When the king commands former war hero Captain Jay Ghair to find him the perfect royal sex slave, Jay’s quiet new life as a librarian is shattered. Jay discovers the boy he’s looking for in Alix, a lowly miner and wannabe court scientist, whom Jay can’t help but secretly adore. However, teaching the rebellious Alix to be a docile slave is difficult. Alix will behave for just one man, and it isn’t the king. It’s Jay.
Standing by while the king’s treatment of Alix becomes cruel is torturous for Jay. He longs to return to his library, yet he can’t bear to leave Alix, or his people, unprotected. To rescue Alix—and save the realm from the increasingly tyrannical king—Jay must confront the demons of his military past and take up the sword again. But his most important battle must be won through returning Alix’s love and learning to master this bad slave who submits only for him.
This story brings into a world of kings and magic. Jay was once the savior of the land but that was many years ago. Since he came home, he has chosen to hide away from the world in his library but when he is summoned to the castle by the king he finds a very different world than when he was last out in it. He finds a spoiled boy on the throne who cares more for his own selfish needs than those of his people and yet this is man he must obey. Jay is not happy to do this king’s bidding but he does and brings back a slave for his enjoyment. Alix is the man Jay finds for the king but as time goes on Jay may not be able to let Alix go. The two must find out just where their relationship stands even if it means death. Alix and Jay both find that they must make hard decisions that they must live with.
I enjoyed watching the relationship between Jay and Alix take shape. Jay has done his duty by finding a new slave for the king to play with but the torture he puts Alix through and the growing feelings that Jay has for Alix makes Jay confused and begin to question his beliefs. This story not only brings us Alix and Jay’s story but also one of a king’s choices and their consequences. Jay and Alix are both good men and seeing them find happiness in any way that they can made for a nice read. The two make a great couple showing that good men come in all shapes. Whether you are a king, a soldier or a miner it is what is inside you not what you have. This author does a good job of bringing the reader into the wondrous world that they created and keeps you entertained until the very end.
