Anna has plans for her life. This fall, she will be heading off to medical school, well on her way to becoming a doctor. But first, she and her besties head to Ireland to celebrate.

Nowhere did her future plans even include serious dating, let alone becoming mated to a man who can turn into a freaking beast with wings. Nor did she reckon with being sucked through a portal onto another planet while on her way home from a great night out.

Yet from the very first time her new mate touches her, Anna wonders if this could be the real deal – as in: the big L. The only problem is, her mate says his kind do not love; they protect, they pleasure, and they provide. Can Anna really kiss goodbye to all her plans for the future, and agree to spend the rest of her existence without love?

Earth. He loathed this vile planet.

D’Vorak cursed his current predicament, perched high above the city on the flat, stone roof edge of a tall building. He scanned the surrounding area. His mission: find the three women, kidnap them, and get the lot to Rhiannon. If he accomplished his quest, she would cancel the compact his people had with the Clovis. It could only be voided by magic, which none of his people—himself included—had. When the pact ended, his people would be free of the Clovis once and for all. It was why he had taken charge of the mission and did not have one of his generals execute it. Their freedom from the compact must be won before their deception was uncovered. The Clovis could not get their hands on what they had built.

This world smelled like a swampy bog filled with methane gas, excrement, and an undercurrent of desperation. The stench permeated his being to the point where he was unsure he would ever be rid of it, even upon his return to Destruna. In all his days, D’Vorak had never seen so many stone buildings side by side together, or paved stone streets, and they went on for miles and miles, bleeding into the horizon. If he wanted wide open spaces, forests, trees, and grass, he would have to fly many miles, to the perimeter of the city and beyond.

The overcrowding press from multitudes of people left him with the urge to tear this planet apart. How anyone could live with so many people present, he had no clue. It would drive him mad. He could sense them, every heartbeat, every voice, all layered upon each other, drowning the individual out and created a deafening kaleidoscope of sound. The frenetic pace of this planet made it unbalanced and ungainly. It was a world in chaos on the brink of collapse. The skies were scorched, the air infused with noxious chemicals so thick he could taste them in his beast form. It was a wonder these people survived.

How could they not sense the impending doom? That their world was dying?

Balancing Life and Writing

I’d like to thank Long and Short Reviews Blog for hosting a stop on my Zoey’s Place Virtual Tour. I hope I can connect with your readers and make them curious enough to read my book.

I chose to write my post about balancing life and writing. It’s something that the majority of us writers do. For every NY Times best-selling author there are hundreds if not thousands of authors like me. The money we make from our book sales usually doesn’t pay for the cost of publication let alone put food on the table. Most of us must have day jobs. Some of us are lucky enough to only have to work part time so we spend more time on our craft.

I have to give credit to the working mother authors who not only juggle a day job and motherhood but also are able to throw writing in the mix as well. Kudos to you, ladies.

We little-known, but hard-working authors write for the love of writing. We thrive on giving pleasure to others through the stories that build up in our brains and beg to come out. Being an author is almost like having a split personality because you can put on the face of the character you are writing about, get into their skin, and be someone else. You can say and do things that you would never dream of doing in real life. Sometimes that’s very hard when you are writing about the villain in your story. Sometimes it’s hard to put yourself into the mind of the decadent and depraved. Sometimes it feels good to be the bad guy. They get to indulge in all of the guilty pleasures. It’s true that I may have borrowed characteristics from people I’ve known, or met, or even of myself. But that’s what I believe makes the characters believable.

My husband and I have no children living at home. We run a small home construction company from our house. I’m able to take care of the office and still have more than enough time for my writing. My biggest challenge is hiding the fact that I write erotic romance to everyone I meet. I’m very proud of my books and I want the world to know about them. But I live in a very small, rural, straight-laced community. The local reverend and his congregation frown on alcohol, I can just imagine what they think about my books. Oh, well. They are not for everybody. Although I secretly hope the reverend’s wife has a copy in her nightstand. I have to keep my author alter ego a secret for the sake of our business.

