Tis the Season to Get Lost!

Traditional snow covered log cabin in a holiday resort in Lapland, Finland.

Seriously. Lost in the reason for the season, that is.

I love Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m a traditionalist who believes Christmas decorations don’t go up until after Thanksgiving. I can watch Christmas movies or read Christmas stories any time of the year, but no decorations until after my turkey please!

Have you ever thought about running away from it all because Christmas has become to commercialized? I started feeling that way years ago and struggled with how to combat the stress. What I discovered was that I simply had to go back to the basics. Less of everything, meant more to the people I love and share the holidays with.

At one point I wanted to run away and hide in a cabin in the mountains. My vacation excuse to put off all the people wanting a piece of my time that only had twenty-four hours in it. It’s not possible to do everything, with everybody, and still enjoy the holidays. No, I didn’t run away, but I did put my foot down and started saying no. Yes, there were some ruffled feathers at first, but since then, everyone has become more reasonable.

The answer: make Thanksgiving and Christmas a season, not a day. It gives us a whole lot more time to get through the holiday rush and share in the joy and love that comes with my two favorite holidays of the year. There are lots of days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and New Year’s for that matter, to get together with people you love and to share in the joy of family and friends.

Writing this article, I’m thinking of the turkey and all the trimmings just around the corner. This year, my husband and I will be alone. It’s just the way it all worked out and it will be a first. So, in a way, it’s like being on cabin getaway in the mountains. (I live in a log cabin on a small mountain…lol) The family is spending time with other important people in theirs lives, and then they will all gather here on Christmas morning. A time when I’ll have all my grandchildren, children, spouses, mother, siblings, and friends.

And next year, it might be the opposite and they’ll all be here at Thanksgiving. And I’m okay with that. Everyone else’s extended family is just as important and deserve a chance to share in the holiday cheer without stressing out the ones we love by trying to make them spread themselves to thin. I like to think letting them go other places and not placing demands on their time, makes them realize how much I love them. I’m putting their needs first.

There’s always the days before or after each holiday to get together. Thanksgiving and Christmas are just two days designated to celebrate, but the real celebration is simply stopping to make time in our hectic lives to share in the reason for the season. Love and family. So, pick a day, any day, and share in the joy—not the stress.

Sam Wyatt goes to a cabin in Hallbrook each year at Christmas looking for solitude with the memories of his wife and daughter, who he lost in a car accident a few years ago. Except not long after he arrives, Megan Langley and her daughter take up residence and refuse to leave. A quick call to the rental agent and Sam finds out the cabin has been double booked and he’s kicked out to the snowy cold. But when an avalanche closes Tinsel Pass, he’s forced to return to the cabin.

Megan was supposed to spend this Christmas celebrating and honoring her mother at her favorite place this year. When one night housing Sam turns into more, Megan and Becca are resolved to get their Christmas spirit back. They keep Sam busy, giving him zero chance of finding the solitude he craves, especially when a stray dog comes around and Becca’s determined to help the mutt.

When the pass reopens, Sam is torn emotionally between the past and present. Can a little Christmas magic save him from making the wrong decision?

Christmas Breakfast

Holiday traditions have a strange way of sneaking up on families. Growing up we never had a huge Christmas dinner. Our tradition was to have a huge Christmas breakfast instead. After my parents divorced, my brother, sister and I spent Christmas morning with my mom and stepfather, then my Dad would pick us up for Christmas with his side of the family. My mom and my stepfather always made sure we had a huge Christmas breakfast, before we left.

Dad eventually moved away and we didn’t see him all that often. However, the Christmas tradition stuck and grew to become an event where friends and family (including my Dad’s mother) would come for a grand Christmas breakfast at our house.

Leading up to Christmas, the refrigerator would be stocked with dozens of eggs and packages of bacon and loaves of bread sat ready on the counter for French Toast. The house was full of people talking and the scents of all the different breakfast items being made and coffee. After breakfast was over and clean up was complete, the rest of the day was ours to do with as we wished. Play with toys or read books that we received.

My favorite food was the French Toast. The smell of it makes me think of Christmas. My stepfather made the most amazing French Toast. It was golden brown and he slathered it in butter and syrup before he handed it over. People would wait in line to get it hot off the griddle. Which leads me to my giveaway…

Top Ten Tuesday: Thankful Freebie

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday! Since Thanksgiving is just around the corner here in the US, this week’s topic is Thankful Freebie.  Here are some bookish people and things I’m thankful for.

Parents who encouraged reading-My parents read to me all the time when I was a child.  I can still remember sitting next to them as they read and re-read huge stacks of books to me.

A husband who tolerates my obsession with books-He might not completely understand it, but he puts up with my books taking up so much space in our house.

Kids who like to read-I love reading to my children, and having them has helped me rediscover how much fun children’s books can be!

Teachers who made reading fun-I was fortunate enough to have several teachers from elementary through college who continued to foster my love of reading.  I can vividly remember my fifth grade teacher setting aside time each day just to read to the class.  There were no quizzes or tests attached to the books.  It was just a time to enjoy sharing a story.

Friends who love reading-Several of my friends share my love of reading, and we swap book recommendations all the time.

Books in different formats-I love the feel and smell of a physical book.  There was a time when I thought I’d never warm up to ebooks.  However, most of the books I review here at Long and Short Reviews are in electronic form.  I’ve come to realize they are very convenient, and are a space saver when traveling.

