Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  This week’s topic is New to Me Authors I read in 2020.  I’ve been in a major reading slump over the past year that I can’t seem to shake.  However, I have been reading books with my children, and many of those authors were new to me!  Let’s get to the list!

Waiting for Memories

My favorite family tradition started as the thing I hated most as a kid. Growing up, I lived thousands of miles away from extended family. I mentioned five kids and seven adults. We were outnumbered. None of us were brave enough to charge down the steps and risk getting in trouble on the happiest day of the year. Instead, we waited. Zoom meetings for Christmas? It could happen this year. As the Corona Virus gets more prevalent, family gatherings are getting smaller. Mine is just about ten people, and they are from my town or no more than 100 miles away. But we all do different things, and all come from different walks of life. Some work from home these days, some are retired, and a few are still in school. There are no little ones in this small family anymore. But should we gather is the question.

I need to send out Christmas cards. I should check the closet to see how many are left from last year. Fewer people send cards these days, but I love getting them and it may be the only way we can communicate soon. No more Christmas parties or fancy dresses. Only the food you cook for you and your loved ones and nothing more. But thankfully you still have loved ones to cook for.

I remember Christmas at my grandmother’s in Arkansas. She had eight kids during the Great Depression, and no one did without. She saw to that. Then each of her kids married and had families of their own, but they still came home at Christmas. The tiny kitchen was full to the brim with food. Each child had a present, normally homemade. We caroled and sat around the Christmas tree – which shone like the stars outside the tiny house – and we loved. I have never felt such love as when I was at my grandmother’s. It was the way Christmas should be and I tried to mimic it with my own children.

At my house we baked cookies while we wrapped presents. Okay, there may have been a little cookie dough on the bows, but it was a well-meant mistake. We watched all the Christmas specials and then on Christmas Eve, we ate snacks by the fire for dinner. There was too much food preparation still to happen in the morning to cook dinner the night before.

But this year whether we meet online or if we’re together, I hope to convey the love I felt at my grandmother’s to my small family now. We can still eat together, even if we see each other by Zoom, and send cards by mail and wish everyone a Merry Christmas. There will still be next year – if we play our cards right.

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  This week we’re talking about characters we’d name pets after.  I absolutely love dogs, especially big dogs.  I grew up with dogs and can’t imagine life without them.  I currently have three dogs, two Great Dane/Saint Bernard mixes and a Pug.  I’ve never named a dog after a character, but I think the idea is intriguing!  So I’ve decided to make a list of names I think would be good for dogs.  I just might end up using some of these in the future!

I just recently re-read The Hobbit and watched the movies, and I’ve always loved the sound of these dwarven names.  I think these would be great for big, strong dogs like a Saint Bernard, Great Dane,  Bernese Mountain Dog, Mastiff, or a Great Pyrenees.

Top Ten Tuesday: Non-Bookish Hobbies

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday!  This week we’re taking a break from books and bookish things to discuss non-bookish hobbies!  I’ve made a list of six things I enjoy other than reading.  Let’s get to the list!

1. Listening to music-I listen to music when I’m cooking, cleaning, running, driving in the car, working on the computer, etc.  (I’m listening to music as I write this post.) Basically, I have some sort of music on most of the time.  I’m also the sort of person who prefers to listen to albums.  I don’t put my music on shuffle or make playlists.  I just really enjoy listening to albums and seeing how each song fits together to make the whole.  I do listen to music on Pandora quite a bit though, but even then, I work to customize my stations so they have a very specific sound/mood to them.

2. Baking/Cooking-Baking and cooking can be pretty different, but I enjoy them both.  I especially like cooking big holiday meals with my mom.  We open a bottle of wine and spend the afternoon talking, laughing, and cooking.  Pies are my favorite thing to bake.

3. Running-There is just something mentally relaxing about getting up in the morning before my husband and kids are awake and going out for a jog around the neighborhood.  Its just me, the road, and of course some good tunes.  I’m not very fast, but I have managed to complete seven half-marathons.

4. Hiking-I am fortunate enough to live near a beautiful state park.  My family frequently spends Saturday mornings exploring the trails with our dogs.

5. Coloring-When I was a very little kid, I wanted to be an artist.  Unfortunately, I don’t have any talent in that area.  However, since I discovered adult coloring books, I’ve enjoyed doing those.

6. Video games-I’m not a gamer by any stretch of the word, and I don’t really have time to play them very often.  Games I’ve enjoyed include Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, and Skyrim.