In Zoey’s Place, my main character, Zoey DeLucca, is intelligent, strong-minded and not intimidated by men, sounds vaguely familiar. She is confident and likes to win. The reverend and his congregation wouldn’t like her either. Let alone her stone-cold hunk of a husband who has been known to procure hookers for clients of the oil company he works for. He is a powerful businessman, and also strong-minded and a winner. He loves Zoey dearly. They are the perfect match. Did I mention they both enjoy having sex, a lot?

Zoey and Mickey’s life gets complicated and obstacles try to ruin their happiness. What book would be complete without drama? There’s plenty of that in Zoey’s Place, too. Zoey has a unique way to overcome the challenges that come her way. So, if you enjoy a good, sexy, love story with adventure, intrigue, and lots of erotica, then I invite you to pick up your copy of Zoey’s Place.

Thank you for visiting and happy reading.

Zoey DeLucca is a successful Michigan divorce attorney. Growing up the center of a bitter custody battle between her neglectful mother and her caring father convinced her to become a Family Law attorney and champion the father’s that seldom won in court.

Her handsome husband, Mickey, works for an oil development company. The money is great but as he climbs the corporate ladder, he must spend more time traveling and away from home.

It was love at first sight when they met in college. Their storybook marriage is the envy of all of their friends. They keep the spark in their marriage glowing red hot with wild, uninhibited behaviors in the bedroom. So why does the feeling of impending doom occupy Zoey’s thoughts?

Zoey’s Place is a modern erotic romance about bonding friendships and life’s lessons. See how Zoey handles the challenges that come her way. Experience her joys, fears, and unusual solutions.

This book contains explicit sex scenes and very mature subject matter. It is intended for adult pleasures only. So, turn on the fan, because it’s going to get hot!

It was early evening. A scarlet sunset had faded into muted grey tones. The shimmering reflection of the moon danced on the surface of the lake as the lovers emerged naked, hand in hand.

The subject of love was not brought up nor was the word uttered by either. But it was love that was made that night. It was passionate and personal. They were two unwittingly becoming one.

About the Author: E.M. Bannock grew up in the Detroit suburbs. She is the second child of seven and eldest daughter of a working class family. Her parents had traditional, old style, European ideals which clashed with her modern, adventurous personality. The daughters were not encouraged to attend college. Instead they were expected to get married, have children, and be homemakers.

Her father was a great storyteller and sparked her love for writing. In high school she enjoyed writing short stories and poetry. A small inheritance from her father gave her the funds needed to begin her career as a published author. She has published two books, Totally Devoted, which is also available in audio, and Zoey’s Place.

Born with the wanderlust, she found herself in Los Angeles. LA was an exciting place to be in the early 70’s and she experienced all that it had to offer. She met her husband there.

Marie and her small family have lived in California, Oregon, Alaska, Florida, and Wyoming, where she now lives with her small family which includes a spoiled dog and cat, two horses, also spoiled, and a brood of chickens that live like queens in the chicken-coupe-de-ville.

She has made her living as an office manager, computer programmer/analysts, project manager, clothing sales person, substitute teacher, and buffalo meat packer. Throughout it all, she never lost her love for writing.

E.M. Bannock is a Goodreads Author, a BookHub Author, a member of the Romance Writers of America, and a Rocky Mountain Fiction Writer. Her book, “Totally Devoted” is a finalist for a 2019 NERFA (National Excellence in Romance Fiction Award) in two categories.

Mermaids of the Winding River by Katherine Eddinger Smits – Guest Blog and Giveaway

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Katherine Eddinger Smits who is visiting with us today to celebrate the upcoming release of A Darker Shade of Evil, a Demon and Devil anthology, in which her short story “Siren Descending” appears. Pre-order the entire anthology for only $1.99 and check out the bottom of the post to find out how to win an autographed book.

Mermaids of the Winding River

Named by the Seminole Indians, Weeki Wachee, a river near Central Florida’s west coast, means Little Spring or Winding River. Winding River fits it best. From underground caverns, the head spring puts out 117 million gallons of water per day with a 5 mile per hour current. The river twists, turns and angles, sometimes shallow, sometimes deep in what is either a kayakers dream or nightmare, depending on whether you want a challenging paddle or a relaxing drift. The water is 72 to 74 degrees all year. That’s freezing refreshing on a scorching hot day.

