Can a husband and wife cope when one of their favourite sexual pastimes is taken away from them?

Tristan and Jayme are not only devoted husband and wife, they are also Dominant and submissive, with a particular penchant for spanking. They’ve been playing delicious kinky games for the fifteen years they’ve been together, and couldn’t be happier. However, when Tristan develops a health issue that means he can’t redden his wife’s backside for a while, it puts them under a lot of strain. It’s a big part of their sex life, and they’ll miss it badly.

They try to find a way around their unfortunate predicament, but in the end, Tristan declares he will either spank Jayme’s bottom properly, or not at all.

The prospect of no spanking at all dismays Jayme, but she has no other choice. Or does she? She continues to put her mind towards the issue and she indulges in some solo experimentation, with mixed results.

But how will Tristan react when he finds out his wife has gone behind his back?

“You know what this fucking means, don’t you?” Tristan snapped, slamming his car keys onto the hall’s side table and storming into the kitchen.

Jayme hurried after him, her heart racing. Tristan rarely got angry—sure, he often pretended she’d done something wrong and faked being pissed off about it when they played D/s scenes, but real anger—it was something that just didn’t happen. She wasn’t quite sure what had sparked it, either. The news had been unfortunate, yes. Inconvenient, yes—but it wasn’t the end of the world. Tristan’s only choice was to follow the doctor’s advice.

“Um, I take it you mean aside from the obvious?” she ventured quietly, not wanting to piss him off even more.

“Yes,” he said on a heavy sigh, making it clear his anger and frustration weren’t aimed at her. “Come here, you.” He held out his arms, and when she went into them, he hugged her tightly and kissed the top of her head. “Fucking hell, Jayme, I’m really going to miss spanking that beautiful arse of yours.”

“And I’m going to miss you doing it,” she murmured into his chest. Then, pulling back so she could make eye contact, continued, “But we’ll cope. There’s loads of other stuff we can do—we can still have fun. As much as I love it, it’s not worth making the problem worse, or screwing up your recovery once you’ve had the op. Your health is more important, babe.”

“Mmm…” came the reply, along with a very displeased expression.

“Hey,” Jayme said sharply, raising her eyebrows, “you might be in charge in the bedroom, mister, but I’m putting my foot down here. Hopefully you’ll get a date through for the operation really soon. And the sooner you have the op, the sooner you’ll be recovered and we can get back to normal. In the meantime,” she grinned widely, “we’ll just have to get creative, won’t we?”

Much to Jayme’s relief, Tristan finally smiled. “You’re right, as always, wife of mine. Clearly I’m not happy about this—fucking carpal tunnel bollocks, spoiling all our fun—but it could be a lot worse, I suppose. At least they’re not operating on my dick.”

“True.” She giggled. “That would take some creativity of epic proportions!”

“It would. So, does this mean we have to have sex more often, then?”

Frowning, Jayme replied, “How do you figure that out?”

“Well, if it’s too risky to spank you, then surely wanking is going to be bad for my wrist, too. And I’m not sure that when the doctor asked if we had any questions, he meant of this nature, did he?”

Jayme laughed again. “No, I’m sure he didn’t. I think we’d have given the poor man a heart attack if we’d started asking him how we were going to get on with our particular kind of sex life without exacerbating your problem. And I was under the impression we already had plenty of sex and that you don’t feel the need to toss yourself off very often.”

“I don’t.” He shrugged. “But you can’t blame a man for trying, can you? Especially when that man’s wife looks like you.”

“No, I suppose not.” She grinned, then slipped her arms around the back of his neck and pulled him in for a kiss. Closing her eyes, Jayme allowed herself to get into the touching of their lips, the parting, the questing tongues, shoving all thoughts of not being able to have her arse reddened to the recesses of her mind. She loved Tristan with all her heart, and their relationship was so much more than sex and kink, so they’d just have to get on with it.

