite books with BFF), Mary Calmes (Dante from Again is my book boo), Amy Lane (who gave me permission to have a cameo of two men from her book Bolt Hole in the second book of the series), Hurri Cosmo (because of Then Sawyer Happened, which makes me swoon), Stephani Hecht, who does some amazing shifter books, SJ Himes (her Wolfkin saga is stunning), Stormy Glenn (If you’re into shifters, you MUST read The Cat’s Meow!) and gods, so many more.

3) Music.

Now here’s where things get a little different. I enjoy music a lot, but my tasted in music is pretty eclectic. There are few songs that stand out in my mind in recent months. One of them might not be safe for work, so do be careful if you go to look.

Broadway Bares Psych Class: This video is… OMG. It features some puppy play, with grown men dressed as dogs and dancing with this excessively hot nerd who shows what is beneath the surface. The music is ‘You Can’t Teach An Old Dog New Tricks’ by Seasick Steve and ‘Lose Control’ from Hedley. I’ve watched this video every day for months, usually more than once. (I swear it’s only for the dancing! Okay, mostly for the dancing.)

Immortals: This song from Fall Out Boy was featured in Big Hero 6, a great movie from a few years ago. When KC was in town recently, we sat down to watch it. There’s something that happens in the movie that had us both in tears. The song, for some reason, sticks with me, even if the lyrics are a little…weird. (I am the sand in the bottom half of the hourglass…)

Let It Go (Epic Metal Cover): I admit, I don’t have any clue why I like this song so much. The guy’s voice is intense, but he’s also sexy as hell. Yup, no clue why I like it so much.

4) Ice Cream!

Paul and I are vegan, so finding good ice cream is sometimes a daunting task. Then we had a store move in down the street from us, and they’re incredible. Babe’s Ice Cream has both regular and vegan ice cream and they make freaking to die for shakes and ice cream sandwiches. Paul’s favorite flavor is raspberry nebula (which Becky Condit and K.C. Wells both enjoyed while they were here). Mine is vanilla chocolate chip. If you’re ever in Milwaukee, hit me up and I’ll let you know how to find them.

5) Hurt characters…

It’s part of their futile search for a few selected website and compare their services to choose the best and new.castillodeprincesas.com free levitra samples most profitable Kamagra buy offer online for the power which you want for yourself. One notable plus point is that http://new.castillodeprincesas.com/directorio/seccion/trajes-de-novia/?wpbdp_sort=-field-1 cheap viagra not just laptops, you can also sell or exchange mobile phones, smart phones, personal computers, and tablets. To solve free sample of viagra this problem, there are several types of commercial solutions. These days, every individual are aware of testosterone that is accountable for the continuation of a pregnancy. viagra sample free And finally, my best favorite in books are characters who are in need of healing.

We’ve already talked about The Telling by Eden Winters (and there was a sequel as well called Night Watch). PTSD comes into play in this book, and the whole story is never really over, because PTSD doesn’t just go away.

The Fish series by Amy Lane. This isn’t a traditional romance. Yes, Jackson and Ellery love one another, but Jackson’s got scars you’re never going to see, and he needs Ellery to keep him together. If you like your stories a bit more grim, I strongly suggest you check this out.

And from me, Runner. When he was sixteen, the main character was assaulted by a teacher. It sent him into a meltdown, forcing him to move to a remote area. The one day a man runs down his road, and keeps coming back.

Matt and Charlie are two of my favorite personal characters. Like The Telling, Matt’s traumas don’t go away. He’s doing his best to get a handle on them, but he knows they’ll always be there, and one wrong word, a strange feeling, or even a bad memory could take him back to that day.

So there you have it. Now you know a little more about what goes on in my mind. Thank you for visiting, and remember to pick up all bottles, plates, and condom wrappers as you go. 

Lincoln Merriweather was born an entitled brat with a silver spoon lodged so deep, it might never have come out. At the BDSM club or in business, Lincoln was a storm, blowing in and disrupting the lives of everyone he touched, until the day he met a man who peeled away the tarnished layers to expose a decent person.

Lincoln found—then lost—love.

Since then, he’s tried to atone for his past, including walking away from his family’s wealth. He opened a diner, hiring people to work for him that he would have spit on before his epiphany. He’s found peace, which he’s about to lose to a hazel-eyed man.