After purchasing and developing the land and inventing an air hose for trained swimmers to breathe underwater without scuba equipment, Newton Perry, a former Navy Seal, opened Weeki Wachee Springs park in 1947. He also hired the first “mermaids” and choreographed the shows.

The site was miles from any towns or other attractions. However, it became a major tourist draw in the 1950s and 1960s, especially after it was purchased by ABC.

I grew up about 26 miles from the park and took my first swimming lessons there. When my family took me to see the mermaid show, I was entranced. Descending from the 90+ degree heat of a summer day in Florida into the chilled, underwater theater 16 feet below the surface introduced me to a mesmerizing world of fish, turtles and real mermaids in gorgeous fish tail costumes. I couldn’t get enough.

From then on, I spent every possible moment in pools, the ocean and rivers, dreaming of breathing underwater. I loved the Greek stories of mermaids, sea nymphs (shape-shifters who could have legs or tails), nereids (water nymphs tied to rivers and springs), sirens (fish tailed or winged women who lured sailors to crash their ships on the rocks), sea witches (mermaids or women with power over the sea, weather, or seafaring life), and water sprites (creatures with skin the color of the sea who can breathe underwater).

The remarkable young women who performed in the mermaid shows personified my vivid fantasies. I desperately wanted to be a mermaid, but you must do more than swim well to perform underwater. The mermaids can hold their breath for up to four minutes! They are athletes who undergo extensive training and conditioning in order to look graceful and effortless. Think of a ballerina crossed with a marathon runner and you get an idea. I was not cut out for it.

For years in the small towns around the area, the mermaids were local celebrities who young men found irresistible. They made appearances at fairs and grand openings. Some had careers in show business.

One year dark rumors circulated about mysterious mermaid deaths. However, the newspapers never reported anything and the rumors stopped. I think jealous people were spreading malicious gossip.

After Disney World opened and the Orlando area became Florida’s tourist mecca, many of the old roadside attractions closed. We worried that Weeki Wachee would too. However, a small group of locals (many former mermaids) first incorporated the area into a small town and later convinced the government to take over the attraction and make it a state park.

In the 1980s, I took my children to the park, but they weren’t as enamored with it as I was. My daughter liked it, but preferred kayaking to watching the show. My son enjoyed swimming.

Today Weeki Wachee State Park bustles with visitors. Reasons to visit also include boat rides down the river, a picnic area, a beach with rope swings, and kayak rentals. For those of us who still long for the mermaid experience, two day camps for ages 30+ run during the summer. Want to sign up? Plan ahead. They sell out a year in advance.
Someday, when my granddaughters are old enough, I hope to take them to the park on the Winding River. Maybe they will love mermaids as much as I do.

Mermaids symbolize feminine beauty, power, mystery and allure. The legends of half-women, half-fish creatures who live in the sea and entice sailors with their irresistible songs are common to most cultures and are a popular trope for both ancient myths and contemporary stories.

Since I couldn’t be one, I write about mermaids, mages and other magical creatures. My mermaids have the siren song, can shape-shift, and are stronger than humans. They keep their existence hidden from ordinary people until they fall in love with them. When that happens, it’s combustible.

I’m doing a special giveaway for this blog. One person who comments will be randomly selected to win a signed copy of the first book in the Love’s Siren Song series, Water Dreams.

Connie White is running away from an abusive relationship. Fear and desperation have driven her to Bowdley Hall Hotel in the Scottish Highlands, where, despite an unceremonious start, she appears to have fallen on her feet. Her apparent mysteriousness doesn’t faze her gorgeous new colleagues Will MacIntyre, Nico Moretti, and Ashley Fox. All three show a keen interest in her, but Connie has absolutely no intention of going there. She hasn’t fled one relationship, only to get involved with someone else, no matter how gorgeous. She simply isn’t ready for that.

Prologue

Only the slop, slop, slopping sound of her painfully slow footsteps through the thick, sucking mud convinced Connie White she was actually making any progress. Her limbs and extremities had long since gone so numb that she couldn’t be sure otherwise.

Come on, Con, just a little bit further. That sign said something about an estate, and an estate means buildings. A bloody cowshed will do—anything for some respite from this infernal sodding weather.

