Reviewed by PeppermintGRYPHON—Honorable, loyal, dependable…tainted. He was the ultimate warrior before imprisonment in the Underworld changed him in ways he can’t ignore.
She calls to him. Come to me. You can’t resist. But Gryphon will not allow himself to be ruled by the insidious whispers in his head. And there’s only one way to stop them: kill Atalanta, the goddess who enslaved him. But with so much darkness inside, he can’t be sure what’s real anymore. Even the Eternal Guardians, those who protect the human realms and the gods, want to exile him.
Finding Malea is like a miracle. Somehow he doesn’t feel the pull of the dark when she’s near. And he’s determined to keep her as near as possible, whether she wants him close or not. But she’s a temptation that will test every bit of control he has left. One that may ultimately have the power to send him back to the Underworld…or free him from his chains for good.
There is nothing more tempting than a seductive voice calling to you at all times of the day. However, Gryphon will not be fooled by the voice in his head. He knows she has nothing to offer him except a slow and steady trip to crazy-ville. Therefore, he does the only thing he can to protect those he cares for: run away so he cannot hurt anyone but himself. Only he needs to help of the mysterious Malea who shares his darkness and may be the key to his freedom from not only the Colony but from the voice.
Gryphon was everything you could ask for in a warrior until his trip to the underworld changed him. He is only a shell of the man he use to be and that is just unacceptable. There is something inspiring about his actions of leaving his fellow warriors to try to protect them. I enjoyed the fact that he was trying to find his sanity and discovered his heart in the quest. I could tell that he was still a caring man deep under the frustration and aggravation, and I am glad that Malea was able to see it as well.
Malea was a character that grew on me. At first I didn’t really understand her. I didn’t have the luxury of reading the previous story, which would have probably provided me with more insight. Even without previous knowledge I can understand why Gryphon was so fixated on her. While she spent most of her life running you can see the strength in her decision. Forsaken by both her parents she has had no other options put to run most of her life. When she could have quit and given up she still tried to hardest to survive on her own and not involve others. The mystery surrounding her added intrigue to the story and made me want to learn more. Once I learned more about her I knew she would play an important role in not only this story but in the series.
The relationship development as well as the antagonistic conflicts really moved the story along at a steady pace. Malea and Gryphon had to deal with personal problems, a budding romance, and daemons, hellhounds and gods around every corner. There were many occasions when I told myself I would only read for five more minutes than the next thing I know another hour went by because I was so caught up in the story.
This is a series I can see myself enjoying for years to come, so I hope the author keeps the Eternal Guardians coming.
