Mr. Banis’ use of the extremely isolated location and poor weather conditions lends an eerie quality to this tale that drastically heightens the suspense. In some ways the setting is actually scarier than anything else the characters experience because the fog obstructs their view so completely. It’s extremely hard to know where you’re going in a thick, unrelenting fog, after all.

Willow, Weep is a solid horror tale that I would recommend to anyone who likes to be frightened but isn’t interested in the explicit violence that is so common in this genre.

Based on what the reader learns about Kayla’s past I’m not entirely sure if this was meant to be a clue about what is happening in her life, but I think a strong argument can be made for this interpretation.

The pacing in this story is superb. I had a knot of dread in my stomach from the very first scene, and the conversation between Kayla and Ben only made me more anxious to find out what happens next. Sleep clinics aren’t inherently scary places, but Mr. Dowell teases out everything unknown about this sort of experience in order to make the setting as unnerving as possible.

Nightlight sent a chill down my spine. This is a great introduction to horror for anyone who is unfamiliar to the genre, although I’d recommend it just as highly to long-term fans. There is something terrifying here for everyone!

While the first few chapters set up everything the reader needs to know about how people in Maya’s society are reacting to this dangerous new disease, explaining all of the ways in which they are pretending that everything is ok does slow down the action in the beginning. I would have preferred to spend more time figuring out some plot holes that develop later on. The narrator’s understanding of why they occur is fairly fuzzy, and I never did fully understand the logic behind certain twists in the narrative.

The chilling premise makes up for the inconsistencies in the plot, especially when it focuses on how society at large responds to such a virulent illness. The Tearings sound like a disease cooked up in Stephen King’s laboratory, and Ms. Repetto’s graphic descriptions of how it affects the human body make my skin crawl.

The Tearings is a chilling dystopian novel that I’d recommend to adult and young adult readers alike. This is a great choice for anyone who feels a tickle in their throat as cold and flu season begins. Remember that it’s probably just a harmless cold. Probably.

I never would have guessed that watching him kill zombies is a good way to get to know him, yet I learned the most about his personality, habits, and values by seeing how he reacts in life-threatening situations. It was fascinating to peel back the emotional layers of a quiet, lonely, grieving man who hasn’t so much as caught a glimpse of another human being in a very long time.

The myriad of ways in which living in constant fear and total isolation grind down one’s spirit bleeds through the author’s crisp, economical prose. In a story of this length space is at a premium. The author packs atmosphere and character development into every sentence, and he accomplishes this so unobtrusively that I unwittingly absorbed an incredibly complex understanding of Tim’s backstory as well as a solid mental map of the physical places he visits within a dozen pages.

What surprised me even more was how much I looked forward to further flashbacks. They pop up at precisely the right times and answer the questions I had about how Tim came to survive his initial attack. The idea of anyone being bitten by a zombie and living to tell about it was what initially drew me to this tale. Even though the blurb reassured me that he would survive that injury I was still perched on the edge of my seat for all of the flashbacks that involve that slice of Tim’s life. The tension in them was deliciously unbearable,and the author’s execution of Tim’s initial reaction to the bite was completely appropriate for the character traits the protagonist demonstrates again later on in the plot.

Mr. Felkel left me yearning for more. While all of the loose threads are wrapped up more than satisfactorily, I went to bed last night wondering what happens to Tim after the final scene. I felt like I had said goodbye to a new friend, and I wished there was a way for me to keep in touch with him.

Carrier is a must-read for anyone who loves horror or zombie tales. This is a book I couldn’t put down, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

The inclusion of such a large cast of characters for what is a fairly short full length novel occasionally results in backstories that are hastily sketched out. In most cases I was able to infer the rest of their stories based on how particular characters acted later on, but it would have been nice to have my hunches officially confirmed or denied in a few cases.

Pearl is eight when this story takes place, but due to the violent manners in which some of the spirits she meets have died I am recommending it for high school students on up. While nothing is described in particularly gruesome terms there are extremely emotionally intense scenes involving the lives and deaths of these spirits. These scenes are quite well written, but due to the dark themes they introduce as well as the inclusion of certain tropes from the horror genre I’m not comfortable recommending this book to younger audiences.

What I appreciate most about this tale is how vividly the author describes the world in which Pearl and her family live. The tranquility of the rural and suburban settings provides a thin veneer of respectability for a family slowly coming apart at the seams. Ghost stories work best when the reader honestly believes that the characters he or she have grown to care about are in terrible danger, and Ms. Hones did a great job at keeping me on my toes from beginning to end.

Spirit Eyes is a heart-pounding ghost story that I highly recommend to adult and teen readers alike.

I’ve been with the characters from the beginning of the book, and I know under the circumstances with gory monsters out to hunt, anyone can be killed. Without revealing too much, none of the characters I grew to cheer for survived.

The author has a great strength in creating both an engaging and complex setting which add depth and interest. However, I am still left with questions about the origin of the different type monsters. The novel’s main focus was on the humans and their fight to survive. With the variations of monsters I would have liked to read more about the monsters. The ‘After’ chapter was a good snippet into the minds of the Old One and the Night Flyer’s mother. I would have enjoyed more of the monsters view during the novel.

The Savage Species is a fitting title for the ferocious species that Janz has created in this series. If you are looking for a entertaining adrenaline powered read this will be a series you don’t want to miss.