The connective tissues in the organ or the muscles must be in right position to sit in commode so that you can gain or even sustain impotence to have an cute-n-tiny.com viagra prescription enough time period. She pushed on for several more minutes, then gasped with shock and relief when her next step met not with sloppy mud or waterlogged grass, but a track. A rough track, but a track nonetheless. And it had to lead somewhere, surely? It ran left to right across the line she’d been taking, so Connie had to make a decision. Which way would lead her to… something? She was already soaked to the skin and freezing cold, so a couple of seconds of rumination wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference to her physical state. She really didn’t want to end up going in the wrong direction and heading further away from any semblance of civilisation.

She took a breath and remembered her gran’s—long since dead, bless her—nonsensical motto—or one of them, anyway: If in doubt, turn left.

Connie shrugged, and another of her gran’s daft phrases flitted into her brain. In for a penny, in for a pound.

She hoiked her backpack higher, hunched her shoulders against the relentless wind and rain, and turned left. Moments later, she was rewarded as the hulking shape of a building appeared from the sheets of wind-buffeted rain. Excitement gave her a burst of energy, spurring her on. Fifty feet. Forty. Twenty-five. God, what was this place? It looked so old and decrepit the Vikings could have left it behind. Doesn’t matter. If it provides even a modicum of shelter, it’s an improvement on where you slept last night. The wooden bench on the tiny village’s green hadn’t exactly been the warmest or most comfortable place to lay her head. And she shuddered to think about what would have happened if someone unsavoury had happened across her, alone and vulnerable. She’d been very glad to wake up and hurriedly continue on her journey that morning.

The last few feet went by in a blur of motion, her body still numb and not entirely under her control. At least the track was easier to walk on. It wasn’t particularly smooth, but at least it wasn’t trying to pull off her walking boots, like the sucking mud had been.

Finally, she burst through the building’s heavy door, only the adrenaline pumping in her veins making it possible to even shift the thing. Fuck, I’m exhausted.

The last thing she remembered was shucking off her backpack and slamming the door against the elements. Then silence.

The Craziest Thing I’ve Ever Done in the Name of Research by Lilith Thorn – Guest Blog and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. One randomly chosen winner via rafflecopter will win a $50 Amazon/BN.com gift card. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

The Craziest Thing I’ve Ever Done in the Name of Research
Did you ever see that episode of Sex and the City where Samantha claims that fake, erect nipples attracts men? I did and I took the challenge. It was summer and I was about twenty years younger.

I was taking a writing class at George Brown College. I actually don’t recall the assignment, but decided to take Samantha up on her recommendation and see if a false pair of nipples would increase my odds of meeting a handsome man.

I started my experiment cautiously. A tight tee, broad daylight at my very own yard sale. In hindsight, this was likely the bravest scenario I tested those puppies out in. Stone cold sober, selling my used crap and wearing fake nipples in front of my own home. To my disappointment, no one seemed to notice, at all. Or if they did, they simply didn’t care. Which ended up being a theme for this whole adventure.

I took them out to a karaoke bar, hoping that people would be too focused on the nipple enhancers and overlook my poor singing skills. No such luck. So I try a new night and a new bar. This time I leave with more compliments to my hair than romantic encounters.

Frustrated with my new nipples I take them out for one last ‘spin’ at the North by North East Music Festival. It’s the sort of night when car windows are down for the first time in a long time and the excitement of summer tingles through the air. You can feel the freedom that comes from shedding winter layers allowing the air to touch your skin. It is electric. I have on my favourite ‘little black dress’ heels and, of course, my firm friends.

The night is off to a good start, guys are hanging out of their car windows cat calling to ladies walking down the street. Since the cars are approaching from behind, I’m pretty sure their attention doesn’t count towards my objective.

I hit three bars meeting up with three different groups of friends and I’m not anywhere close to getting the results that I had hoped for. In fact, no one seems to notice, at all. The night ends and I climb aboard the street car to head home, my disappointment apparent. The highlight of my evening is a woman, a stranger, who calls to me as I board, “Smile! You’re beautiful.” Her boyfriend nods in agreement. I thank them for the compliment with the smile they have asked for, but spend the ride home contemplating my nipple let down.

