Clay is a sheriff in a small town. He’s unhappy because his wife left him. We’re thrown right into the action of his job though, with a confusing mystery. Something doesn’t seem quite right. Clay investigates, and things just keep getting stranger than before.
The characters he comes across are a touch bizarre. The author of this story has done well creating an air of intrigue with these unusual people and circumstances that Clay runs into during his investigation. One things leads to another, and things escalate. It turns out this case Clay’s working on may be connected to something very dear to his heart. If he can figure things out, he may be able to improve his own life.
The setting and premise are interesting and well written. Occasionally, a person reacts in an annoying way, like falling for the same trick twice and running away before someone else can explain. However, the story overall carries suspense, and Clay himself is quite a likeable character. Obvious inspiration from popular children’s tales are seen woven into the pages of this story. Perhaps they are overly obvious, with the same tricks used, but they work in the context of this tale and have their own spin added to the mix. For a quick read that isn’t your typical thriller or mystery, readers might enjoy this story.