Noel Simmons wound up on the street when his parents discovered he was gay. His path leads him to Lincoln’s diner, where he asks for a job. He’s thrilled when Lincoln agrees to hire him, but finds his new boss perplexing. Can anyone be this kind and decent?

What starts out as business becomes something more. Noel discovers he needs Lincoln in order to feel safe. Lincoln needs Noel to complete him. But when Lincoln’s past gets in the way of his present, will the two have a future?

He believes in love, but also knows that anything worth having requires work and sacrifice (and maybe a little hurt and comfort too). The course of true love never runs smooth, and he enjoys writing about it.
Parker lives in Milwaukee, WI, with his husband, Paul, and their menagerie of dogs and cats. Most days you’ll find him on Facebook, sharing stories and pictures of the zoo, or even about Paul, who is always good for a laugh.

There are worse things a girl can do to get a boost up the career ladder.

Alice Brown has just landed her dream job as property manager at Davenport Manor, a British stately home. It’s only a nine-month contract to cover maternity leave, but it will provide her with the vital experience she needs to progress in her chosen career.

However, her dream job soon threatens to become a nightmare when she discovers her boss, Jeremy Davenport, in a compromising position. Her shock is exacerbated when Jeremy, far from being embarrassed or apologetic about what happened, manipulates the situation until somehow, she’s the one in the wrong. He and his best friend, Ethan Hayes, the head of security at Davenport Manor, give her an ultimatum. Faced with the possibility of losing her job and endangering her future prospects, Alice reluctantly agrees to their indecent proposal.

When the dust settles, Alice comes to the conclusion that playing their kinky games isn’t such a bad thing, after all. But what happens when she thinks she’s falling for both men?

Alice took a deep breath, in through her nose, and out through her mouth. Repeated the process once more. Then, realising she could sit there all day doing it and not feel any calmer, she forced herself to step out of the car and close and lock the door.

She bent to peer into the wing mirror of the vehicle and checked her hair and make-up. Satisfied, she straightened, then turned on her heel and walked quickly across the driveway to the great house before her nerve failed her.

Davenport Manor was currently open for visitors, so she walked in through the front door and was met by a smiling elderly lady.
“Can I help you?” the woman asked kindly.

“Yes, please.” Alice twisted her hands together nervously. “I’m here to see Mr Davenport. I’m here for an interview for the property manager’s role.”

“Yes, of course,” the woman replied, “that’s today, isn’t it? Follow me; I’ll take you to Mr Davenport’s office. But just hang on one second.”

She ducked through the doorway into the next room and spoke with her colleague. Alice guessed she was letting her co-worker know she’d be gone for a few minutes. A few seconds later, she was back. “Okay, follow me, Miss…”

“Brown,” Alice said, then fell in behind the other woman as she led her to Mr Davenport’s office, and the interview that could change her life forever. It was hardly surprising that she was shaking like a leaf.

Alice quickly became disorientated as their journey took several twists and turns along dim corridors—their blinds drawn to protect paintings, tapestries, and furniture from the sunlight—and up a flight of stairs. She had a few seconds to worry about finding her way if she was lucky enough to get the job, then her guide stopped outside a door and turned around.

“Here you go, Miss Brown. Mr Davenport’s office. Good luck with your interview.”

Alice smiled and thanked the elderly woman, then smoothed down her skirt, which also conveniently wiped the nervous sweat off her hands. She stood up straight, gave herself a mental pep talk about being more than qualified for the role, and knocked on the door.

“Enter.”

Alice knew that voice could only belong to Jeremy Davenport. The posh accent, and the fact he’d said “enter” instead of “come in”, screamed money and an upper-class upbringing. Alice was suddenly desperately aware of her broad Midlands accent and lowly background, despite the fact she’d worked her backside off to get into a decent university in order to gain a Bachelor of Arts degree and then a Master’s degree. No matter what she sounded like, or what her past was, she had all the skills necessary to do the job she was about to be interviewed for.

She realised she’d left rather a long pause before opening the door, and turned the handle before the occupants of the room thought they were about to interview some kind of simpleton who couldn’t follow a simple instruction.

Fixing a polite—but hopefully not inane—smile onto her face, Alice stepped into Jeremy Davenport’s office. Her first thought—which certainly did nothing to help her nerves—was good God, he’s hot.