I chalk up this failed experiment to being Canadian. Perhaps everyone was too polite. I recall, that in my research, I had learned that the idea for these fake nipples came from a dare creator Lori Barghini took while in Vegas. She and her friends wore hotel sized shampoo caps in their bras while they hit the strip. Men threw themselves at the ladies’ feet with comments like “For you, my pay cheque for the rest of my life.” But surely the “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” mentality factored into that sort of result. Seriously, who mistakes shampoo caps for nipples and how does that truly inspire men to throw themselves at a woman’s feet?

It was the last night I wore them out. They spent a few years in the bottom of a drawer in my dresser before they were thrown into a pile of items donated to charity. I hope whoever got them next would have more luck with them than I did.

Niamh is a good wife. She learned early on that crossing her husband had consequences. Living quietly in the shadowed cage he has formed around her, Niamh suffers his secrets and bares the scars they leave behind.

On the night of her biggest humiliation Caleb enters the ballroom changing Niamh’s course forever. He brings safety to her dark world and introduces her to the possibility of escape. Will Niamh’s love for Caleb be the key to her freedom or will it be her undoing?

He is the man I would have noticed first, had he been in the room when I arrived. As it was, he arrived “fashionably late”, as we’d say now. Men and women alike stole glances as he strode through the doors; we were too polite a society to stare.

He is the kind of creature that draws all eyes to himself without doing much to deserve it. Though this was not his home, he was the king of the castle. Even in my distracted state, I soaked in his energy, felt him before I saw him and, like a magnet pulling me, my body turned toward him.

Had I been anyone but my demure self, my jaw may have hung open or I may have walked toward him to embarrass myself with a bumbled, unasked for introduction. Instead, as his eyes met mine, I quickly glanced away and blushed. Later – much later – he would tell me it was the blood rushing to my cheeks that drew him to me.

About the Author: Born in Dundas, ON, Lilith Thorn is a restless wanderer. Her first move was to St. Catharines where she earned a Theatre degree at Brock University. Despite her parents’ wish that she would return home and work at McDonalds after graduating, Lilith refused and instead moved to Toronto to give acting the ‘Old College Try.’ After years of sacrificing her other passions for the stage and an empty bank account, she put away those dreams to say “Yes” to a different adventure. This took her to Dublin, Ireland for a few years where she met, fell in love with, and married another Canadian who took her to the one place she said she’d never live: Yellowknife. After nearly a decade in Canada’s Great White North, Lilith looks forward to further adventures with her husband and two children, just about anywhere.

Lilith Thorn is a pen name, the pseudonym used to protect the innocent; that is, so she hopefully never has to explain to her mother-in-law over dinner that she has written an erotic novel.

Baking Macarons, Part 1 by Xenia Melzer – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Xenia Melzer who is celebrating today’s release of A Dom and His Gentleman. She has written a short story about the main characters, and we are happy to share Part One of “Baking Macarons” with you.  Be sure to check back for the next installment!

“Baking Macarons”
“Okay everybody, I have the recipe from Pinterest. Let’s get started!” Dean looked around the kitchen. They were all here, Leeland, Curtis, Collin, and Seth, gathered to reveal the secret of the macarons. Emilio was only one week from his convention and on an even stricter diet than Leeland during his stint at the UFC. He didn’t want to be tempted, so he had excused himself. Peyton was furniture hunting somewhere in Colorado, of all places, and had made them promise to safe some for him. Depending on how well their experiment was going to go, he might get them all.

“Let me see.” Leeland snatched the recipe from Dean’s hands, quickly scanning the words. “It says we have to follow the instructions and measurements as precisely as possible.” He furrowed his brows. “I didn’t know we were doing surgery on an open heart. Andrew doesn’t strike me as somebody who could do surgery on an open heart.”

“Give that back. You’re just cranky because you didn’t get to kick his ass.” Dean took charge of the recipe again.

“For which I’m grateful, by the way”, Curtis chimed in. He looked at Dean. “What do we have to do?”

“We need two bowls, the powdered sugar, the almonds, and the cocoa. Collin?”