And what better way to get on with it than to find a way around their unfortunate predicament? She pulled Tristan’s bottom lip into her mouth, then sucked and nibbled at it, enjoying the guttural sounds this elicited from his throat. Letting go of his lip, she then sucked at his tongue, mimicking fellatio on the warm, wet flesh and smirking to herself as his rapidly growing erection pressed against her stomach.

God, yes. The two of them had been together fifteen years, married for thirteen, and were still crazy about each other. What was a little break from spanking in the scheme of things?

Sitting back suddenly as something occurred to her, she said, “Hey, gorgeous. Shall we take this to the bedroom? I’ve had an idea.”

Tristan grabbed her hand and they immediately headed for the bedroom. “Of course. What’s your idea, sweetheart?”

“Well, now,” she replied, grinning wickedly, “that would be telling, wouldn’t it? You’ll just have to wait.”

“Damn,” Tristan muttered, picking up his pace. “I can’t even threaten to punish you unless you tell me.”

“We’ll see.”

After throwing a confused look over his shoulder, he led them up the stairs and into their room before ushering her in and closing the door behind them. “God, you’re gorgeous,” he said, pulling her back into his arms.

“Now, now,” she replied, pushing his chest and wagging a finger at him. “No trying to butter me up just so I’ll cave and tell you what I have in mind.”

Adopting a mock-shocked expression, he said, “Moi? Would I do such a thing?”

“Yes! You bloody would!”

“Yeah, yeah, all right, all right. I totally bloody would. But that doesn’t mean it’s not true. You are gorgeous, and I love you. And I want you.” Gesturing towards the erection that tented his jeans, he gave a wry grin.

“And you’ll have me,” Jayme shot back matter of factly, beginning to remove her clothes. “Now, Sir, could I respectfully ask that you get naked?”

The bars along the canal were busy for a Sunday evening. People sat at the outside tables, laughing and drinking. From the corner of his eye, he clocked that someone had recognized him and was moving in his direction. Harry tucked his chin and kept walking. He wanted to reach his room, lock the door and spend some quality time alone.

When a hand touched his shoulder, he expected it to be a fan, eager for a photograph. He turned, hoping to make it quick, and was surprised to recognize the smiling face that greeted him.

Grant Hunter.

My God, he’s handsome. Up close, his chiseled features and warm brown eyes were exquisite. His smile grew wider and his eyes sparkled with amusement.

“I thought it was you,” Grant said, thrusting a hand forward. “Nice to meet you at last.”

“It wasn’t really your scene, was it?” Grant asked.

“I guess not. But sorry, again, I should have come over before I left. It was rude not to.”

“Why don’t you make it up to me now?” Grant said, gesturing to the bar where they had stopped. “A drink. I’ve got nothing else to do right now. How about you?”

The man was a natural flirt. That was obvious. But he had an undefinable and powerful charisma. Harry’s heart beat faster. Grant had an instant effect on him. “Why not?”

Can an independent, successful designer learn to trust her heart with the one man who crushed it twelve years ago?

Returning home to the Oregon town of Graciella after twelve years away, international real-estate guru Turner Brockman intends to make amends for having disappeared, then vanish again. He didn’t plan on meeting a figure from the past he tried to escape—beautiful Lily Moreno, now all grown up and the independent creative owner of Dragonfly Design & Construction.

Lily never expected to see Turner again and she’s determined to hide the love she’s felt for him since she was a girl, when he crushed her heart and killed her trust in men. Creating and owning the top construction company on the West Coast and being there for her friends and family are Lily’s only desires now. Except…there’s an intense chemistry between her and Turner, one she gives in to, only to harden her heart after every encounter.

Welcomed back into the beauty of Graciella and the family farm with loving open arms, Turner falls quickly for Lily, but faces his greatest challenge yet—seducing Lily into trusting him completely. Will his intense love, patience and good old-fashioned wooing be enough to capture his dragonfly’s heart?

No. No. No! It can’t be. Not here. Not now. Not ever. She slammed the wood to the ground and sucked in a breath. Turner Brockman in the flesh. Lily ripped out her earbuds, her music replaced with a shadow from the past.