Time to read-I have much less time to read than I used to, but I’m very thankful for the time I do have to read.

Bookstores-I have a wonderful bookstore in my town that sells new and used books.  I love browsing the shelves and discovering something new, or at least new to me!

What sort of bookish people or things are you thankful for?  Happy Thanksgiving!

Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Bookmarks

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  Today’s topic is favorite bookmarks.  When I was younger, any scrap of paper could be a bookmark.  I used to tear the top corner off my notebook page in school and use it as a bookmark.  Since then, I’ve collected a few bookmarks.  Most I picked up in various book stores, and a few were gifts from friends.  These are my favorites!

This is my absolute favorite book mark.  It reminds me of my favorite fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast.

Another pink rose book mark.

And just one more pink rose bookmark.

Top Ten Tuesday: Book Titles with Numbers In Them

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  This week’s challenge is Book Titles with Numbers In Them.  I decided to limit myself to books that I’ve reviewed during my time here at Long and Short Reviews.  This proved to be much more difficult than I thought it would be because I did not include volume/series numbers or ordinal numbers (first, second, etc).  I’ve been reviewing for over ten years and I only found ten books with numbers in them!  I had to go pretty far back in my reviews to find these.  Titles are linked to Goodreads.

Nine Elms by Robert Bryndza-I just read this and if you like a thriller/mystery, you might check it out. Here’s my review.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo-I read this last year and loved it.  Here’s my review.

Two Days Until Midnight by Lynn Crandall-A quick, contemporary, paranormal romance I read last year.  My review

The Seven Magical Jewels of Ireland by Robert Adams-I had to go back five years for this one.  My review.

Twelve Days of Christmas by Barbara Miller-Again, I went back five years for this sweet, historical romance.  My review

Fifty Eight Faces by Kat Duncan-Going back eight years for this one!  No link to my review on this one or the rest on the list.

For One Dark Knight by Ava James-I went back nine years for this one!

Witch One by Erin Sinclair-Going back ten years for this one!

What do you think?  I know most of these are obscure, but have you read any of them?  If so, what did you think?  If not, do any sound interesting to you?

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Enjoyed that Were Outside My Comfort Zone

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Happy Tuesday!  This week is about books I enjoyed that were outside of my comfort zone.  Some of these books I read a long time ago for a class, some I picked up out of curiosity, and some were recommended to me.  I enjoyed them all, and a couple even became favorites!

The Giver by Lois Lowry-I read this for a class in school when I was 14.  I’d never read anything like it, and I was blown away I felt when I finished it.  I immediately read it again on my own.

3636

Animal Farm by George Orwell-I read this in the same class as The Giver, and I still remember how unsettled I felt as I read it.  I’m glad I read it, but it didn’t become a favorite like The Giver.

1635027

Star Racers by Martin Felando-This is a fun science fiction read.  I generally read more in the fantasy and paranormal genres so this was a step in a different direction.  It was a pretty fun read!

29419988. sy475

The Nexus Mirror by N.E. Michael-I recently read this for review and really enjoyed it.  It is a blend of science fiction and fantasy.  Again, I don’t read a lot of science fiction, but I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next installment in the series.

The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King-My husband recommended this book to me because I enjoy fantasy.  It is the only thing I’ve ever read by Stephen King.  While I don’t feel the need to read any more of his work, I’m glad I read this one.

18127

Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice-I know I’ve mentioned my love of this book before, and it certainly isn’t out of my comfort zone now.  However, when I read it for the first time when I was 16, it was.  I’d never read anything with vampires in it.  I picked it up because I was curious.  I absolutely loved it, and it immediately became a favorite.

43763

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon-This doesn’t seem like it would be out of my comfort zone, but I actually don’t read a lot of contemporary romance.  I tend to gravitate more toward historical or paranormal romance.  This story was highly enjoyable and I really liked From Twinkle with Love too.  I’m thinking I need to take time to read more contemporaries!

28458598

This concludes my list for the week.  I apologize for being a bit short.  I probably could have stretched my list out to ten, but I feel these books were the most memorable for me and best represent what is or used to be out of my comfort zone.  What books have you read out of your comfort zone?  Would any of these make your list?

Caitlyn Daniels never planned to fall in love, least of all with a wanted outlaw. Lord knew she didn’t want a man at all. Life was too exciting to waste it on keeping a home.

However, when Dakota Cabe rode into town, she gave her heart to him without hesitation. The fact that he had a reputation that left most women in need of smelling salts didn’t deter her, she saw the true man beneath the tough façade of a hard-hearted desperado. At least, she thought she did. When he rode back out of her life, she was devastated. She understood his reasons to protect her from bounty hunters. Moreover, she wasn’t naive; she knew what life on the run would entail.

Eighteen months later, John Wake, a vicious outlaw, kidnaps her son and a friend. Her pride was meaningless. She’d make a deal with the devil if it changed things.
Alone, but not without skills of her own and a cultivated courage, she rides out after John Wake and his gang.

In her desperate pursuit to rescue her son, she collides with Dakota, surprisingly on the same mission as she. She needs him. She needs a man as cold, brutal, and cunning as the man who has her son; she needs Dakota Cabe. And she wasn’t too proud to beg if need be, but she didn’t have to.