“How big do they have to be? The bowls I mean. We have so many different sizes here, even though we rarely cook and certainly never with bowls, but now that I think about it, bowls have a great shape, half round, which is good for getting all kinds of things on them and I could totally start carving bowls, working with the patterns the wood provides, and…”

“Bowls, Collin. We need two bowls.” Seth’s voice was gentle while he tried to redirect Collin’s train of thought. They were in his kitchen and none of them wanted to start shifting through all the cupboards when Collin knew where things were. If only he could stay focused long enough.

“Oh yes, the bowls. Do we need just two, are you sure?” He started opening a cupboard next to the sink, which was filled with bowls of all sizes.

“We need a third one for the egg whites. And something where we can put the yolk.” Dean read through the recipe again. “That’s all. At least for the macarons. For the filling, we’re going to need a lot more bowls.”

“First things first.” Curtis took two middle-sized bowls and put them on the counter. Then he placed another, smaller one next to the kitchen aid. “Bowls are ready, Captain.” Curtis saluted in Dean’s direction. Dean simply showed him how long his tongue was.

“We also need a sieve. The powdered sugar, grounded almonds and cocoa have to go through it at least twice. Apparently we don’t want big pieces of almond in our dough.”

“I thought that’s why they’re already grounded?” Leeland looked at the plastic package in which the almonds were waiting as if it had somehow personally offended him.

“Perhaps the machines don’t do a good job of it?” Seth was opening the carton with the powdered sugar and started coughing when a huge cloud of white exploded in his face. Collin giggled.

“You look, funny, Seth, all white and sprinkled and sweet.”

Seth grabbed a dishtowel to clean his face while the others laughed happily. “I don’t know what happened. I just opened the lid. Stupid stuff.”

“At least it’s sweet. Could be worse things”, Curtis said with twitching lips.

Seth shuddered. “If that’s your way of reminding me of he-who-came-way-too-early-and-in-my-face-without-permission I’m telling you it’s too soon. Yes, I will one day see this episode as an amusing bump on my road to a happy relationship, but at the moment, the sour taste of his cum still makes me want to throw up.”

“It’s fine, my friend. Just too early.” Seth shuddered. “Way too early.”

“Let’s stop chatting and start working!” Dean clapped his hands.

“Yes, Captain.” Curtis bowed deeply.

“Why are you calling Dean ‘captain’? He knows nothing about ships. He couldn’t even make Emily’s toy boat swim in the pool. It drowned!” Collin was chewing his lip, looking confused.

“Collin, that was supposed to stay between us!” Dean squealed indignantly.

Leeland chimed in before Collin could apologize. “It’s fine, Collin. Since we’re all friends here, it’s important we know about each other’s victories and defeats alike.” He winked at Dean, the mischievous twinkling in his eyes promising endless needling about the matter. “And Curtis is calling Dean ‘captain’ to annoy him.”

“He does captain the ship of baking, though.” Seth was pouring the powdered sugar into one of the bowls, creating another white cloud in the air.

Around eleven o’clock, Holly’s mom realized she had forgotten her camera, so Holly volunteered to get it from her car. She pulled a winter jacket over her red party dress, hurried downstairs, and stepped outside.

She was almost to the sidewalk when a deep voice stopped her.

“Hey.”

She spun quickly, her heart racing. The last time someone had done that do her, she’d nearly been attacked.

Declan was leaning against the wall, wearing nothing but jeans, boots, and a snug black sweater. No coat despite the cold night. He held a cigarette between his long fingers. She had made it clear on the night she’d hired him that there was no smoking inside the building. He had always obeyed that rule and gone outside, but she couldn’t help being concerned whenever she saw him smoke.

“What’s going on?” he continued. “Are you running away from your own party?”

“Just getting my mom’s camera from her car.”

He straightened and approached, taking a drag from the cigarette. “I’ll go with you.”

“She’s parked just down the street. I don’t need a chaperone.”

“Humor me, okay? What if Sasquatch is still hanging out around here? Your legs in that dress and heels are enough to drive a sane man crazy,” he said, and then his expression froze. “Shit. That’s not appropriate from maintenance guy to boss. I’m not coming on to you or anything like that.”

Now Holly’s pulse was really pounding. Trying to look nonchalant, she shrugged and said, “I’m not offended.”