“I’ll second that,” he said, rubbing his shoulder. She followed the motion of his arm. She’d smacked him with her two by fours. Appropriate. His voice was deeper, but, even with his pissy tone, she’d recognize the sound anywhere.

“I didn’t see you…” No one’s seen you in twelve years. Her heart hovered and fluttered in recognition. Oh, no you don’t, you traitor. We do not love him anymore.

“See me? What about hear me?” he said, his voice edged with cold annoyance. “You left your truck blocking the road. I honked at you, twice. What kind of an idiot leaves his truck in the middle of the street full of lumber in broad daylight?”

Lily’s shock and surprise flipped over into anger. Idiot? Honked at me? ‘His’ truck? Oh, hell no! She wasn’t prepared for his return. She’d told herself he never would. It was the only way to exist, to move on once she’d picked up the shattered pieces of her young heart. Oh, how naïve she’d been. Thank goodness she’d grown up.

He stood there lecturing and thinking she was a man. Why had she ever fallen for him? Jesus, he didn’t even recognize her. She’d often wondered what kind of an impression she’d made on him. Now she knew—absolutely none. The jerk he’d been as a teenager seemed to have exploded into its full identity. And he was in her face. Great! Just fricking great!

Memeing It by Tia Fielding – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Tia Fielding who is visiting with us to celebrate today’s release of Thirteen, book 3 in her Love By Numbers series.

Memeing It

I recently saw this meme that went something like this:

If you had to explain yourself based on three of your favorite TV shows, which ones would they be?

For the purpose of this blog post, I’m going to tell you three of my favorite shows of all time, and why exactly they are my favorites or, maybe explain something about who I am as a person.

The first one is called Lie to Me. It ran for three seasons (2009-2011) but I only found it a few years after it had already ended.

Wikipedia says: In the show, Dr. Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) and his colleagues in The Lightman Group accept assignments from third parties (commonly local and federal law enforcement), and assist in investigations, reaching the truth through applied psychology: interpreting microexpressions, through the Facial Action Coding System, and body language.

Why does this call to me? Well I’m very interested in what makes people tick. I also enjoy shows about sarcastic smart people which Dr. Lightman definitely is (House MD, anyone?) But I learned so much from this show! Not only has it amazing acting and great storylines, each episode was well thought out and written, and like I said, you learn a lot watching it. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Second show is Queer as Folk (US version, ran 2000-2005) and this is one of the shows I own on DVD (even though I don’t have any way to actually play the discs anymore…)

Wikipedia says: Based on the British series of the same name created by Russell T Davies, Queer as Folk was the first hour-long drama on American television to portray the lives of homosexual men and women.

Why does it call to me? Brian. Kinney. Okay, okay, so maybe Gale Harold’s character is one of my favorite ones ever (for many reasons) but he’s not The Reason for my love of QaF.

This show has great characters that seem realistic. The storylines are interesting, the writing, once again, is incredible, and well, it’s also plain hot. There’s a lot of sex, which at the original time the show aired was pretty scandalous but isn’t actually that racy on today’s standards.

There’s also the original, UK version of QaF which I never got into, and it has a young Charlie Hunnam in it.

I recommend the US version of Queer as Folk to everyone who loves gay romance. You won’t be disappointed.

Third, and newest, of my favorite shows is 9-1-1 (2018-).

Wikipedia says: The series follows the lives of Los Angeles first responders: police officers, paramedics, firefighters and dispatchers.

More to the point, if you’re looking for a place that would diligently take care of all your problems, A-Vascular might be your grandma! Today the women that ride aren’t all young and wild. buy viagra in australia It really is an amazing drug when soft tab viagra you think about it. The research tadalafil 20mg into adaptogens grows and several of the ingredients used in VigRX plus which acts as an aphrodisiac because it is mild in potency. This document 25mg barato viagra does not contain all possible drug interactions. Why it calls to me: Two words: brilliant writing. You know that thing where you watch a show and they hint at say, a romance between unlikely characters (I’m looking at you, otherwise-one-of-my-top-five-shows-of-all-time, Criminal Minds…) and it never happens. Or there’s something else that could be potentially controversial and they hint at it but bail at the last moment?

