Reviewed by PoinsettiaCan you give one guy your heart and another your soul?
The last thing eighteen-year-old Breena Cross needs in her life is more complications. It’s all she can do to balance studying, working, trying to keep her foster-sister safe and drooling over the new guy at work. But things go from complicated to crazy when a fit of rage ignites the dark magic inside her and she finds herself fending off the supernatural underworld.
Myles, Breena’s drool-worthy coworker and vampire convict, is carrying a load of secrets–one of which is that he’s fang-over-lip in love with Breena and in danger of violating the terms of his sentence.
Orin is a soul-hungry assassin sent to kill Breena. However, he takes one look into her eyes and sees his own lost humanity. For once thinking of someone other than himself, he chooses not to end her life, even though it means risking his own.
Despite a convict and an assassin fighting over her, all Breena wants is custody of her sister. But to do this, she will need help from both Myles and Orin. And if Breena doesn’t learn to control the darkness within, she could lose her sister…forever.
How much can Breena bear before she finally breaks down?
Breena has seen and experienced much more heartache than a young woman of eighteen ever should. She carries an enormous amount of weight on her shoulders every single day of her life. I have to give her credit for not only making it out of an abusive foster home but then going on to take college courses while working and supporting herself. Not only is she driven to make her life a success, but she’s determined to rescue her sister Jenny from the same abusive foster home she came out of by fighting to gain custody of Jenny. Breena’s drive to accomplish her goals is definitely amazing and to be commended. Though Breena seems to possess an almost inhuman amount of inner strength, she is still a very real and well rounded character. Though most of her life is centered on gaining custody of Jenny, she still has the typical feelings and desires of many young women. She wants to love and be loved.
As if all those issues weren’t enough, Breena must also face the realization that she isn’t exactly human. She has some interesting magical abilities that have put her on the radar of some very bad people. I think Breena handles the revelation of her supernatural nature very well considering how much she already has on her plate. However, a girl can only take so much. My heart ached for her when she had a few meltdowns. It just didn’t seem fair for someone so young to have to bear so much.
Breena has two love interests in this story, Myles and Orin, and her attraction to both guys feels genuine. I think it is hard to pull off a truly believable love triangle, but Ms. Bynum definitely accomplishes it in Witch Way to Turn. Myles is the mysterious and brooding vampire who has admired and protected Breena from a distance for years. Orin is the dangerous and self-confident assassin who is much more direct about his feelings for Breena. Both seem to truly care for Breena and would do anything for her. I definitely favor one guy over the other, but I truly wasn’t sure who Breena would choose until the end of the story.
Practically everyone seems to have a hidden agenda in this story. I couldn’t believe how many people were out to harm Breena or wanted to use her new found abilities for their own purposes. Breena finds herself in more than one terrifying situation that had me racing through the pages to see if she would be alright. All the different factions and plots are a lot to take in and while Breena and Jenny seem to be safe for now, I suspect they will be facing more danger in the future. I do have to warn readers that some of the situations Breena finds herself in contain strong language and graphic content that some people might find disturbing.
I really enjoyed reading Witch Way to Turn. I loved getting to know Breena and the love triangle she finds herself tangled in is compelling. Wondering who Breena will pick? There’s only one way to find out. Pick up a copy of Witch Way to Turn today.