“Good.”

“The car is this way.” She started walking, and he fell into step beside her.

Walking beside him like this, with her in delicate heels and a party dress, and him so uncommonly masculine, made her tingle all over. Again she wished they were more than employer and employee.

“You know you shouldn’t smoke,” she remarked. “It’s bad for your health.”

“Why do you care?”

“Why do you care if I walk out here alone at night?”

He raised his eyes to heaven. “Okay. You got me. You’re the one who said I’m not only an employee, I’m a friend.”

“Then that’s why I care.”

She paused at her mother’s car, unlocked it, and removed the camera from the glove compartment. On their way back to the building, she noticed that he still had the cigarette.

“I still don’t understand how a man who runs miles every morning before breakfast smokes cigarettes. But, if you don’t care about your health, there are other reasons you shouldn’t smoke,” she continued.

He narrowed his dark, slanted eyes at her. “Like?”

“Like how do you expect a woman to kiss you if you taste and smell like an ashtray?”

He laughed, shocking the hell out of her. In the entire two weeks he’d been working for her, she had never heard him laugh.

“It’s true,” she said.

“All right. You probably have a point.” He finally dropped the cigarette and crushed it under his boot.

“You’re littering now?”

“Oh, Holly, more than your legs can drive a man crazy.”

“We started off on the wrong foot and I want to correct that.” Saul kissed my knuckles.

The touch of his lips sent a shock wave through my body. Hoo boy! He had chemistry in spades.

“How did you plan on doing that?”

“I’m going to show you how a real man treats his woman.”

His woman? I narrowed my eyes at him. “I’m not your woman.”

“You will be.”

“Wanna bet?” I tried to free my hand.

Saul simply tightened his grip and drew me closer. “One kiss and your panties will be wet.”

“Not happening.”

“I love a challenge.” His mouth closed over mine in a sensual kiss that stole my breath and addled my senses. My girly parts were jumping up and down in glee. More. More.

Casey cleared her throat. “Ah, Uncle Saul, the Overlord is heading our way.”

Saul lifted his head and for a moment I mourned the loss of his very talented mouth. “We will continue this later.”

“Can’t wait.” I used sarcasm to cover my arousal.

Saul smiled and whispered in my ear, “Your panties are wet, darlin’.”

“You wish.”

“I know.” Saul released me and walked over to greet the Overlord.

Ammo and Enchiladas by BA Tortuga – Spotlight

Long and Short Reviews welcomes BA Torguga who is visiting with us to celebrate the recent release of Ammo and Enchiladas, the second book in the Border Crossing series.

Ammo and Enchiladas

Hey, y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck and New Mexico newbie. Ammo and Enchiladas, the second in the Border Crossing series, is the story of Brant, a Texan nurse living in Albuquerque, and Lex, a cop from Las Cruces and how they fall in love.

*grins*

Because the best stories are about that, right?

After a night at the movies in Albuquerque, NM, Brantley’s best friend, Matt, is shot right in front him during a robbery. Stunned and devastated, Brant tries to help Matt’s husband, Travis, deal with the funeral details even as he struggles with his own grief and Travis’s blame. When Travis’s best friend arrives, Brant is both annoyed and grateful, because he is so darn tired and can use the help.

Lex Espana is ashamed to admit he hasn’t seen his childhood best friend since Travis’s wedding. He’s even more amazed that he barely remembers Brant from that wedding, because he’s sure interested now. While it’s weird to fall for someone at a funeral, his feelings for Brant are real and make him long for a life he didn’t realize he was missing.

Neither Lex nor Brant knows how to be part of an us, though, and they both have a lot to work through before they can settle in. To become a real couple, Brant and Lex will have to dig deep to get past the roadblocks in their relationship.

“Right. I know you. You’ll have posters hung everywhere,” Dusty shot back.

“Hey! Maybe I can have a tiny man cave….”

“You can have the third bedroom, honey.” No posters. Those things were awful.

“I bet he only needs half of it, but it will smell like a gym.”

Nate snorted, but when Dusty added, “And gun oil,” they all cracked up.

That had never occurred to him, though. Having a cop in the house. Having a gun in the house. Did Lex have a gun safe?