Not this show. I won’t spoil any of it for you, because there are things that you need to experience yourself for sure, but just know this: 9-1-1 never really takes the easy way out.
Sure, there’s the usual action and the showy things that go with series like this, but even those are somehow better and definitely more exciting than in some of the more tired-feeling shows.

One notable thing is, that in 2020, we got a spin-off series, 9-1-1: Lone Star that’s set in Austin, TX, and has a very diverse cast of characters. The original series is diverse already, but Lone Star amps that up a notch, writes the reason for such a cast into the story itself, and that makes it awesome. We’re only a handful of episodes in with Lone Star, but it’s already shaping up to be a delightful addition to the 9-1-1 family.

So final conclusion? I like good writing. I like interestingly written characters, follow through, and realism. Even when it’s embellished for entertainment purposes, it’s realism that sells things for me.

What are some of your favorite shows?

After working as a beat cop in big cities, deputy Mark Forrest has finally found a home away from his abusive parents in the tiny town of Acker, Wisconsin. His life is mostly quiet and peaceful, but also a little bit lonely from staying in his self-imposed closet. Raised in a toxic household, Mark grew up hating himself and doesn’t know any other way. After upsetting half of Acker and the LGBTQ community living there, Mark has felt even worse. He’s not that hateful, prejudiced guy, but how would anyone believe him, when he’s hiding who he is?

Nurse Francis Archer loves his job at a maternity clinic. He’s been through a lot, having grown up gay among the AIDS crisis. When he rejects the advances from a colleague and the man accuses him of sexual misconduct, Francis decides to cut his losses and run away to his old friends in Wisconsin. On the way there, he hooks up with an intriguing younger man who ends up being everything Francis thought he was, and so much more.

Meeting Mark again in Acker comes as a shock, but the two men can’t deny the chemistry between them. Mark craves being able to let go, and Francis loves to take him out of his head, but things aren’t quite that simple. Mark’s internalized homophobia and inability to stand up to his family make things rough, and Francis’s job as a live-in nurse for an elderly couple won’t last forever, given his patients’ declining health.

With the friends and found family they have in Acker and some welcome visitors from New Jersey, they might just have the help they need with figuring out what’s truly important.

Trigger Warning: Abusive language, homophobia, vague descriptions of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

The rubber soles of Phoebe’s taupe-colored work boots squeaked against the golden cinnamon hardwood floor. Daisy’s paws clicked as she trotted beside her. Phoebe would have to trim Daisy’s nails again. The plantation itself was in sad disarray after decades of neglect. In some ways, the plantation was strangely like her life—or at least the way it had been, until she made the commitment to fix it. For the last thirty years, this place had stood vacant and unloved. The previous owners had been unable to sell the property and unable to invest in her upkeep. This grand old lady had become a dilapidated ruin of a bygone era.

Phoebe hoped to fix this place up, just like she had her life. She believed, with a bit of elbow grease, she would be able to turn the plantation back into a showpiece—one for which people would pay for the experience of staying there. New Orleans and the surrounding area was a pre-eminent tourist destination that Phoebe planned to capitalize on.

She eventually wanted her own airport shuttle for guests. But that was getting ahead of herself. The first step was a complete renovation.

It was only recently that Phoebe had been able to actualize her dream of owning Riverland to renovate it into a fully operational bed and breakfast. She’d used the inheritance her late grandpa, Ralph Mackenzie, had bequeathed her in his will a year ago. The tidy sum he’d left her had been enough to buy this place outright, along with the small acreage surrounding the old plantation, with money left over for the needed renovations.

Financially, it would be tight at first until she started having paying guests. That was why she waited tables at the strip joint Bayou Sin on Bourbon Street in the meantime. Not because she loved wearing skintight clothes with men trying to grope her, but it helped supplement her income.