Jesse dreams about his granddad, Eric flashes back to his youth. I’m not sure what these tangents have to do with the plot, but for me all the extra took away from the storyline. There is already a lot going on with the plot, and with such full action bloody scenes to throw in these added bland description back in time really slowed things down. Maybe the flashbacks have to do with the monsters, or the confinements of the arena tunnels? I am still reading to find out more information about the monsters. How this new breed came about? Why did the monsters seem to single out Charly’s son? Red Elk is really wearing out the porn talk. Several spots in this section of the novel really lost it’s fizz for me.

The author continues to give great descriptions of the scenes all while keeping the suspense going on. This is part four, but I have a feeling that something more sinister will appear. Yes, I’ve made it this far with Red Elk and his group in their fight for survival, I will continue on to read part five. Let the action continue!

Imagine trying to prevent others from doing something they don’t realize is extremely hazardous. Most of the people in Oliver’s world don’t realize that seeking out the spirit world is fraught with danger until they’ve invited something into their homes they can’t control. Oliver’s responses to these emergencies aren’t always graceful, but seeing him leap to action to save strangers made me wish his adventures would never end. The first chapter in particular was so intense that I couldn’t imagine where the author intended to take the plot once that scene ended. It was rewarding to see how quickly Oliver leaps from one case to the next as well as how he handles the elementals he meets who are not necessarily friendly beings.

This is a fast-paced, plot-centered novel that is far more concerned with how Oliver relates to the elementals than his personal development. While I was able to intuit a thought-provoking explanation for Oliver’s sometimes obsessive habits it would have been nice to have my theory clearly confirmed or disproven at some point. Had the author included a few additional scenes to explore and further develop Oliver’s idiosyncrasies I would have easily given this tale a Best Book rating.

The foreshadowing, atmosphere, and pacing were absolutely perfect for the sci-fi/fantasy and horror genres. Mr. Paulits knows exactly how to slowly build tension through the addition of small detail that in any other type of story could easily be brushed off as mere coincidence. I had not heard of this author before reading Oliver Muncing, Exorcist, but now that I’ve been introduced to him I can’t wait to read his back list.

If you love supernatural horror I highly recommend checking out Oliver, Muncing, Exorcist. It’s spooky atmosphere and diverse cast of otherworldly beings is an excellent tonic for anyone in the mood to be frightened.

Charly, Sam, Jesse and the others must do battle with the Children in the labyrinthine subterranean world that the creatures call home. The mystery continues to deepens in this arresting installment in the Savage Species series. Many of the survivors are confined to the dark caverns with the hideous man-eating monsters lurking near.

This series can be correlated with a roller coaster ride. Part one starts out as a slow incline, your heart rate picks up in speed due to the unknown fears that’s about to take place. Quickly, in part two you are taken to the peak of horror as you reach the highest point of the ride. Part three would be the decline into the lower part of the ride when your heart rate settles but only for a brief second. In part three the characters are all confined in the underground tunnel with no known way out… not that they even know if they’ll live to see the exit. The repulsive monsters are still on attack and their killing all that they come in contact with. Now the battles are up close and with limited lighting and weapons the monsters have the advantage.

The author uses their confinement in the tunnel to display the characters’ stories before the monsters invaded their lives. Each character seems to have a moment of flashbacks from their past. I’m not really sure how the flashbacks tie in with the plot but I’m sure it will be revealed soon. Just as with the voices in part two, it hadn’t been revealed yet but I think I have an idea what the author is leading up to. In the caves, not only are they fighting monsters but there are also a few personal heated confrontations between Charly and Eric, and also between Eric and Sam.

In part three, the author does reveal the legend of The Children. Don’t fret, Janz has a plot that is captivated and continues to pull it’s reader along in suspense. A new terror is introduced with the Night Flyers and they do just that…fly. A great ploy to insure the reader will advance to read part four. The author does a fantastic job in the detailed description of the action scenes and he has a vivid creative imagination that combines style and suspense.

This installment wasn’t my favorite of the three, however it did answer some questions and possibly reveals a new terror.

The Savage Species series continues to be a chilling suspenseful tale perfect for horror fans, but you might want to sleep with a nightlight available after reading.

Janz continues his awesome detailed description of the fight to get away from these mystery killer monsters.  For a bit, the shooting and killing seemed to go on forever, almost to the point of over doing it. Then finally they pack into a white Buick with monsters chasing behind them as they head to Red Elk’s place looking for a possible escape.

The story also continues with Sam and Charly both have made a plan to go look for Charly’s son. Eric Florence, Charly’s husband, sees Eric and Charly and decides to follow them.

Janz makes the reader feel as if they are actually in the middle of the terror. The second installment in the Savage Species series, The Children continues on to be a darkly intriguing mystery. It is a good read and Janz definitely has a talent for being creative and delivering an extremely visual setting, but I do have to point out a few things that I found irritating. In the mist of death, horror and running for their life they find time to discuss soft porn, and Emma’s push-up bra. I am not sure what is going on with Charly hearing her mother-in-law’s voice in her head and the same for Sam. He is hearing his dad’s voice in his head.

Be mindful the mystery won’t be resolved in this installment. I was left with questions as to where the blood thirsty monsters are from and why are they all of a sudden attacking? And will anyone survive this savage terror?  So you know what that means…..yes I will be starting the next portion of the series right away!