“Do you have a gun safe, honey?”

“I do. It’s not a big one, but it doesn’t need to be. We can put it in a closet. Does that work for you?”

“Yeah, that’s cool. I just didn’t know if we needed one.” He knew how to shoot a firearm, but that hadn’t been his job in the service, and he hadn’t shot one since.

“We’ll see what the situation looks like. I have a regular sidearm and an ankle pistol. Do you have a firearm?”

“I don’t, honey.” Part of him was all Christ, that’s hot, and part was freaking out a little bit.

Lex winked, then ran a hand up and down his back. “You ready?”

He shook himself mentally. He wanted this. “I am. We’ll have our bring-Lex-home caravan.”

“Good deal.” Lex took a short kiss. “Holler if you need to stop.”

“We’re ready. We’ll see you when we stop.” Nate looked almost giddy.

“Got it.” Lex winked broadly at everyone. “Let’s do it.”

Brant climbed into his car and started it up. This wasn’t how he’d expected to head home. He’d expected to be down, to be grumpy, not loaded to the gills and bringing Lex home. He couldn’t stop grinning, even as his nerves jittered.
Brant wished Matty was here, to share this with, to tell him that it was going to be amazing. To tease him.

He had a terrible little pang then, because every time he remembered Matty was gone, his chest hurt.

“You are supposed to be here, man. You’re supposed to help me out, talk to me.”

Matty never answered, which was good. Only crazy people in movies talked to ghosts. People who heard ghosts talk back were committed. He shook his head. This was a good thing. He wasn’t going to have it any other way.

This was his good thing, dammit.

Still, he’d like a little…. His phone rang, Bridey’s name popping up. Christ, Bridey was good at that.

He hit the hands-free. “Hey, Bubba.”

“Hey, you. What up?”

“I—” How did he say this? How on earth did he admit that he was bringing a lover home?

“You okay? I know you miss Matty.”

“I do. Bad. I-I got something to tell you, man.” He opened his Coke, his head beginning to throb.

“So tell me.” Bridey didn’t have a lot of patience for bullshit.

“I met someone.” Three little words. So many were so fucking important. I met someone. I’m into him. He’s moving in. I love him.

Desperate for an escape, Jae Copeland takes a solo kayaking trip into the lush wilderness of the Smoky Mountains. When she ends up stranded and soggy, she makes camp and hopes to avoid dangerous, wild animals. She should have been more worried about dangerous, wild humans, but she’s both alarmed and thrilled when Hanson Sykes, a fellow kayaker, happens upon her. He’s an experienced mountain man…and sexy as hell.

The sparks between them light up the uninhabited darkness, because survival in the mountains isn’t his only talent. He knows exactly how to touch her in ways that make her burn.

“You look like a mountain nymph who took a dip in the stream with that blonde hair all wild and your”—he swallowed—”clothes all plastered to your skin. Stunning.”

He caressed my hair, running his hand through the strands just over my ear.
My breath caught again, my heart picking up speed. I didn’t feel stunning—stunningly stupid maybe—standing half-naked and wet in his jacket, my hair drying into a long, frizzy mangle. I let out a nervous laugh. “What could possibly be stunning?”

“Your lips. You have luscious lips. They’re pouty, almost swollen, like you’ve been kissed.” He ran one finger lightly over my bottom lip, a touch so feathery it tickled. “I want to kiss you, Jae. I know that’s crazy.”

My lips parted, and a half-sigh came out. I wrapped my fingers around his wrist, felt the tendons in his arm strung tight. I deserved one kiss, didn’t I? After surviving my near-drowning, I deserved a man as delicious looking as him kissing me senseless in the starlight. “Kiss me, Hanson.”

About the Author: Marin has the mountains in her blood, heart, and soul. Her favorite romances would include an untamed setting (maybe an Irish ruin), a historical love affair (especially if there’s a ghost), or just a bad boy with a good heart.

She loves to spend time with her son, hike, travel to wild and remote places, read, and camp in insanely crowded campgrounds—so she can burn all the food, keep the neighbors up all night with her campfire, and dream about what her characters will do next. At home, she loves to create new characters and their worlds, and is a freelance editor too.