This plantation was infused with all her hope for the future, one that belonged to her and her alone.

As she reached what had once been a grand entrance, with its heavy, double oak doors the same warm cinnamon as the floors, she drew the right-side door open, a greeting on her lips as she spread them in a fake smile like the one she wore serving drinks. Daisy’s whole body vibrated, her attention directed at the man on the opposite side of the door. The initial punch of fear disintegrated as she studied him and memories dulled by time and distance surfaced.

He was tall, a good six two, and built like a professional baseball player with broad shoulders and a head full of dark chestnut hair that was a few weeks past needing a trim. His button-down ivory dress shirt was rolled up to his elbows, leaving his tanned, brawny forearms bare. The shirt was tucked into a pair of well-worn blue jeans with a brown leather tool belt slung around his lean waist.

But it was the man’s eyes, artic blue, making her think of frost and snow, in the tan, slightly weathered face that caused a bell of recognition to sound through her and made her lips curl into a genuine smile.

“Graham? Graham Layton, is that really you? You’re the contractor Dante recommended?” Joy filtered into her voice as she stared at the blast from her past. It had been almost nineteen years since the night of the winter formal in high school. The night she had always considered one of the best of her life.

Interview and Giveaway: Heather Kinnane

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Heather Kinnane who is visiting with us today to celebrate the recent release of Truckie Needed. Ask Heather a question or leave a comment for her for a chance to win a copy of Erotic Writer Seeks Men, the first book in her Seeking Satisfaction series.

Heather told me that she’s been writing as long as she can remember and that it was always a childhood dream of hers to be published. Once she received her first contract, she started really considering herself an author.

“That was so exciting, and really confirmed for me that I could do this,” she said.

Truckie Needed was inspired by Kelly, a writing friend of Heather’s.

“I really wanted to write something new in my Seeking Satisfaction series, (which are all standalone books), but I was struggling to come up with any ideas, until Kelly made a suggestion, and here it is!” she exclaimed with a smile.

Heather has mostly been a pantser, writing by the seat of her pants with no plan in mind.

“In the past, this meant lots of editing as a re-read discovered huge plot holes and various issues with characters. Recently I’ve started plotting, just a little,” she explained, “and I find this gives me a good indication where there are plot holes that need to be filled, and how characters might need to be fleshed out a little.”

I asked her, “Who is your favorite author and why?”

“I don’t have one favorite author, and I’m not entirely sure how I would narrow it down to one either. Stories that I have absolutely loved include The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, as well as The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. One of my favourite romances is Skipping out on Henry by C L Ogilvie. I fully intend to read more novels by these authors (and all the others on my shelf), but there are so many good books out there, I find I flit from one to the other without much consideration as to who it’s been written by, and more focus on what the story’s about and whether it sounds like something I would read.”

Story is, in her opinion, the most important element of good writing.

“I think story ties everything together, the characters, the plot,” she told me. “If you can tell a good story you can get away with most things – often even grammar mistakes! (But not spelling, if a book is full of spelling mistakes I just can’t read it).”

“How do you come up with your titles?” I asked.

“Titles are always tricky for me! Mostly my titles come from my writers group lol! On saying that, the title of Truckie Needed was easy, because of the series it’s part of. All the books in my Seeking Satisfaction series have something about seeking or wanting or needing in the title.”

The hardest part about writing for her is editing – she told me that it’s definitely the area she struggles with the most.

“It’s so much easier to write when the words are flowing, and so much harder to go back and beat it into shape,” she assured me.

I wondered, “What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book?”

“Hmm… tricky. I think perhaps it was while I was writing this book. It’s a bit gruesome too, so for those who don’t want to read anything like that, feel free to skip this! I was following the road where my characters travel, looking for interesting tid-bits to include in the story, when I came upon the story of a series of murders in a town called ‘Snowtown’ in South Australia. The poor victims bodies were stuffed into barrels and left in an abandoned bank vault.”

“Could you ever co author a book with someone?” I asked. “If so, who would you choose, and what would you write?”

“If you’d asked me this twelve months ago I would’ve said no way, but I’ve been thinking about this recently actually. I don’t know whether I could or not, but it would be interesting to try! As to what I’d write… hmmm. I don’t know that either. But I’ve read that some of the easiest ways to co-author is to have one person write in the POV of one character, and the other person write from the POV of another character, so that maybe a romance where I write one character and another writer writes the love interest might be a good way to start.”

Finally I asked, “What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?”

“Best: Just keep writing! Worst: You must never do XYZ. In this case XYZ covers a whole bunch of different things I’ve been told I shouldn’t do, only to have a different person tell me ‘make sure you do XYZ’. (Actually, now I say all that, I think the best advice is, there are no rules.)”

Mattie has bought a tiny house, intending to drive it across the country to land she’s bought interstate. But Mattie doesn’t take into
account the fact that the tiny house is on the back of a truck, and she doesn’t have her truck license.

What to do? An ad in the local pub brings Ned and Jack into her life — two very eager and sexy young men who’ve been travelling around Australia and are more than happy to drive Mattie and her tiny house across the continent.

They might be leaving Western Australia’s deserts behind and heading to the chilly island state of Tasmania, where even in spring there is still snow on the mountains, but inside the tiny house, things are only heating up.

About the Author: I am the author of the romantic fantasy series, ‘A Faery Dream’, and the steamy menage series ‘Seeking Satisfaction’. I also write short stories, the shortest of which have been published at The Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette (many of which you can find in my flash-fiction collection – ‘The Pittsburgh Collection’). I live in the Australian bush with my husband, children and pets. When I’m not writing I’m usually avoiding the housework by reading, gardening, or soaking up the natural world.

Five of my Favorite Audiobooks by Sue Brown – Guest Blog

Long and Short Reviews welcomes Sue Brown who is visiting with us to celebrate the recent release of Last Place at the Chalet.

*****

Happy New Year from me.

I hope you had a wonderful festive period, however you celebrate.

I’ve been reading a storm this year, but I’ve also become a huge fan of audiobooks. I love being able to listen while I work or walk the dog. I’ve even got more chance of cleaning if I’m listening to a story. My five things are books in my genre, but audiobooks.

You’ll see a common theme in these books. I’m a crime/FBI/feds stories addict. My first genre I loved as a teenager and nothing has changed except now it’s two guys instead of a hero cop and a bit-part girlfriend, and a romance that doesn’t stop at the bedroom door. It’s really hard to pick just five, so I just picked five at random from my favourites.

I think the series I listen to most is the Marshals series by Mary Calmes. Tristan James is one of my favourite narrators as you will see. I adore reading the series, but somehow listening to it brings all the characters to life and I’m a sucker for an Irish-American accent. I love all the characters in this series and although I could probably quote most of it by heart, this series keeps me company on many a dog walk.

I love all of Josh Lanyon’s books, but Snowball in Hell is a one-off. Narrated by Alexander Masters, it’s a gritty tale from the 1940s, a favourite period of mine. It has a tension that doesn’t always come with contemporary books. The first time I listened to it, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Even now after many listens, I ache for the characters.

Pretty Pretty Boys by Gregory Ashe and narrated by Tristan James is a new one for me. My office-buddy, Clare London, has been trying to get me to read the Hazard and SomersetNothing Special by A.E. Via, narrated by Aiden Snow. I’ve only listened to the first book but I definitely want to get the rest in the series. It’s good to have a new cop partnership to fall in love with. I do love my guys to have complex backgrounds.

Finally, I picked Bone to Pick by TA Moore and narrated by Michael Fell, because it has my favourite combo, K9/Cop/FBI agent. OMG, great story and a dog too. This makes me so happy. The only thing that frustrates me is waiting for the next one to come out on audiobook.

As I ought to mention my own new release, Last Place in the Chalet, I leave you with a cocktail recipe, courtesy of Charlie, the host of the Last Pine chalet.

Noel Garrett leaves for his Christmas vacation with an engagement ring in his pocket. But he boards the plane alone and with a broken heart when his boyfriend dumps him in the airport.

His seatmate, Angel Marinelli, takes care of him with gentle determination… whether Noel wants it or not, and Noel doesn’t expect to see Angel again. But when an overbooking leaves Angel without a room and Noel is asked to host him, one night turns into the whole vacation and they settle into the chalet and mix with an eclectic group of guests, including the Wise Guys and a pregnant woman. As they ski and spend every moment together, Noel finds himself falling for Angel, and though his feelings are returned, Noel worries it’s just a rebound romance. It’ll mean taking a leap of faith, but Noel has to make a decision before he hurts Angel, and Christmas is fast approaching.

Noel received another nudge when the refreshment trolley arrived. He shook his head. He was tempted to ask for a whiskey, but it was eight in the morning and drinking on an empty stomach was just going to make him sick. His companion asked for a coffee and a bottle of water.

“Which would you like?” the man said, disturbing Noel’s thoughts again.

He hoped it wasn’t going to be like this throughout the flight. He just wanted to be left alone to wallow in his misery. The guy obviously expected an answer, but Noel had forgotten the question.

“What did you say?”

“Coffee or water?”

“I don’t—”

“You need to drink. Which one?” For a man who was twenty if he was a day, he was very insistent.

“I’d rather have a whiskey,” Noel muttered.

“You don’t need any more alcohol.”

Noel stared at him. “Any more?”

“Your hands are shaking already,” the man said.

Noel stared at his hands. They were trembling, and he resisted the temptation to hide them away from the too-knowing eyes.

“I’m not drunk.” Noel gave a harsh laugh. “I wish I were.” He received a skeptical look and then another question.

Noel wished the guy would just leave him alone. He didn’t have the patience for twenty questions. “Not ill. Not drunk.”

“Then—?”

“Dumped, okay? My boyfriend dumped me at the airport.” His throat closed around the painful words and he looked away to avoid the pity in the wide green eyes.

The man squeezed Noel’s forearm. “I’m so sorry.”

“Me too.”

“Here.”

He handed Noel the takeout cup of coffee. “I don’t want—”

“Drink it.” The man almost growled at him.

Noel sipped at it. It was black and bitter and disgusting. Noel liked his coffee half full of creamer and sugar. But the shock of the bitter taste grounded him in a way he hadn’t expected.

The man watched him shrewdly. “Feeling better?”

“Yes.” Noel sighed. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome. My name’s Angelo Marinelli. Everyone calls me Angel.”

It was kind of appropriate. With his blond curls and sweet face, he looked angelic.

“Noel Garrett.”

They shook hands awkwardly around the cup of coffee.

“Do you want another one or the water?” Angel proffered the bottle.

Noel shook his head. “I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not, but you will be.”

“How can you know that?” Noel asked bitterly.

“Because you’re hurting now, but it won’t last.”

Angel’s gentle smile eased the hurt in Noel just a fraction.

“You think so?”

“I know so,” Angel said, his tone so confident it drew an involuntary smile from Noel.

“You seem too young to know about broken hearts.”

Angel’s smile turned wry. “It’s the blond curls and the altar-boy appearance, isn’t it?”

Tinsel or Garland… (Or How I Learned the Difference Between the Two)

When I was a kid and we set up the Christmas tree, first, my mother would always plug the little arms into the slots on the tree and grumble about how the tree looked fake. You should know, you’re supposed to fluff the branches of those fake trees, but she’d leave them flat like they were in the box. Our tree had a sort of shelf look. It was always odd, but I never thought it was until I got older and saw other trees.

Okay, so what does that have to do with tinsel or garland? When I was a kid, we heard the horrors of tinsel. Not the garland, but the stringy stuff that’s sort of draped on the tree. It doesn’t have a cord to hold it together. But my parents referred to that tinsel as the horrible drapey stuff. I know. It’s a technical term. The garland my mother insisted needed to be on the tree was called tinsel. So I thought that’s what it was.

Fast-forward to when I met DH. His parents put the stringy drapey stuff on the tree AND they used garland. I said, oh, you’ve put on tinsel. They looked at me like I’d stepped off a space ship. Tinsel is the stuff that is thrown on the tree and garland is the stuff on the cord. (Ours never looked as flashy as the one in the photo, but I can’t find a photo of our last Christmas tree.)

Now, I’ve heard the horrors of using tinsel—the drapey stuff. I have cats and dogs and both like to try to eat the tinsel. It doesn’t go low on the tree and sometimes doesn’t go on it at all. Garland seems to be preferred because it’s on the cord. Guess what? The dogs and cats still try to eat it. (And yes, I know the perils of them eating any of it.)

So I ask you, what’s your preference? I like the look of tinsel, but also garland. I’m rather fond of garland made of pearls. What’s your preference?

Winter Blogfest: Jaime Samms

This post is part of Long and Short Reviews’ Winter Blogfest. Leave a comment for a chance to win a  copy of Still Life, and of my more recent Christmas title, Eugene and the Box of Nails to a commenter at the end of the Holiday Tour. Just comment on my post what you remember most about the winter/not hot and dry season growing up.

Snow Days

This year we have had serious snow exactly twice.

The kids have had two snow days.

I’m not even talking a foot of snow and blizzard conditions. I’m just talking about a snowfall that left more than an inch of fluff on the ground. Lots of people will say a few inches is enough to shut their city down, but we live in Canada. I mean. Come on.

I remember wading in snow up to my waist to get to the bus stop, and the bus still came. I remember laughing our heads off as we dove off the side of the road as the snowplough went by. There were snow forts during the March break, because there had been enough snow over the season, we still had enough to BUILD FORTS. In MARCH.

I remember moving back up to my home town after a few years living farther south, and it snowed on November 9, my eldest child’s first snowfall, and I thought—oh yes. I remember this.

And now our schools don’t bother with school because it snowed last night.

Tell them that it is more important to eat ginger. cialis 5mg sale Even though it would not have an impact on sexual interest allied viagra generika recommended for you to person. Up to our chest in the snow in the dark, on foot, five miles. Uphill. Both ways.

There are so many things we used to do as kids that parents these days only imagine with horror, and I don’t know how I feel about that, really. I just know that sometimes, living only happens when you DO things. Take chances, push past easy.

Which idea happens to dovetail quite nicely with an oldie but goodie holiday story I wrote in the way back, Still Life.

Mac has been living on the edge a long time, out in the world on his own, but the real risk is when he comes back and asks Allan for a second chance.

When Allan Song’s ex, Mac, shows up to model for the life drawing class Allan teaches, he turns everything upside-down. Mac is still as infuriatingly attractive as when Allan first met him—and still trying to figure out where he fits on the gender spectrum. He’s more than a little out of control, and he’s taken some stupid risks that have come back to haunt him. If they’re going to get back together, Allan wants a real relationship—but for that, he and Mac will need to look below the surface.

Jaime Samms is a plaid-hearted Canadian who spends the too-long winters writing stories about love between men and the too-short summers digging in the garden. There are dust bunnies in the corners of her house—which she blames on a husky named Kai. There are dishes on the counter—which is clearly because teenagers! There is hot coffee in the pot and the occasional meal to keep her from starving—because her husband is remarkable and patient.

A multipublished author whose work has been translated into French, Italian, and German, Jaime delights in the intricate dance of words that leads her through tales of the lost and brokenhearted men she writes about to the love stories that find and mend them.

And when the muse is being stubborn, she also makes pretty things with yarn and fabric scraps because in her world, no heart is too broken to love, and nothing is too worn or tired it can’t be upcycled into something beautiful. All it takes is determination and the ability to see life a little bit left of center.
